“What are you trying to tell me?” Mike bellowed, anger coursing through his veins. “Isn't this the best hospital in the city? Why can't you fix the old man!” he yelled through gritted teeth, frustrated to the core. “I'm sorry, Mr Sullivan, but there's nothing I can do on this. Presently, he's in a coma. We'll have to wait for him to wake up.” he paused for a while to look at the other members, “If you'll excuse me.” the doctor said curtly before turning around to leave. Mike clenched his fists as he glared at the retreating figure of the doctor. He ran his hands through his hair and sighed. Right now, all fingers were pointed at Amy as the suspect, but she couldn't be arrested because there was no evidence. Now he would have to wait patiently for his grandfather to wake up. Only then would he be able to place Amy behind bars. As he walked out of the hospital, his phone made a buzzing sound, signifying an incoming call. “What's up, man?” Jeremy's cherry voice rang out as soon as the call got connected. Mike rolled his eyes as he got into his car. “You sure don't know when to call, do you?” he said lazily, his mind still baffled by his grandfather's I'll health. “For you, everytime isn't a good time, Mike.” Jeremy chuckled as he played with his desk pen. Seated across him was his assistant, Reya. Jeremy was Mike's childhood friend. Someone who had been with him through thick and thin. While Mike was proud, arrogant and cold, Jeremy was the complete opposite. He was charming, sweet and calm. A complete contrast to his best friend. However, their distinct characters seemed to strengthen their bond. After all, unlike charges were said to attract. Jeremy enjoyed teasing his friend just so he could see him frustrated, but that wasn't the reason for his call today. Worry creased his forehead as soon as he heard the news of Vincent Sullivan’s sickness. The old man was rumoured to have consumed a poisonous substance and Mike's hidden wife, Amy, was the suspect. As Mike simply stayed mute, Jeremy decided to ask, “Was she really behind it?” his voice was laced with curiosity, and Mike needed no soothsayer to tell him he was referring to Amy. His grip on his phone tightened and his eyes blazed with fury, “I'm certain that sly witch poisoned my grandfather just so she could inherit all his properties. She's just too cunning!” he spat, extremely furious. Jeremy had to place his phone far away from his ears due to Mike's loud voice. “Buddy, she's your wife, don't you think you should have heard her out before kicking her out of her own home? I heard she had a dispute with her own family. Where do you expect her to go?” Jeremy commented, wondering why his best friend acted so rash. He knew Mike despised Amy, but that didn't qualify the ill treatments the young girl received everyday of her life. “Has nowhere to go? Man, I'm pretty sure she has a lot of places to go. Do you think she's all innocent?” Mike chuckled, amused by Jeremy's words. “For someone who forced herself on me, you don't think she wouldn’t act that way with other men? Look, I don't regret divorcing her. I just want her out of my life.” he added, still seated in his car. “Divorced?” Jeremy gasped, disbelief written all over his face. “You really mean this, man. I thought you only chased her out. You were so quick with the divorce process.” he added, giving an apologetic look to his assistant who smiled bashfully. For the past few minutes, she had been in her boss's office just because she had important information to tell him. However, her boss chose that time to call his best friend, Mike. As Jeremy was the current CEO leading his father's cooperation, the young lady had no choice than to wait. Besides, staring at Jeremy while having a conversation was so satisfying. Mike rolled his eyes at Jeremy's words. “Can we stop talking about her? I feel disgusted already. When can we meet up? I need to clear my mind.” he sighed, exhausted by everything happening around him. “Grandfather is in a coma and he has a 30% chance of surviving. I really hope he makes it.” “Relax, brother. Grandfather is a strong man.” Jeremy comforted as he forced a smile, while deep down he knew 30% chance of survival wasn't really a great number. The old man was as good as dead. “I'll clear up my busy schedule for next week. How about then?” Jeremy asked, putting the issue of the old man's sickness aside. “Sounds good.” Jeremy nodded. On the other hand, Amy patiently waited for the housekeeper. While waiting for him to arrive with a mouthwatering delicacy, her eyes darted around the room, bored to death. Every now and then, her gaze would land on the figure who was so focused on the book he was reading. For the past fifteen minutes, Luther’s eyes were fixed on the book but his mind was elsewhere. “Who are you and why did you save me?” a soft and cherry voice was suddenly heard, jolting Luther to reality. While he had thought Amy wouldn't ask any questions, she had actually proved him wrong. He slowly raised his head to look at her, his cold gaze fixed on her petite figure. “Forget about the first question but I'll answer the second.” Amy pressed her lips in a thin line, slightly disappointed he wouldn't answer her first question; but since he was willing to answer the other, she decided to add another question. “If you're not willing to tell me who you are, then you must at least tell me your name.” she smiled, adjusting herself on the bed. Luther placed his book on the table and placed a leg above the other. “About your last question, my name is Luther.” he replied, his eyes never leaving hers. Amy furrowed her brows, wondering why the name sounded familiar, but no matter how hard she tried to recall why, she came up with nothing. “Moving on to the next, why are you helping me?” she threw her second question since Luther seemed to be in the mood to talk. No matter the angle at which she looked at him, the young man seemed to be a man of few words. “Let's just say I'm fulfilling a promise. A promise to protect you.” “But I don't even know you. Who made you promise to protect me?” Amy asked, baffled by his words.
