Chapter 7 – Never be the same again

1081 Words
Alyssa I stood up quickly, my chair scraping the floor as I called after Pamela. “Wait!” I shouted, but she had already disappeared out of the café door. Before I could rush after her, I felt a strong hand grip my arm, stopping me in my tracks. I turned, meeting Tom’s determined gaze. My heart lurched, but not from longing or regret—it was pure anger. “Let go of me, Tom!” I snapped, jerking my arm away from his grasp. “We have nothing to talk about. I already told you, I’m done. You and Elvie deserve each other—cheaters, both of you!” His face darkened as he let out a heavy sigh, and for a second, I thought he might apologize. But instead, his next words cut deeper than I expected. “Why? Is this because you’re trying to impress our new professor now? Flirting with him to make me jealous?” I stared at him in shock, my blood boiling. Before I could respond, he smirked, leaning closer. “If you think using Professor Thomson to make me jealous is going to work, it won’t. But don’t stoop so low as to seduce another man, let alone a professor, just to get back at me. Have some respect for yourself, Alyssa.” The slap came before I even thought about it, my palm stinging as it collided with his face. The sound echoed in the café, and several customers turned to look. I didn’t care. My entire body shook with fury as I glared at him. “If you really believe I’d use another man like that, you don’t know me at all,” I hissed, my voice trembling with anger. “I’m not the one who lost here, Tom. You are. I don’t regret losing you because you’re nothing but a cheater, a shameless traitor. Don’t worry, I’ll never go back to you. You’re free now. I won’t waste another second on a man like you!” Without waiting for a response, I turned on my heel and stormed out of the café, my vision blurred by unshed tears. I glanced around, hoping to spot Pamela, but she was nowhere to be seen. It looked like she had already gone home. I let out a frustrated sigh, wiping my face quickly. The café door swung open behind me, and I heard Tom’s voice calling my name. I didn’t turn back. I walked faster, desperate to get away from him. Just as I reached the curb, a sleek, black car pulled up in front of me. The window rolled down, and my breath caught in my throat. It was Professor Thomson. “Get in,” he said, his voice low and commanding. I swallowed hard, my mind racing. The last thing I wanted was for Tom to see me getting into Professor Thomson’s car. He would never stop accusing me of trying to make him jealous. Without thinking it through, I opened the door and slid into the passenger seat. The car sped off almost immediately, and when I glanced into the side mirror, I saw Tom running after us, only to stop as the car pulled further away. I turned to Professor Thomson, who was focused on the road ahead, his face unreadable. My heart raced again, though this time, it wasn’t from anger. There was something about being alone with him that made me nervous. He glanced at me briefly before returning his attention to the road. “So, did you get closure from your former mate?” I stared out of the window, unsure how to answer. My chest tightened at the thought of Tom, but the truth was, since I saw him with Elvie, I had already cut all emotional ties. “There’s nothing left between us,” I said quietly. “Seeing him with Elvie was enough. I’m done.” Professor Thomson nodded, but his next words made my stomach flip. “Good. You should never speak to him again. I’ve already told you—we’re fated mates.” I froze, my eyes widening as I stared at him. “What?” The word barely escaped my lips. He didn’t look at me, but his voice held a seriousness that sent chills down my spine. “You heard me. We’re fated mates. I’ve known since the moment I saw you.” My head spun, and I struggled to find my voice. “Please, don’t play games with me,” I managed, my voice shaking. “I don’t have the energy for that right now.” To my surprise, he suddenly pulled the car to the side of the road and stopped. He turned to face me, his eyes intense. “Alyssa, do you seriously not remember what happened last night?” I shook my head, confused and a little scared. “No... I don’t. I don’t remember anything.” He let out a long, frustrated sigh, running a hand through his hair. “We both transformed. Our wolves... they felt the fated call. And after that, we have Se—” “Stop!” I covered his mouth with my hand, my whole body trembling. “No. Don’t say it.” Tears blurred my vision, and I shook my head again, desperate to block out his words. But even as I tried to deny it, some part of me knew he wasn’t lying. Something had changed last night, something I had been trying to ignore. Professor Thomson gently pulled my hand away from his mouth, his expression softer now. “You can’t run from this, Alyssa. We’re bound to each other. It’s not something we can control.” I looked away, my thoughts a jumbled mess. How could this be happening? How could I have gone from being betrayed by Tom to being bound to someone like Professor Thomson in such a short time? It didn’t feel real—it couldn’t be. “I don’t know if I’m ready for this,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. He didn’t push me, didn’t demand anything. He just nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. “I understand. But whether you’re ready or not, this bond is real. You’ll feel it too, in time.” I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. Everything had changed so fast, and I didn’t know if I could keep up. All I knew was that nothing would ever be the same again.
