Life, Death and everything in between

1072 Words
Kate Everything happened so fast that my mind seemed to struggle to comprehend all. I sat in the window and watched the flowers, also Dean's attempts to grew me some trees in the garden, while Life did the same task effortlessly. Life, Death, Donna, Dean... All of them were so real, so true, I could hear them, touch them, yet they felt so untouchable at the same time. As the concept of their whole being, we regular mortals knew they existed, there were moments of our lifetime when we could see and experience them, yet we couldn't truly understand it all. Was Life the journey and Death the end? But if it was that way, why was I more alive by the death's side than being surrounded by life itself? Time passed quickly and I heard a soft knock on my door. I got up to open it, Dean was standing in my door, looking a little unsure and lost. - Hi Kate, dinner is ready. Would you like to join us? - he asked kindly and honestly, I was still freaked out a bit, but his golden eyes looked at me full with hope. I couldn't help but smile and caress his face. - Yes! - he stood there for a moment more. Gently moving my hand from his face to his mouth, kissing the palm of my hand and holding it afterwards. We walked downstairs holding hands, and I was sure that my face looked like a ripe tomato after that little gesture. We walked through the living room and arrived to the kitchen, that was opened together with the dining room. The furniture was white and cottage style, different herbs hang everywhere, while the tableware was decorated with tiny flowers. Life was already sitting at the table and she waved me to join her. Dean released my hand for a moment and pulled my chair out, next to Life. I sat down and he took a seat on my other side. I looked at the open kitchen, only to see Grim and Donna dressed as ordinary people. Donna wore an ACDC t-shirt and some comfy looking leggings, while Grim had a white t-shirt on and a pair of black training trucks. Donna put her hair in a high ponytail and stirred the food with a hungry smile. Grim rested his head on her shoulder and she gave him a spoon of bolognese sauce for tasting. He ate it and turned around, giving some dry herbs for Donna. She put them into the meat, while Grim walked to the table with a huge bowl of spaghetti pasta and some soft drinks. I must've stared at them too much because Life giggled and gently pinched my arm. - You are not dreaming little one! - They look so human. - I whispered and immediately covered my mouth thinking I've made a disrespectful comment to the ones who saved me. Donna chuckled and walked to the table with the pot of sauce and put it down before saying. - Chill Kate! Even if he is Death himself, and she is Life, they also put their legs into their jeans one after the other!- I smiled and Life rolled her eyes. - Unless I want to do it otherwise! - Grim smiled at her comment and we got some food for ourselves. Once everyone's plate was full, Grim turned to me, lifting his glass of grape juice and said. - To Kate, our new family member! - we all cheered and ate while having a completely normal conversation. I was wondering if they tried to act this way to make me feel more comfortable, or if this was their true identities. Dean leaned to my ear and whispered. - It always goes like this. - our eyes met and I blushed. His father smiled at me and Grim added. - Ever since I married Donna, I started to understand what humans were truly are. I never had a close encounter with them like Life does daily, I only treated their souls after they passed away. I even wanted to eradicate them when they started to show signs of malice and cruelty, but Donna changed my mind. I fell for her soul at first sight and gave her life back, so she could live it the way she wanted. - Donna held his hand and took the storytelling from there. - My soul wandered for centuries, until Life found me and gave me a new start. I couldn't get Grim out of my head and when my new parents passed away, we finally found each other again, funnily by my first grave, which I never searched for. - I married Donna and we lived as ordinary humans for a while, but it didn't go well for me to meet people and to get close to them. - Grim admitted. - Why? Did you still resented them? - I asked curiously and he shook his head. - It is really difficult to let someone go, you cherish. As people we met passed away, I realized how lucky I was to meet Donna and to be with her. - That's when we moved to an alternative timeline, we saw everything and had easy pass between the worlds, but didn't interfere, only when it was necessary. - Donna explained. - Once we settled down, from time to time, we went on some sort of vacation with Donna. She showed me the world and what it meant to be truly alive. - Grim said with so much adoration and love in his voice that I couldn't help but yearn for it. "I wish someone would cherish me and love me this much..."- I thought and Grim smiled, he took a sip of his drink and winked at me mischievously. I suddenly remembered that he could see what my heart desired and I felt embarrassed. Life noticed it and she laughed wholeheartedly hugging me to her side. - Oh my dear little creature! You are so incredibly adorable! - she said and acted like a tipsy aunt would during a Christmas meal in the movies. Suddenly, I felt tears falling from my eyes and Dean gave me a tissue from his pocket. They didn't ask what was wrong, or why I was crying, everyone at the table understood my heart perfectly and this feeling was truly reassuring and otherworldly.
