Chapter 13Hazy images struggled through a web as thick as cheesecloth. The pounding in her ears matched the metered rhythm of light pulsing against her eyelids. The last thing she remembered was a flash of light. Was she dead? Zofia moaned. “Wait!” A voice cut through the cotton in her head. “I think she's waking up. Zofia?” The familiar voice calling to her was enough to pull her the rest of the way out of a black abyss, back to the land of the living. Faces loomed before when she slitted her eyes. Dorian's expression was one of worry. Tillie's leathery face crinkled into a weak, but relieved smile. Her children both gaped at her as though she had returned from the grave. “Wow. What happened?” She formed the words over a tongue that stuck to the roof of her mouth like it was glued. “
