19. The Weapon

ANNA “You are the most powerful person in the whole world,” Mason said, looking at me like I was some hero. Uhm. . .I don't know about that. My little brother had special powers and very strong magic that was nothing like the rest of us, at least it didn't feel like ours at all. But he was still a kid. He still believed that everyone was good, just like kids do. Even more absurd, he believed I was a powerful goddess or something. Sometimes I wished I had the spirit he had. We were all practising our magic like we normally do. Only that now, we were a lot more serious about everything. Now we had a mission. “Let's test our magic, guys,” Nolan said, whistling as we were all in the field behind the building we used a storehouse. By ‘testing' our magic, he meant we should fight each other. It was usually the most fun part of our training and a very important part too. While we were always careful not to hurt anyone, it was important to use your magic against someone to know how effective it would be against an enemy. “Okay, I challenge Tasha," Nika announced, laughing as Tasha made a funny face at her. Same thing every time. Nika challenges Tasha, Nolan challenges me. The other witches trained differently. Nika and Tasha went at each other for about ten minutes before we decided to end it. Nika was way better at spells but Tasha's magic was a little more aggressive so their fights always ended in a tie. “Nolan, are you not going to challenge Anna? Or are you too shy?” Tasha teased Nolan. Nolan and I had fought many times and we have kept records of the results. We have fought fifty-nine times and I have won every single time. “What's the essence? She's going to win anyway.” He said. “It doesn't matter if I win, the most important bit is that we improve as we train.” I turned to Mason who was playing with a piece of concrete in his hands. “Perhaps you can train with Mason if you want someone different.” Nika, Tasha and Nolan began to laugh crazily. I wasn't trying to be funny when I suggested that Nolan should fight with Mason. The training was all about learning to use our powers, winning or losing was secondary. “There's no way I'm fighting a nine-year-old." “It's training anyway, so just take it like you're training him, it's not like you're going to hurt him,” Nika said. Nolan agreed. This was going to be fun because Mason rarely ever used his powers though we all knew there were certain things only he could do. However, that his magic was special didn't mean he was good at combat magic. “Okay," Mason said, clearly not interested in fighting anyone. Nolan whirled wind with his hands and launched it at Mason. It did nothing. The wind lost its force when it got to Mason. As usual, it made no sense. Mason never used spells or anything. He just did whatever the f*ck he wanted to. “Way to go Mason.” Tasha cheered him. Mason whispered some words that meant he was bored and Nolan fell to the ground immediately and stopped moving. We all stared in awe of Mason, he had easily cast a sleeping spell on Nolan who was more trained. What was most intriguing was that he cast a sleeping spell without actually using any spell at all. “He's not dead, you know? He's only sleeping.” Mason said, smiling in that way only he could. “We know, you did amazing!” I said, squeezing his arm playfully. Mason reversed the spell and Nolan regained his consciousness. Just then, I began to feel a certain way. It began with me feeling dizzy and then hearing a voice that was pretty much gibberish. Slowly, the words became clearer and clearer. The voice kept repeating some words over and over again. I initially felt like it was trying to drive me insane. The voice was Aragina's, the voice of the woman whom I had seen in that very weird dream I had a few days ago. She kept repeating the words and then I screamed it out. “Ukele tami supreri bookei unlocke,” I yelled out, and then the voice stopped. Mason and my friends were shocked at how loud I screamed. . .and uhm, why I was screaming in the first place. But that wasn't all that surprised them, they were also shocked when a book appeared in my hands just after I screamed like a banshee. Before even thinking of opening the book, I explained to my friends what happened to me and how the voice had tortured me for about a minute or so. “If it was Aragina, then this book is probably going to be useful in our mission," Nika said, pulling the slim book from my hands. Nika and Nolan spent some time with the book, reading through it. The book had only three pages in it though the covers were a little thick. Tasha and I hovered behind them, anxious to see what the book was all about. It took them an hour to carefully read the book. When they were done, it was clear that the book had something good. “This is wonderful news, the book is the key to everything,” Nolan said between yawns. “How so?” Tasha inquired. Nika answered. “This book is a weapon used to kill vampires, I'm not sure but I think it was a part of the original book used to make vampires.” My Mum had joined us in the field and she was perusing the pages of the book. “How exactly will the book help? Is there a spell to k*ll vampires?” Tasha asked. Nolan shook his head. “There is no such spell.” Tasha was confused. “So, are we going to flog vampires with the book?” Nika cleared it up for us all. “The book does contain one spell but the spell is for the purpose of transformation and not to k*ll anything. However, while the spell cannot kill vampires, what the book will transform into will be of that purpose.” So in simpler words, the book will turn into a weapon that can actually kill vampires. “If that be the case, let's cast the spell," Mum said. Nolan, Nika, Tasha, Mum and I, formed a circle. After getting candles lit and burning certain herbs on the lit candles, we began to cast the spell. After the fifth time of chanting the spell, the book caught fire and kind of exploded. The explosion was scary so we all drifted away from the book. When we came to where the book was, there was no book. It was gone. It had become a knife. The knife looked like any ten-inch mediaeval dagger but the magic in it was very powerful. As I held it, I could feel the energy connect to mine and it felt great. Everyone present held it and they all admitted to feeling the same way as I did. “The power in this dagger is insane, I've never felt anything like this," Nolan said, caressing the blade of the dagger. “So much power in this—just to kill vampires.” Mason took the dagger in his hands and immediately began to scream. Even after he threw the weapon on the ground, he kept yelling. Then the worst happened. His hands caught fire and the fire began to burn with more intensity. Mum was insanely worried. I tried to use my magic to stop the fire from burning him but it was all in vain. Mum quickly ran to him and pulled off a bracelet from his neck and then the fire went off. Even better, Mason's hands healed immediately and he claimed to be alright. As with nearly everything that had to do with Mason—it made no sense. Mum put the bracelet back on him. “Mum, what was that all about?” I asked. “Nothing you need to know now,” she turned to the rest of us, “we need to get help, this knife won't kill the vampires on its own, we need to ally with the werewolves.” Werewolves? We have never met any before. “Aren't they dangerous?” Nolan asked. Mum was pretty sure they were alright. “I trust alpha Theo Holland, he's one of the best people I ever met.” A frown came on her face. “But I'm afraid I'll have to allow you all to go out on your own and find him however you can. I have no clue but I can only hand you a picture of him.” Mum explained to us why we needed the werewolves. The werewolves, no doubt, were no match to the vampires but they were powerful so they could help us in taking the vampires down. We all left the training ground and went about our ways. “Mum, why did the dagger react that way to Mason?” She took her face away from me. “I don't know.” “Mum, are you lying?” “No, I'm not." “Yes, you are." “Why then did you ask?” I held her shoulders. “He is my brother and I love him. Please tell me why the dagger did that to him.” “Get the werewolves and I will tell you everything and more.” She walked away right after saying that.
