Chapter 16 - A Piece of my Mother

1077 Words
Once it was late, I bade Zack goodbye and my mother chose that moment to slip out from her isolation centre in the basement. I left her in there this morning and it doesn’t seem like she stepped out of her office all day. Her hair is a mess, she still wore the baggy sweatshirt and shorts she wore in the morning, and the stink permeating from her body let me know she probably hasn’t been in the shower either. Telling her to head upstairs I took care of dinner and was relieved she didn’t step out of her office while Zack was here. When Friday appeared, like usual I talked to my father on Skype and shared a birthday cake with my mother. At school, everyone wished me a happy birthday in the halls or class with a kiss on the cheek, a hug, or a rose for some weird reason. Once we got back to my place Katie let me have two hours of rest before forcing me to get ready, and here we are now standing in front of my mother’s full-length mirror while checking out our bathing suit. Dressed in a blue Ralph cutout swimsuit which showed off her legs and curves, Katie looked extremely hot even though her hair was piled up in a messy bun. I, on the other hand, couldn’t be more shocked by how good I looked with my hair styled into a side braid. I have on a light coat of make-up while dressed in a white Broadway lace-up scalloped halter neckline swimsuit. Picking up the simple crocheted cotton and silk-blend mini dress from my mother’s bed, I wore it over my bikini just as Katie wore her embroidered voile robe. Tying the belt loosely around her waist. Slipping on our sandals we walked downstairs and head out of the house with sunglasses on our heads to see my mother waiting for us in the car with a grin, she’s dressed in a pink two-piece bikini and a multi-coloured kaftan tied securely at the waist with a belt. Once we got to the party I smiled, amazed by everything Katie and my mother had planned to celebrate my big sixteenth. Squealing, I turned around in excitement and jumped on both of them with tight hugs of glee. Hand in hand we trudged through the crowd with people wishing me happy birthday left and right and I couldn’t help but constantly respond with a bright smile. A huge stage was set up at the far side of the beach and a local band played for the crowd, Katie was by my side throughout the entire party and I nearly passed out at the number of presents loaded into a truck at the end night. Despite my previous reluctance, the party had been fun, and of course we swam a lot, eat junk food, and played a variety of games at the stalls surrounding the beach while dancing like crazy drunks. Somehow, without my knowledge, Katie was able to get the keys and alarm combinations from Principle Cameron himself. According to her, after a couple of beers, the man had a loose mouth. I only spotted Zack once, but he stood next to Melody and their friends near the stage and I tried my hardest not to look out for him again. The next day, no one in my house got up until well past noon. We still had a couple of hours to go before the Halloween party at school, so Katie and I lazed about after a hot bath until it was time to get dressed. Due to my inability to find myself a suitable costume to wear to the party, I made the spontaneous decision to amend the dress my birth mother had worn the day she died. I was surprised when my mother revealed to me that the dress kept in the chest, had been the same dress my biological mother had worn when they met, and how she kept it because she felt like the dress was part of my true history. After thorough washing and some amendments, the dress was given a complete make-over. It hangs from one of my closet doors, neatly pressed. And while Katie helped me with my make-up a couple of hours later, I couldn’t help the tingle of excitement I felt at the thought of stepping out in a dress previously worn by my birth mother. Like a cliché, I chose to dress up as a fairy while Katie decided on a Witch costume. She made my make-up light with glittering eyeshadows and gold fake eyelashes, while her make-up was made to look smoky and edgier than usual. She got dressed in a black, sleeveless dress that stops just shy of her mid-thighs, hanging off her bare neck is a red cape to match her witch’s hat. She helped me slip into the beautiful light green dress and I stood in front of my new dresser, a birthday present from my mother, to admire it while Katie zipped me up from behind. The dress is floor-length and body-hugging, which does wonders for my new curves. There’s a little slit to the side and the slit runs up my mid-thigh to show off my left leg. The dress has an off-shoulder sleeve with a strap made of gold chains wrapped around my torso, its V-neck is a little plunging and it showed off a bit more of my breasts than I’m uncomfortable with. The waistline is narrow, but it has a flowing skirt with a small train behind it. The dress also has a plunging back to make things spicier and the material glitters like diamonds with every movement in the light. To accessorize, I bought these really pretty gold headpieces that seemed like a crown wrapped around my forehead with a glittering diamond in the middle. Thanks to the fact that the top corners of my ears get pointier each day, I didn’t need to get fake inserts and instead aligned both ears with tiny stud earrings. Black ribbons decorated with gold threads was tied around the front ends of my curtain bangs and I couldn’t help but admire how the wavy curls Katie helped me style frame my face softly.
