**Romick (POV) **
[Kaarmanet, Academy]
"Is that you, Romick?" Kyrah's voice called out from beneath the shadow of our colossal form.
"You're welcome," I replied, my tone devoid of any emotion, after I had shifted back to my human form.
My clothes were torn to shreds from the intense battle, leaving me exposed, but I hardly cared as I stood before Kyrah. Despite the awkwardness of my nudity, I hastily searched for something to cover myself with before making my way back to my dorm.
"As if I asked for your help!" Kyrah's voice dripped with disdain as she turned and walked away from me.
That brat! How could she be so arrogant? I had just risked my life to save hers, and yet she had the audacity to act as if she didn't need my help. Why did I even bother intervening? I should just have left her to fend for herself! That blind bi...
"Don't you dare use that word for our Mate, Rom!" Arsa's growl reverberated in my mind, a reminder of our connection to Kyrah.
"She won't be our mate for long!" I spat out through clenched teeth, frustration pulsing through me.
"Kyrah!" A familiar voice called out nearby.
My heart skipped a beat as panic gripped me. But as I turned, relief washed over me at the sight of Professor Dasha rushing toward the training grounds, concern etched on his face.
"Kyrah, are you okay? Are you hurt?" His voice was gentle as he turned my blind mate around, inspecting her for any injuries.
I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as I watched the professor's tender care for her. Their bond was undeniable, and I couldn't help but wonder about the relationship Kyrah shared with her father. It seemed lightyears better than the nonexistent connection between my own father and me.
"Woodwind!?" Professor Dasha's voice broke through my thoughts, and I realized he had been trying to get my attention for some time. I felt a flush of embarrassment as I took the shorts he offered, hastily pulling them on to cover my exposed state.
"Well, I should probably be asking what you were doing out of bed at this hour," he sighed, "but I'm grateful you were here. Thank you for saving her."
"I just did what anyone would have done, Professor," I replied, hoping to deflect any suspicion about my connection to Kyrah.
"Anyone else would have run towards the castle screaming their lungs out," he stated bluntly.
"Umm..." I struggled to find an appropriate response.
"Like I said, I'm grateful. Also, I don't think you knew about this special ability of yours?" His expression softened with gratitude.
"You saw?" I asked incredulously, taken aback by his knowledge.
"It's hard to miss a 30-foot wolf on the academy grounds, don't you think?" he quirked a brow, his tone laced with amusement. "But your secret is safe, for now, as the students and most of the faculty are ignorantly snoring at this moment."
"I'm glad... because I honestly have no idea how that happened," I admitted with a sigh of relief.
"Hmm... then we better keep this hushed for now," he replied, his tone serious. "But I want to see you at 4 in the morning every day starting tomorrow."
"What?!"
"You need training," he stated matter-of-factly, before turning his attention to Kyrah. "And you, sweetpea, walk with me."
"Sweetpea?!" I repeated, trying to suppress a laugh at the unexpected nickname.
"Is it any of your business?" Kyrah retorted, her arms crossed defiantly as she faced the castle.
Can you believe this entitled Princess Blind? Arrogant AF!
"Hey!" Professor Dasha chided gently, causing her to huff in response like the brat she was. "She was actually very small when she was born, so her uncle calls her Peanut Pie. But I'm not as big a fan of pies as he is!" he added with a wink, catching me off guard once again.
Who knew this stern professor from class was actually fun to be around? As they began walking back to the academy castle, I couldn't help but glance back at the lifeless beast lying on the ground. Why had it attacked Kyrah, a blind girl with no known special abilities? The mystery lingered in the air, leaving me with more questions than answers.
"Oh, and by the way!" Professor Dasha's voice suddenly sounded behind me, causing me to jump in surprise. "Happy Birthday, Woodwind!" His gentle smile caught me off guard before he turned and left, leaving me to wonder...
"How did he know?" I muttered, perplexed by the unexpected birthday wish.
"Probably from our reports!" Arsa chimed in with a hint of sarcasm.
"Hmm... anyway, what do you think that beast wanted from Kyrah?" I pondered aloud, my mind still reeling from the encounter.
"Are you worried about our mate?" Arsa teased, the playful tone evident in his voice.
"No, Arsa, I'm merely curious!" I defended, though a part of me couldn't deny the concern I felt for Kyrah's safety.
"Actually, I'd say you should be more curious about how, in the chaos, we expanded our form to a 30-foot giant of a wolf, Rom!" Arsa quipped, reminding me of the extraordinary event that had just transpired.
"Let's just go to bed!" I sighed, feeling overwhelmed by the events of the night.
With a resigned huff, I trudged back to the castle and my dorm room, the weight of the night's events heavy on my mind. Sleep seemed like a distant dream as my thoughts raced with unanswered questions. It felt like the world had been turned upside down in just a matter of hours, leaving me with more confusion than clarity.
And though I would never admit it, even to myself, worry gnawed at my insides when I thought about Kyrah.
An attack within the academy was unheard of. This place was supposed to be one of the safest in Kaarmanet, even during the war two decades ago, not a soul was hurt here... Yet, a rampant mystical creature had targeted the daughter of the Queen of Mystical Creatures, no less! Who would dare to attack royalty within these walls?
Could it be someone within the academy who orchestrated the attack? The thought sent shivers down my spine. But Kyrah didn't have enemies who would want to harm her... or did she? The mystery deepened, and I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this incident than met the eye.
