It appears that I've been stripped away from luck today. Because by the time I had finished packing up my books, the red haired girl's suddenly nowhere to be seen. My initial plan was to introduce myself and maybe get to know her a little but the turn of events honestly leaves me no choice but to do it tomorrow.
I take in a deep breath, exhaling. If my resources are correct, she's probably that new transfer student everyone's been hyped so about. It's rare that the school's recieving a new student in the middle of semester.
I clutch the bag of my strap tightly and saunter to the left side of the hall. I need to make a pit stop at the toilet first. Like a pest I can't get rid off even if I wanted to, Abel catches up on me not a minute too soon.
"I told you to wait for me."
"I was distracted."
"By who?"
"A cute girl."
At my statement, Abel stops dead in his tracks. "A girl?"
Grinning, I hand him my bag to hold before slipping inside the girls toilet. The moment I'm in, the red headed girl from before walks out from one of the stalls. So she hasn't left yet.
She walks over to the wide mirror, tapping on the faucet before splashing a few drops into her face. There's a visible bruise under her eye to which she quickly hides it under a band aid. It looks like a scratch. Not only that, I can spot a a visible purple bruise on her arm. I wonder what happened.
"Hi."
She turns around, capturing my gaze that's been shamelessly staring at her. Her face's still damp from the previous splash, a few of her hair dripping with water. When I slowly start to approach her, she appears hesitant to respond at first but does so nonetheless.
"Um. Hey."
My lips twist up into a friendly smile. She's probably the shy type of person who doesn't speak unless spoken to. My bathroom urges can wait for a couple of minutes.
"You're that new transfer student right?" I extend my hand for a shake, observing the way her eyes flicker down in a fazed manner. "I'm Elka."
Again, she looks hesitant.
"Van..I'm Van." Her hand finally claims my own after the few awkward seconds of hesitation. I tilt my head to the side and push through with my original plan.
"Nice to meet you, Van. If there's anything you need, feel free to ask me. I hope we can be good frie-" I can't continue since I've been abruptly cut off. Van takes her hand back and allows it to slide down to her side.
"Friends?" The sudden change of her tone sends an odd shiver down my spine. Unlike before, it sounds like she daring me to confirm. Her tongue pokes the inside of her cheek as she finally looks up to stare at me with bluntness. "Elka was it? It was nice meeting you too, but don't get too ahead of yourself. I'm not looking for...a human companion yet."
And with that, she takes her bag and leaves. I find myself lost as I stare at my own reflection. Van mentioned something about a 'human companion'. Could it be that she's not human?
After dealing with things I needed to do in the bathroom, I finally return back to Abel outside. Said person doesn't fail to notice my lost expression as we step out of the school's perimeters. It's not until I'm buckling myself in the passsngers seat and he's driving in the streets that he finally talks.
"You look lost. Did something happen?"
"I was just wondering. Could there be more of you in our school?"
Abel let's out a little smile and stops at a red light. With a light expression, he turns to me and gently caress my hair. I find the behavior to be a bit odd since it's coming from him. Where did this guy come from? But most importantly, what did he do to my stubborn, egoistic bestfriend?
"So that's what you've been thinking about?" Chuckles the silver headed boy. I fix the sides of my hair once he's retracted his arm back. "Yup. I can't exactly tell pin point who they are but all I know is that there are at least four kinds of species running around in our school."
It never crossed me that there'd be a different breed attending the same school as Abel and I until now. If I've never noticed the differences, then they're really good at putting up a human exterior.
"What do you mean by four?"
Abel smirks a little. "Four species. Five if we include humans such as yourself."
That last statement brings me back to my conversation I had with Van. She used similar choice of words too. I bite my lip. It explains a lot why I thought she looked to be so out of this world. Her appearance itself seemed to scream royalty and not to mention the unique color of her eyes. I'm only considering it now. She has dark crimson eyes that.
"Werewolves, witches, goblins and vampires."
I can't help my mouth from gaping open like a fish out of water. All this time, I've been attending the same school with these kind of people? Supernaturals?
"Woah." How they're able to suppress their real identity really amazes me now. Then again, after that incident, Abel's never showed me his wolfish capabilities again.
Thinking about it now makes me want to see it though.
"Why are you suddenly asking about it?"
I run my fingers across my hair and relax my shoulders. "I met someone and thought they acted weird. One thought led to another. I guess I got curious. By the way. Can you do it again?"
It's been a couple of years since he's last shown me his wolf. I should be over my traumatized phase already. He spares me a confused glance. "Do what again?"
"I want to see him. Your wolf."
