Chapter 1 - A Change in Looks
Rolling over in bed, I let out an open-mouth yawn and a waft of my bad morning breath hits me straight in the face. Geez, that was a bad slap to the face, just like an ex-boyfriend dumping you over a mere text. Pursing my lips at the offensive smell, I shut my mouth immediately. Slowly dragging my eyes open, I rub my lids with both thumbs and stare groggily around the large room. The heavy feeling of a small weight resting on my chest has me glancing down with a smile lazily stretching out on my lips. My adorable, German-shepherd lays curled up on my chest while she sleeps. She was an early birthday present from my father who lives in New York. Slowly sitting up straight, I scratch Clover’s little head as she startles awake due to movements and place her on my bed. And she goes back to sleep. Sliding downwards until my butt reached the edge, I place my bare feet on my soft rug and let out a sigh of irritation upon seeing another small pile of gold dust at the foot of my bed. Every morning, ever since I was 6, a gold pile of dust has been kept at the foot of my bed for no reason. Countless times I’ve tried to stay up and catch whoever places the golden dust there, but lost hope when I found no culprit. Somehow, even if I’d stayed up all night, that pile will always appear. All I’ll do is blink and suddenly it’s there. Like magic or something. Getting out of bed I grab a book and fall to my knees, using my hand I gently gather all the dust onto the top of the book and carefully rise to my feet. For whatever reason, my mother believes these golden piles of dust might be some kind of ‘good luck and ever since it started appearing she’d keep the particles of dust inside a closed jar in her office basement. I on the other hand, just think of it as crazy weird. I gently kept the book on my dresser and far away from a window. The last time I hadn’t concentrated on where I’d left it, a strong breeze from the window blew the entire thing away. It was so hard to get the dust off everything. I had to spend that entire day trying to gather it all. Undressing, I slip my en-suite bathroom and took a shower first. Getting out a couple of minutes later, I wrap a soft towel around my body and walk towards my sink to brush my teeth. Cleaning the foggy mirror, I choked on the brush in my mouth while I gape at what I think is my reflection with wide eyes. Because my frigid shoulder-length blonde curls lay wet around my body, all the way down to my waist. How the hell did I not notice the length earlier? But that isn’t the weirdest part. The weirdest, is that my appearance has undergone a magical, and unexplainable surgical transformation. Pulling a wet strand of my hair away from my body, I stare at my new platinum blonde hair. It shines richly with a silky feeling as I twirl the wet strand between my fingers. Even my dull green eyes now gleams a healthy emerald colour with a circle of… gold around my bloody iris! And my skin, let’s just say it’s all clear and smooth like an infant's. Slapping my cheek, I shook my head in disbelief. My eyebrows even share the same platinum colour as my hair and my ears, for some reason I feel like the top curved skin seems to be growing a pointed tip. I mean I could be wrong but, leaning forward on the sink I press my face closer to the mirror before me to be sure, and can’t help but think the top corner of my ears might be reshaping themselves into pointed tips. And lastly, but certainly not the least, my lips… look like both of them were coloured by strawberries. I have to rub them roughly to make sure the colour’s real. In a confused trance, I continue brushing my teeth and then spat out the minty toothpaste in my mouth, gargling with water once I’m done. Walking back into my room I sat in front of my dresser and blow-dried my hair, all through trying my best not to freak out as I come up with possible reasons for the drastic change of my appearance. Layering a coat of rose-scented lotion all over my now smooth skin, I can’t help but appreciate the changes before picking out a matching pair of underwear to slip into. I got prepared quickly in a white dress that stops just shy of my mid-thighs. The dress had been a spontaneous shopping gift from my mother and I used to think I could never look good wearing it so it was kept at the back of my closet, but with my sudden change I’m feeling a little confident and I think I’m due for a little change. The dress felt a little too snug when it’s usually big for my flat chest and barely there ass, but I decided to not concentrate on my bodily changes as well and simply accept my absurd rise into the late blossom of puberty. There was no way I’m going to wear heels so I opted for a pair of yellow sandals and a matching shoulder bag. Done dressing, I walk back to my dresser and took a comb to my hair. Geez, it looks so much richer than it did in the bathroom now that it's dry. Not to sound like a narcissist, but I’m completely stunned by how effortlessly gorgeous I look while I comb my hair and watch the strands naturally curl up into waves around my body. No one is going to believe “dull Eva" can look this good when I get to school, and knowing my best friend, she’ll freak and make a complete scene. Pulling my hair into a high bun, I brush the loose curls that refused to stay up away from my face and put on a coat of lip-gloss, but it only made my lips look a little too red. Which makes it seem like I’m trying too hard. With a shake of my head, I cleaned it off and clasped the cap back on the lip gloss. Standing, I pack up everything needed for school into my bag. Lifting the book with the pile of gold dust, I gently carried it downstairs where I can hear my mother moving around in the kitchen. “Mum, there’s been another delivery!” I yell, her chuckling response making me smile as I turn down the hallway to see her moving around behind the counter. My mother and I always made this joke about how we’re getting an unordered delivery of gold dust that’s probably due for a lifetime with no return receipts, and we always found it to be funny. Walking towards the open kitchen, I place the book gently on the counter and looked up when I heard a surprised gasp slip from her lips. Meeting her startled gaze, a weary smile settles on my lips while I watch the play of emotions on her face until it finally settled on astonishment. Even though I grew up knowing I was not my parent's real daughter, I guess I didn't expect a complete upgrade to make that point very clear. I mean I look nothing like my parents or the rest of my family. While my mother is 5’9ft with dark brown hair and baby blue eyes, she also has a tanned skin with a straight nose. My father on the other hand is 6ft with dark skin. I on the other hand, I’m 5’5fit, and now a platinum blonde with pale skin. “I know right, I woke this morning and I suddenly turned from dull and ugly to vibrant and gorgeous. It’s crazy!” Mum’s shocking expression modified to a glare. “Eva Maria Montgomery, how many times have I told you to stop calling yourself ugly!” “Sorry,” I shrug, raising both hands in the air. “But it's true, or at least it was.” The sound of my mother’s exasperated sigh makes me glance back up, she turns to the drawers behind her back and pulls out a glass jar from its many stacks. I watched while she fills the jar gently until it's up to the rim. After a minute or two she regards me with a look and I know she’s about to go into one of her rants about how “beauty is on the inside rather than the outside", and decided to change the subject. “You know, even my boobs have grown from an A-cup to like, a full B-cup or something. My waist feels narrower, and my hips are slightly wider. The only thing that didn’t change is my height.” And like I’d expected, her attention was immediately diverted as her narrowed gaze slowly start to take in the changes on the other parts of my body. “Looks like it's time.” She mumbles, her words confusing as a sad emotion soon settled on her face. “What do you mean?” Shaking her head, she glances down to the jar and settles the lid on top, shutting the jar tight. “Nothing honey, it’s nothing.” She says, turning her back to me. She picked up a plate full of pancakes and a glass of orange juice then turned back to me, sliding them over she said. “Eat, while I go put this jar in the basement. When you’re done let me know so I can drive you to school.” I nodded slowly as I studied her carefully, picking my fork to dig into the great smelling pancakes right beneath my nose. “I also have an errand to run today so I might be back early by the time you back from school, but Eva-” She paused, making me look up from my plate as I stuffed an entire pancake into my mouth. She smiled fondly as she stared at me with an endearing expression, before using a napkin to wipe away the golden syrup dripping down the corner of my lips. “-there’s something I have to talk to you about later today.” Nodding, I turn my attention back to my food when she made her way out of the kitchen.
