20. In search of the werewolves

1416 Words
ANNA “Mum, how are we going to find the werewolves? What if we meet vampires or demons?” I asked Mum, who was sitting uprightly on a side stool. “You won't meet vampires or demons.” “How can you know that?” She smiled at me and patted me back as she stood. “Because, just like us, the werewolves are terrified of vampires and demons. They definitely will be far away from danger.” Well, Castol Oak was a very big island, it was definitely going to be difficult finding the werewolves. It was the day after we had gotten a weapon that could actually kill vampires. Mum insisted that we began to search for the werewolves immediately as time was of the essence. I couldn't agree more. The dagger we had could kill vampires but only one by one. We still needed support. The werewolves were often called the weakest amongst the Supernaturals, I can't say how true that is. However, physically, they had the edge over us, hence our need to work with them. Nolan, Nika, Tasha and I set out on our journey that seemed quite hopeless. We literally walked in any direction our guts directed us. We had an important mission, one that included us convincing another kind to work with us—no way this was going to be easy. Funny enough, I felt finding where the werewolves stayed might be the toughest part, being that all we had was a picture. “Aren't they wolves? Where do wolves live?” Tasha inquired. She turned to Nika. “You are the nerd here, where do wolves live?” “Wolf dens,” Nika said. Tasha rolled her eyes at Nika. “You are supposed to be the genius here, I meant where as in what kind of a place or weather or whatever.” “Oh, a variety of places. From tundra to desert, from great plains to temperate rain forest. Wolves have adapted to a wide variety of climates and habitats.” Making a funny face, Tasha said, “Thanks for all this useful information that doesn't help me at all.” We all laughed at that. Though the apocalypse has brought a lot of sadness to the world, I still found that sharing my life with my loved ones has been the only fun part of my life in general. Spending time with them made me forget all the bad things and remember that we were incredibly lucky to be in Crystal Oak. The saddest part right now was that we used to be twelve. Now with only four of us remaining brings the big scary questions. Was this just it? Was this how little life meant? When will our ends come? Today? Tomorrow? The day after? The week after? Thinking about it all brought nothing but fear to my heart. I was certain the rest felt the exact way. “Why don't I buy the ideology that werewolves are nice? Your Mum makes it all sound like they are nice people who turn into bunnies,” Tasha said. “Same here. I'm also finding it hard to believe that werewolves are going to be any nicer than the vamps,” Nolan supported. “Wolves aren't popular because of their niceness, so why should we expect anything more from werewolves?” “I don't know. Nika, what do you think?" I asked. Nika took some time before she said anything. “Anna's Mum is very cautious and collected, if she says the werewolves can be trusted, then they can be. She seemed to have known that alpha she spoke of, besides, the fear of the vamps and demons is more than enough to make us unite.” Nika was the most level headed in our circle even when we were more in numbers. Just then, we heard screaming. It was the voice of a man. We ran in the direction of the voice and after a little while, we saw the ‘screamer'. It was a very young man, probably in his mid-twenties. Holding onto his jean trousers was a little girl, not more than seven years old. The girl was crying, and who could blame her? She and the guy were surrounded by over fifty zombies. Neither of them held a weapon. After successfully setting all the zombies ablaze, we got the time to talk to the man. He was about six feet tall and had very curly hair which was expertly trimmed. Now, this is weird because not many people had the time to style their hair anymore. “Thank you so much," he said as he sat on the ground. “What are you?” Nolan asked, carefully staring at the guy and the little girl. “What am I? I don't understand.” In her regular soft voice, Nika explained, “What he means is, are you human?” “What else would I be?” Tasha rolled her eyes at him. “Trust me, I can think of a number of things.” This was a little unusual. It was common to see humans, most of them were either dead or had risen to become zombies. There was one peculiar thing about Hamzak 101. It didn't only kill humans and turned them into zombies but it managed to have gotten into EVERY human. Every human being had the virus, no one was exempted. However, for a very small percentage ( < 0.1%) of humans, it reacted weakly to them so they didn't change when the rest did. But it wasn't something to celebrate because it was only a matter of time. The virus aimed to make every human a zombie. The guy told us his name was Jude and his little sister was Ella. I felt really bad for them already because it was so unfair that their fate was sealed just because they were humans. I wished there was something I could do but there wasn't. “Oh my goodness, he's so hot,” Tasha whispered into my ears. “Nah, he's just alright.” I was lying. He wasn't just alright. He was smoking hot. His hair was thick and brown and it went all the way to the bottom of his neck. He had the most beautiful grey eyes I had ever seen. They were the features of his that stood out the most even though everything about Jude looked beautiful. His lips were also cute, though a shade thicker than what I had normally seen. “Can I show you where we stay?” The little girl asked. Ella seemed shy and scared but I could see that she was happy to see new faces. Especially faces that didn't want to eat her. Since none of us had the heart to deny the adorable seven-year-old, we followed the girl and her very handsome brother as they led us to where they called home. The house they lived in was a small bungalow that seemed abandoned. But that was the norm; pretty much every house looked the same way. The only thing that made the house look different from all the rest around it was the way it was fenced. Wire fences, blocks, ropes, wooden logs, metals, bricks and a whole lot of things were used to protect the little house they stayed in. It was clear that Jude had spent a lot of time protecting the house—and for very good reasons. “We will have to be on our way,” Nika said. “Be safe and avoid crowded places.” “Now we have to go back in our very productive search of the werewolves," Tasha said, sarcastically. “Wait, did you just say werewolves?” Jude asked. “Yes, you know they are mystical beings that—” Jude cut in. “I know what werewolves are, I've seen quite a few myself and I work with them at times.” Hmm. Werewolves might be nice bunnies after all. “You have seen werewolves?” I asked, finally hearing good news. At the very least, if he didn't know where they stayed, he would know where he saw them last or used to see them. “Can you tell us where you saw them? Please, this is important. ” He nodded affirmatively at Nika. “Well, I can show you where they stay.” Wait, what?! This day just got way better.
