It had been a week, and all the jobs Alice had applied for had come back in a negative reply, leaving her down, she lay on her bed as she pleaded for any deity looking down at her to give her the job that the last job would pull through.
She went through her day washing dishes as Lily was still in school and would not return until much later especially since it was a Friday.
Her phone then rang as an unknown number called her, she immediately picked up hoping for it to be the company, only for it to be the alpha she had been avoiding all month...Nolan.
"Hello, Alice, are you there?" the alpha asked, his voice annoying her to the depth
"What do you want Nolan?"
"Thank God" he sighed over the phone making her blood boil, why was he talking as if he cared? but the word got stuck as she waited for him to say something.
"Can we talk?"
"No, we can't."
"Amb-"
She didn't wait for a second before ending the horrid call that brought down her already low mood, as she felt her rejected wolf tremble in annoyance
she then tossed her phone to the couch she let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding as she heard his voice, this is what she didn't want, she didn't want to left alone with her thought, and now she is.
she couldn't stop thinking about Nolan, did he not love her? then what were the years together for? just to toy with her? And all at once, their whole relationship was thrown away, a wolf that she had hoped to mate and spend her forever with, maybe the fates just were not with her.
Her phone then buzzed, informing her of an incoming call, she almost switched off her phone but she looked at the number to see it was a different one, giving her a reason to answer.
"Hello?" She answers this time skeptically holding it and hoping it not be Nolan.
"Yes hello, Miss Scott?"
"Yes, this is she."
"I'm calling to inform you, that your application went through and you have been accepted for the role of personal secretary."
"Really?!"
"Yes, I called to inform you about this and inform you, that you Are to resume unfailingly by Monday morning, other information will be passed to your email, have a nice day. Miss Scott." the lady at the end of the call said
"Y-yeah, you too," the phone then click off as Alice sat there in thought as it suddenly hit her like a truck, that she had just gotten the job!
"I got there I get I got the job!" She squealed in glee as she made invisible punches in the air out of happiness
Without much thought made her way to her friend's apartment that was right across the hall dressed in a big shirt that covered her shorts in her messy bun and glasses as she banged loudly
"Rob! Robin! you in?" she banged at her friend’s door
The door suddenly opened to reveal her friend's latest hook-up, who stood with a towel as he sized her up with a seductive gaze that had Alice eye-rolling at beta at the back of her eyeballs if that was humanly possible.
"Hey, Cameron, right?" She asked unsurely
"No, it's Devan," he replied looking s little hurt by her giving him a stranger's name,
"Is she in? I need to"
"I'm here! I'm here!" Robin hollers as she rushed to the door tying her robe, her blonde curly hair still wet as she just came out from the shower, though she was female her secondary gender was that of alpha, with her aura demanding attention and respect everywhere she went and being able to pull anyone into her bed, omega, betas, and even alphas alike, that didn't stop her from having a soft spot for the Scott sisters who she had genuinely bonded with, the three of them were like a little pack.
She had then gestured for the beta to go back in so they could talk in private, "Hey what's up?" She asked
"I got the job!" Alice said with joy
"Oh my God! you did?", they were still talking in hushed whispers," you know what? I need to throw this guy out but please give me exactly 7 minutes I will be in your apartment she said and winked making Alice giggle,
"Ok, I'll be waiting."
And she did not disappoint, 6 minutes in she came knocking at Alice’s door with wine in her hand but still in her robe they were the only two that share the building’s third floor
"Congrats baby!" She screamed as she hugged her, but as she looked back at Alice's face, she didn't look that happy anymore.
"What is it, what happened, did the company say something?
"No,"
"Then what is it?"
"I just remembered, I shouldn't be too happy about this,"
"Why not!?, it's not like you killed someone for the position,"
"I know but," Alice stopped halfway as she put her lips in thought
"I didn't tell you this because I thought you would judge me."
"Really? Alice, we've been friends for over two decades why would I do that?"
"I had a one-night stand!" She confessed immediately making Robin chuckle.
"That's the big secret that made you think I would turn my back on you? I do that often remember?" she told Alice as she recalled the situation that just occurred with Devan,
"Ugh, I feel so stupid,"
"But how does that affect your mood or anything?" Robin asked still confused about the situation.
"Guess I have to explain it from the start."

"So, you're telling me after that fucker tried to touch you, then the f*****g scumbag broke up with you, and then you slept with like you said I quote, 'the hottest man you had ever been with,' and now you saw him at the company you've been accepted to, and he seems to be someone of power in the company? s**t girl, even though I'm a writer I could never come up with this s**t, wow,"
"I know," Alice said as she groaned in agony, placing her head on her friend's lap for comfort.
"For now, just don't think about it, who knows maybe you could be in a different department, you wouldn't know he's there"
At that moment, Alice then got an email notification from the company, listing down her work duties, the CEO’s schedule, and everything related to his workflow, scrolling down for her to come upon pictures of the main power holders in the firm for her to memorize their faces that are the shareholders, the CEO....wait, what?! She scrolled back immediately as she jumped off her friend's lap scaring Robin in the process.
"Robin," Alice said her blue eyes widening as she stared at her phone.
"What, say something you're scaring me," she said as she took a sip of her wine
"It's him," Alice explained as she panned her phone screen in her friend's direction "he's the one-night stand, Luke!…but his name is Lucas?"
The shock made Robin almost choke on her wine as her eyes widened.
"Lucas? Do you mean Lucas Romano? s**t, this just got a whole lot better and you're his new secretary, babe I don't believe in God but there's got to be a deity out to get you or something."
"Maybe I should just decline the job," Alice said as she immediately took her phone to dial the company.
"No! Don't do that, you don't owe him anything, you are working for yourself and your baby sister, for your future, he may not even want to talk about it, so just keep it cool and keep it professional," Robin advised
"And I would also like to see your wardrobe, we have to go shopping."

Monday came and Alice was excited for her first day, she couldn't wait to work, and even though she tried to deny it she was elated to see Lucas again, as thoughts of him brought butterflies to her belly.
She made her way into the Romans Building, as she made her way straight to the elevator.
Robin went all out on the shopping spree as she forces her to wear daring dresses that would have never tried
She looked at herself in the mirrors paneled around the elevator as she wore a skin-tight oxblood long-sleeve top paired with a black slinky slit skirt that hugged her body at the right places and Jimmy Choo pointy pumps that Robin gifted her, making her look effortlessly breathtaking, as she was oblivious to the stares of an interest she got at the lobby before taking the lift.
With the doors almost Closing, she heard footsteps approaching, so she impulsively stopped the elevator doors from closing but stood rigid a second later from the familiar faint scent of him.
"Thank you" she heard the familiar voice say as she looked up next meeting the eyes of the CEO who smiled at her with an unknown glint in his eyes.
"You're welcome," she said quietly already fidgeting from the sudden encounter, and worse they were in an enclosed lift, bringing back the thought of their night together,
She tried encouraging herself with Robin's words "just keep it cool and keep it professional" Alice whispered to herself, she then faced him with a smile.
"Good morning sir, I took a look at your schedule and you have a meeting with-"
"-Do you not remember me or are you just faking it?" he asked abruptly making Alice speechless as she tried to recollect herself.
"I don't understand what you mean sir "
He then turned his body to her fully coming closer, she backed up to the wall of the elevator her heart pounding in her chest from how close he was, she could count his lashes as he looked at her with his challenging hazelnut eyes, and scent filling her nostrils, with his eyes dead set on hers, like he was daring her to lie.
As he placed his both hands beside her trapping her in between, staring at her lips and then back to her eyes with a mischievous glint in them as he moved closer.
"Should I remind you then? " he said smirking.
As the butterflies grew in her stomach, and Lucas leaned closer, all that Alice could think was that she was so f****d.
