Chapter 2 - What Are Best Friends For?

1113 Words
By the time my mother returned I’d finished my food, drank down my juice, and let Clover out through the back door so she could pee and do her little business before filling up her doggy bowl with food and water. And in just half an hour, the two of us made our way out of our home on a little hill after making sure all the doors are locked. Leaving in Forestville, Sonoma county, I couldn’t be happier to be in a town filled with warm beaches, local farmers markets, wineries, inns, bakeries, cafes and restaurants. Sure, it’s small, but it’s still the place I grew up in. It’s the place I love more than anything and it’s home. We got into my mother’s new Chevy which she bought when her new novel turned into a best-seller. My mother writes fantasy, romance, and paranormal contemporary novels under a pen name and her books are huge successes which is why we can afford the expensive 2 story cabin house we live in. We drove down the hill for school and I simply stared out the window to gaze at the passing houses and trees in silence. El Molino High, in my definition, is a teenager's hell. But of course, what high school isn’t? Pulling over by the side-walk, I got out after she placed a sloppy kiss on my cheek. Circling the car I waved goodbye before turning to face the crowd of students in the parking lot with a strained smile. Taking in a deep breath, I followed the noisy crowd and walked towards the dreadful building with my head down. I tried and failed to not notice the attention I was receiving and when I walked into the school building, everyone pretty blatantly stared at me. Moving through the crowd I rushed to my locker, pulling out my notes for class with shaky hands. When a familiar exclamation filled the hallway, I shut my eyes, groaning underneath my breathe as my face colours in embarrassment before the real fun can even begin. Swallowing, I turn to glare at what everyone is staring at ...or should I say who everyone is staring at. My eccentric best friend, Katie Song, stared at me in shock as a huge grin slowly lights up her entire face. Katie is a girl blessed with warm ivory skin and light red eyes, but despite the oddness of her eyes they always drew attention due to their peculiar beauty. Katie has full jet black hair which frames her heart-shaped face. Her small, button nose has always been considered cute and her full lips are the colour of blood. She has this small dot below her lower lip which has always bothered her, but in my opinion, only adds to how exotically beautiful she is. Sometimes, she makes me wonder if she’s some ethereal being descended from the heavens to mix with us mere mortals for the fun of it. At 5’10ft, Katie is taller than most girls in school which is something she loves to brag about. And, like always she dressed in an eccentric style that always works for her. Today, she’s in black knee-length boots, and a white high-waisted pleated skirt with a split that goes past her knees and practically shows off her entire leg as she works. Paired up with her skirt is a cropped, off-shoulder multi-coloured blouse that accentuated her heavy breasts. A lot of girls have tried to copy her exact style in the past, even our school’s legendary Queen-B Melody Knight. But everyone always ended up looking like clowns, which goes to show not everyone can rock crazy as Katie does. She braided her hair in two pigtails, and twisted the braids into buns. On her neck is a black choker necklace, and her make-up is a little heavier than usual. Katie rushed forward and pulled me into a tight hug. Her unexpected action making me grunt from the force of it. Though Katie is pretty popular and has a trail of guys on her tail, she’s never bullied or strayed away from me because no one wanted to hang out with the “dull and ugly looking Eva.” “Eva Montgomery!” She pulls back and yells in my face, making me wince. “Why didn’t you call me when you got a make-over?” I glanced around nervously at the whispering crowd and could see recognition upon their faces, immediately phones were pulled out and pictures were taken but Katie ignored them all, focusing only on me. “I d-didn’t have a make-over, I just woke up looking like this in the morning.” I said in a harsh whisper, mentally communicating with my best friend to let this go. But of course, this is Katie, and I should have known better. Her brows raised and a sly smile slowly played on her lips. Everyone leaned in, straining to hear what we're talking about as fingers moved quickly on their screens. “So, you’re telling me you woke up looking hot as Aphrodite without any effort on your part?” She asked, and I nodded my head when she pinched my arm for a response. “Yes.” “Well, I always knew that soon enough you’d turn into the gorgeous belle you truly are. And, it seems slow growth sprout agrees with me. You just got to love puberty right?” She asked, her question rhetoric as she shut my locker close with one hand and linked the other with mine, leaving the gossiping crowd behind as she dragged me forward. When we got out of earshot I glared up at her as she threw her head back in laughter. “I can’t believe you just did that, that was so embarrassing!” Blinking, she stared me down, a smirk on her lips. “Why ever not Eva?” She asks. “It’s not like I said anything untrue. I’ve always known behind that shy geeky look there’s a beautiful flower just waiting to come into bloom, and trust me, it looks bloody fantastic!” Bowing my head shyly I feel grateful and comforted by her words, a shy smile slipping onto my lips as I let her lead us to Math class. “Thanks Katie, that means a lot.” “Sweetie, come on,” Katie smiled. “What are best friends for?”
