Morning classes went by like a breeze, and by lunch, everyone was talking about my “new look".
Katie and I sat at our usual lunch table, laughing as Lily Web, one of Katie’s close friends was telling a joke. Ever since Katie and I became best friends after she moved here with her family three years ago, she makes me sit with her group of friends at lunch so I wouldn’t sit by myself anymore.
I’ve grown up with more than half of the students in this school, but I’ve never been on the popular side, and while everyone blossomed in one way or the other it always seemed like I was stuck in a certain age.
Puberty was a late b***h, and I was made fun of because of it. And of course, the school's Queen B, Melody Knight, was the one who led my group of bullies. She’s always had it out for me, and I have no idea why?
Think of the she-devil, and she shall appear. I thought, a feeling of dread settling low into my stomach when I spotted the exact person I was just thinking about with her entourage of followers heading towards our table.
Her entourage mostly consists of her boyfriend Zack Dane, the Captain of the Basketball team, his twin Jack, one of El Molino’s hottest guys Alex Russo, and Melody’s best friend Kimmy Wild. They make up the clique of the school’s most popular douches.
“Well, look what we have here, dull Eva is trying to finally fit in.” Melody mocks, grabbing the cafeteria’s attention.
I glanced up and was startled by the sneer of jealousy on her face. “W-w-what do you want Melody?”
“N-no-nothing,” She mimics my nervous stutter, a smirk on her lips. “Sweetie, can you be any clearer?” She asks sarcastically, making her friends and everyone but our table laugh.
I looked down in embarrassment and Katie stood to her feet, levelling a cold look at Melody she rests both hands on her waists. “Look here you troll, don’t you have something better to do with your life?”
“I don’t believe I was talking to you-”
“And what’s with the make-up and hair?” Katie cuts her off. “Daddy couldn’t give you enough money to fix all of that?” She asks, referring to Melody’s face as she circles a hand in the air.
“You-”
“Oh my gosh is that a nose hair?” Her dramatic gasp caused several people to snicker in amusement as Melody covered her nose in embarrassment and horror.
“What, no!” She protests, dropping her hands she glared at Katie in hatred and huffed. “For someone who thinks I need a fix-up, you should honestly take a look in the mirror every once in a while. Where exactly did you shop for clothes, a department store for the crazy?”
“Hey!” I snapped, rising to my feet in anger. “Enough of the drama Melody, I mean can you get real for one second. Do you even know how pathetic you look when you try to bully me for your enjoyment?” I ask, my question catching everyone off guard as many eyes fixate on me in surprise.
I’m so done being bullied by everyone, I mean I’m 15 for goodness sake and this kind of crap needs to stop. I can no longer tolerate seeming weak, and the feeling only gets worse whenever my silence forces Katie to have to stand up for me.
As a mature teenager, it’s time I stop whining and start to ensure I get the respect I deserve from my peers.
Letting out a sigh, I say.
“Melody, I don’t know or care about what kind of grudge you have against me, but I’m done letting you treat me like crap. You need to leave me alone and take your “cry for attention” elsewhere.”
Scoffing, Melody crossed her arms over her chest and regarded me with an amused smirk. She lets her eyes drag over my body slowly in disgust, her piercing stare sending waves of trepidation down my spine as I try my best not to be intimidated.
“Eva, you’re just a pest who's trying to fit in where she doesn’t belong. This is high school, not some teen movie come to life, drop the courageous act while you still can or else I will make your life a living hell for thinking you could challenge me.”
“I’m not the one acting here Melody, and are you sure this isn’t a teen movie?” I scoff, gathering my courage. “I mean you play the b***h part so well.”
I felt bloody good when my words made her speechless, the entire cafeteria filled with the hoots of students as several expressed their enjoyment of the drama before them by chuckling.
Katie couldn’t hold back her smirk even if she tried, and honestly neither could I. But I did, because I knew smirking right now would only make things worse for me.
Melody’s fists clenched tightly as she drops her hands to her sides and glared at me in anger, she grits her teeth and takes a step forward when she says in a threatening voice. “You better watch your back Eva Montgomery.”
She turned to walk off before I could respond but Katie stopped her with a call. “Oh, Melody!”
Halting in her steps, she threw a glare over her shoulder. “What?” She snapped.
“You might want to make a pit stop at the bathroom first, it seems you’re having a little sweat problem.” Katie tapped her armpit with a mocking smile and Melody screamed in rage.
I place a hand against my lips to hold back a chuckle as I stare at the underarm of her tight crop top, where a little wet stain is pretty evident to anyone. She stomped off without a reply with her friends following closely behind and an uproar of laughter rose in the air.
Blowing out a breath I didn’t know I held in, I felt my slight boost of courage leave my body as I helplessly drop down in my seat and stared up at Katie who squealed in excitement as she settled down beside me. “Girl, that was awesome.”
“Not really,” I moaned, dropping my head in my hands. “I’m so dead. Melody is going to kill me for her embarrassment today.”
“Oh you’re right about that,” She chuckled, and I raised my head to shoot her a glare. “But have no fear for your bestie is here, she won’t be coming within a mile near you.”
Unable to be comforted or reassured by her words, I place my head back in my arms and groan. I spent the rest of my day keeping to myself, hoping I don’t somehow encounter Melody in the halls.
Fortunately for me, she doesn’t share any of my classes so I was safe… for today. But, last period in biology was more than a surprise when I got stuck with Zack as my lab partner, we were supposed to work on dissecting a frog when he spoke to me for the first time in years.
“I’m sorry about Melody, and I'm sorry about the things she said.”
“You didn’t look so sorry when you were laughing,” I replied dryly, and he had the grace to at least look embarrassed.
“Yeah,” He sighs. “I’m also sorry about that.”
“Whatever, I didn’t put it to mind. It’s what I’m used to.” I shrug.
We fell into silence and I thought that would be the end of it, but instead, he speaks up again. “You don’t have to worry about Melody bothering you anymore, Katie made sure of that.”
I raised a quizzical eyebrow at that but he shrugged, not saying anything further. Studying him, I glanced from his reddish-blonde hair to his pale white skin and blue eyes the colour of the sea.
My eyes betray my unwillingness to turn away from him and instead rest on his broad shoulders and his large pecks. Zack, who isn’t so bad looking cannot be compared to the looks of his brother Jack, or his best friend Alex. But, a lot of the female population of El Molino High still deem him to be one of the most gorgeous boys in school.
And unlike his twin, who has black hair instead of reddish blonde, and green eyes, they still look so much alike. Shaking off my wandering thoughts, I turned my focus back to our work.
