Finally the day had come, when father left me with total control. I'll have to take care of all his responsibilities and make important decisions about life and death. I was as freaked out as excited, but everything went smoothly until I saw a tiny light in the middle of the abyss. I found myself approaching the tiny flame that danced and mesmerized me with its colors and shine. It was the first time I've seen a soul flame of this color, like the mixture of a blood orange and the softest orange of the winter sunset. As I approached it, I prepared myself to gently lead to the right direction, but suddenly, the soul got a figure, it was a young girl and she looked directly at me. I couldn't see her features, only her silhouette in this form, but I knew that her eyes must had been gorgeous, based on the color of her soul.
- Holy shit... - she said and I got held back. Her voice was really nice and calm. I immediately liked it, but wait a sec... Voice?!
- Do you see me? - I asked but she became motionless. I walked in front of her and waved my hand in front of her face. The girl was a lot shorter than I, almost two heads. I wondered what happened to her to end up here with such a beautiful soul... Out of nowhere she grabbed my hand and I got so surprised that I squeaked and jumped back like a frightened cat.
- f*****g hell! You do see me! - she nodded and kept staring at me.
- How could this happen? Hey did you have an accident? - the tiny girl shrugged and with the same calm voice, like the play of a flute, she said.
- Define accident. - my eyes widened "Oh dear Lord... She sees and hears me..."
- An event that happens by chance or that is without apparent or deliberate cause. - she shrugged again and finally released my hand although, funnily, I felt a paging empty sensation with her getting further. I didn't want this soul to disappear.
- I suppose we can say so, I've overdosed myself but it wasn't intentional, although, I don't really mind it. My life sucked. So, what comes now? Purgatory? Or am I directly going to Hell? - "Good questions.... Fuck... I can't believe this is happening at my first solo day! Let's check the manual dad wrote. There must be something in it! - I thought and without answering her questions I sat on the ground and started reading the manual." Great... We have everything here from zombies to mummies but nothing about souls that talk and walk and see in the abyss."- I got too immersed in the manual but a soft chuckling brought me back to my reality. She was standing behind me reading the book. I jumped up holding it to my chest, covering her view." Who knows what horrible things are going to happen if she reads it?!"
- No peeking, no touchy touchy! - she laughed sweetly and I found myself smiling.
- I'm sorry but am I dreaming? I mean you look like the grim reaper and we are in an endless darkness, yet you are reading a book titled "101 ways to die" full of instructions about people's soul who passed away.
- This is private stuff! Why did you read it?
- I got bored!
- Bored? - She must be kidding with me! "Bored?! Girl... You are dead! Or something similar. f**k! Dad is going to kill me... Well it was nice till it lasted. " I thought and sighed.
- Listen here Gingersnap.
- My name is Kate. - she said crossing her arms in front of her chest. Her voice sounded a bit annoyed, but for some freaky reason, I enjoyed it.
- Kate Gingersnap, you are supposed to be dead, but I have no idea what you are doing in the abyss.
- What do you mean by you have no idea?
- Are you fading away or did you originally had issues with your hearing? As I said, I don't know why you are here. You should be either dead or alive. People who end up here don't spend such a long time here because they pass away or getting CPR.
- Okay... I suppose I'll just have to wait then.
- Probably. But I can't leave you here unattended. - I made a bench for ourselves and listened to her story. I pulled the hood down to see her better and she giggled.
- Don't laugh at me! - I put it back on my head but she grabbed it pulling it down again and staring right into my soul. My insides trembled by her gaze. I felt suddenly naked in front of her. As if she could see... Me.
- I'm not laughing! I just thought that you are deadly handsome! - I sighed.
- You should end up in Hell with such a horrible sense of humor! - she punched me in the shoulder and said.
- Add abuse to the list too! - I kept listening to her story and felt angry. How on Earth could someone hurt her this much? Even after experiencing all these she is a little chatterbox here telling me everything she went through. But then, I realized, she was telling me everything because she accepted the fact that she was dead. My heart hurt, she shouldn't be here. So I went against all odds and decided to help her get her life back. I resurrected her and stayed by her side in the hospital as a cat. Soon I had to understand what addiction really looked like. Kate was trembling in all her body and in pain whenever her eyes were open. But it looked like the talk with the psychologist helped her a bit. We were laying in her hospital bed and Kate finally stopped crying. I've caressed her face resting my head on the side of her shoulder.
- Do you see Gingersnaps? You are already getting better. - she caressed my hair and took a deep calming breath. I've noticed that my presence helped with her fear, so if that's what she needs to get better, I'll be here. Also, I hated to admit, but this wasn't purely for her... I liked Kate the first moment I saw her soul. And now... That I could see her real face. She became the most gorgeous woman in the world. The tiny freckles around her nose, the dark red almost brown hair that's curls wrapped around my fingers, those unique eyes and the peachy little lips that pursed whenever she was afraid. The twitch of her nose when someone approached the room. Everything seemed perfect for me.
- I'll see once it comes true. I'm afraid of the pain that I'll experience in the sanatorium, and who knows what that family is hiding. - she said sceptically but I already knew where she's going to live once she is released from the sanatorium. So I looked deeply into her eyes and grinned.
- Oh, I wouldn't worry because of them! - Kate raised an eyebrow and tilted her head.
- You know something... - she said and I sat up shrugging.
- I know many things! Rest a bit more, I have to work a bit, souls don't find their way alone! - I was about to pull my hood up and disappear but Kate sat up and wrapped her arms around my torso.
- Don't leave me alone... - she mumbled and her fingers were shaking while she held onto me. I wrapped my arms around her back and pulled her closer.
- I'll never leave you alone, I'm going to be near just call my name if anything happens and I'll be here. Okay? - she lifted her head up, her face was completely red but she nodded. Her fingers slowly released my clothes and she laid down on her side.
- See you later Gingersnap! - she groaned something to the nickname and I pulled my hood up. I caressed her head and surrounded her with a calming scent. Kate fall asleep with a sweet little smile in the corner of her mouth, and I let her rest. "We have a long journey ahead, little soul."
