Prologue
**Vann (POV) ** [Kaarmanet, Warfaind Palace] Cahaya stayed tucked in my arms as they trembled to open the old dusty envelope, sealed with an elegant lavender crest on similarly colored wax. The front of the envelope had beautifully curved handwriting that screamed elegance with my name etched on it. ‘To, my sweet Vann’ and ‘From, your beloved mother’ sprawled neatly in the center. I opened the envelope and a folded parchment slid out and landed in my lap with a cluck of something heavy. I raised the parchment and unfolded it to find white gold chains that stuck together with a pendent that broke in half. The pendant itself looked beautiful, an intricate design of an infinite love loop- a heart nestled in the three-pointed loops. The outline glimmers in gold etchings but tiny diamonds are arranged beautifully within the design, giving it a distinct stary glimmer. I handed it to Cahaya and opened the parchment to read, what were the first and last words from my mother to me. My dearest sweet Vann, Oh, how I wish to hold you in my arms, see you grow, and tell you all of this myself but you are yet six months away and I fear the gods have other plans. Plans that include me being taken away before you know it. But please understand my son, what I’m going to tell you now should remain to you and not another soul should know. Not even your father, my child, for he doesn’t know what I am telling you now. Cahaya shifted in my arms trying to leave but I tightened my hold, “You are not another soul, love, but a part of me.” With that, she slumped back reluctantly into my arms as I continued to read… It must strike you odd, that your mother has something that your father, the love of my life doesn’t know. But what can I say, some things are best left unsaid for they only gnawn at your fear! However, my sweet, you must know of my gift… a gift no one knows about but my grandmother herself, for she was the one who passed it on to me. This gift that I speak of, my child, won’t be bestowed upon you, but your child instead, a girl to be precise. I would give anything in the worlds around, me to be able to do so myself, but I’m not going to be around much longer, my son. This is why I need you to be the one that understands it, so you can help my granddaughter when the time comes. It is a gift, truly, but at this moment, it only feels like a curse. The gift that I speak of, my boy, is the gift of sight! The sight is a rare gift that runs in my side of the family for generations unknown. But it always skips a generation, hence the gift of sight will now be bestowed to your first girl child. The sight, my dear, is a special gift that gives you the ability to see the future and to see what others don’t or much rather can’t. The energy that you might see in colors when you close your eyes and focus, is the tell tails sign that it runs in your veins. But your daughter will have a much more precise power of sight when the time comes. I’ve prepared a volume of instructions, precautions, and guidance to help my granddaughter. It also contains exercises that you must make her perform, relentlessly, since she is two years old. That will make sure she is well prepared for when the power blooms. Be careful, my child, for the gift of sight is wanted by many who’d misuse it and go to any lengths to obtain it. Teach her to protect herself, unlike me, let her wield weapons unknown to the female warriors as well, and make her strong emotionally, mentally, and physically; for the perils of the one with sight are unimaginable. I know you would feel like your mother keeps rambling about a granddaughter that isn’t even here yet, but I’ve even somber news for you, my sweet child. I’ve seen your future and what I saw broke my heart, which is why I’m painfully aware, I won’t make it, even until you could be fed once before you lose me. But what gods will, shall happen! Your life as I saw, isn’t as beautiful as I would have wanted to believe. You will face tough choices to make, and learn to hide your pain behind that brilliant smile of yours that will have many a girl swooning for you, my boy. But I’m not fooled by your smile, for I am your mother. I have seen the pain, the loneliness, and the fear that grips you. The fear far greater than you would show or care to admit, the fear of losing someone you love, the fear of not being loved back. They will plague you! That being said, I also saw you being loved, like no other, with nothing to give and nothing to ask, this girl will love you with all she has. I do know not, whether to be happy or clutch my heart with sorrow. This girl, your soul-bound mate, is both your salvation and your destruction, but I don’t know which will come first. I have but one thing to ask of you though, do not give up on love, my child, even if it hurts… love her with all you have just as she will. The necklaces of the infinite love loop are enchanted for you and your soul-bound mate… they’ll clasp only if she truly loves you and won’t come off until both of you pass onn. Though I have an inclination of who she might be, I’m not certain and hence won’t mention it. But I will as a parting gift tell you this, both of you together will accomplish what others would think impossible. You will meet friends that will love you like their own… they will be your true family, my son. Believe in them and trust your heart… I’d be long gone by the time you would read this, but give my love to your lovely bride just the same. I bid you farewell my child and please don’t go looking for me in the spirit realm, it is useless… but yes, my granddaughter will find me when it is time, then you will see me as well. Until then, my dear boy, I’ll be at peace with you in my prayer and blessings all the same. Your loving mother, Kyrah… I looked at the words of my mother, words she wrote before I was born and yet she knew what was to come years later. Truly, she had the gift of sight and so will my daughter in the future
