Marcus opened his eyes and stared at the empty bed. She was gone. He thought with a sigh of relief. He didn’t deal with the women he f****d with. Though Carrie was different. Out of the women he’s been involved with she was the only one who lasted. She understood him. He just wished his wolf would accept her. She wasn’t the strongest, but she wasn’t the weakest either. He would have to avoid her when his wolf acted out, but they could make a life together.
Marcus shook his head, because he knew that was just him thinking as a man. It didn’t work that way.
He sighed and got out of bed. He needed to get ready for a meeting with the alphas of the packs that were closest to him. He’d heard reports of sighting of rogues, they weren’t many and it seemed the alphas could take care of them, but he didn’t want to take any chances. They needed to figure out where they were coming from.
Marcus walked into the bathroom and took a quick shower. Once he was done he got dressed selecting his grey suit and white shirt. He looked at himself in the mirror. He liked to make sure that he looked well put together – that he was in control on the outside, because on the inside it was his wolf who was in charge.
Marcus smoothed his hand over his chest, making sure that the suit sat just right. He looked sharp, and powerful. He nodded to himself and then walked out of the room.
He headed to the dining room, where breakfast was served on the long table. He was so hungry. Last night he didn’t get to eat dinner and his wolf didn’t seem to be interested in catching anything. Marcus frowned as he sat down as memories from last night filtered into his mind. His wolf has roamed around the forest, with no particular direction in mind. He had moved in circles going over the same place over and over.
He wondered what was up with him. Marcus shrugged, because he could never figure him out. He had a mind of his own, and he didn’t let him into it.
He started to eat. Luke joined him a few minutes later with the other members of his pack. They were few since his wolf’s power could only be tolerated by a few wolves. But he couldn’t live alone. Regardless of his wolf’s power wolves need a pack. Luke’s mate joined them as well. Marcus stared at her belly. The baby was growing, he thought both happy for his friend and a little sad. He was supposed to have had a pups of his own a while ago.
But…he shook his head not wanting to think about Layla she was paying for her sins at the moment. Her daughter was in his grasp. That thought gave Marcus a bit of satisfaction.
“Do you think the rogues might be some kind of rebellion against you?” Luke asked. Marcus didn’t know. But he knew that a lot of the alphas that were under him didn’t like it. But he was too powerful for them to challenge him. They could be trying to find a way to remove him. If they made the packs ungovernable then they could bring him down.
“I don’t know. It’s just strange that they pop up every now and then as if someone is making them or something. I could be wrong,” Marcus said going back to his food. They finished up their food and walked to his office, where he usually held his meetings. He watched as Luke walked his mate up the stairs to their wing of the house.
The house was divided into numerous winds so that the other wolves wouldn’t have to feel his power whenever it surged up at random times. His wing was the furthest from the others, and I was on the first floor. It was backed up into the forest so that his wolf could easily go for a run.
His heart squeezed a little as he watched them. It was strange, but sometimes he really thought that he wanted something like that…a mate who could be by his side, and other times he felt like was setting himself up for a fail, because there was no wolf that could stand his power.
He thought about Carrie again, and the way they could live their lives. If he tried he could make it work. His wolf deep inside growl his displeasure, making Marcus shake his head.
“You have to be reasonable,” he told him. “You might like being alone, but I don’t,” he said as he walked into his office. He walked to sit behind his desk.
He turned on his computer and waited for it to boot up. Luke walked in after a few minutes.
“They have arrived,” he said walking to the door. He opened it and five alphas walked in. Marcus rounded the desk and came to a stop in front of them.
“Welcome, alpha Kevin, Fin, Michael, Rodrick, Edward,” he said showing them to the couches that sat before the desk. Everyone sat down, and Marcus walked to the lone chair that was set a few paces away from the couches. “Our rogue situation hasn’t gotten serious but I am a little concerned about the frequency of the appearance of the rogues. It hasn’t shown a pattern since each of your packs had dealt with them accordingly, but I don’t want to leave everything to chance and wait for something to happen. But how can we stop them from appearing at all?” Marcus asked.
“Yes, alpha. The rogues that my pack managed to capture and kill did show signs of being influenced by something. Usually rogues are mindless and tend to be driven by killing but these ones still had some consciousness. It’s as if a new species of werewolves is emerging,” Alpha Fin spoke up. He was a little older than the other wolves and must have experienced rogues sometime in his life, so Marcus trusted his deduction on the situation.
“You think its natural,” Marcus narrowed his eyes on him. The alpha fidgeted under his stare.
“No. That was a poor choice of words, but I am saying that there is intent to their actions. We don’t know what that is yet. But I am sure that we will see more of them,” he said.
“It’s just terrifying since those rogues were once normal werewolves. We just don’t know what might happen to our packs, if indeed there is foul play at hand,” alpha Edwards said.
That’s what had Marcus so worried. The rogues they were killing didn’t mushroom out of nowhere they were once someone’s brother, mother, or mate. They had to figure out where they were coming from.
“I will contact the other alphas under my rule and ask them what they…” before Marcus could finish his statement the phone on his desk went off.
“Excuse me,” Luke said walking to the desk. He picked up the receiver “Hello,” he said and went quiet for a few seconds and then his eyes jumped to him. “Yes. I will be there. Of course. I will inform him. Right bye.”
He hung up the phone and waited for Marcus to continue. Marcus went on with what he was saying.
“I’ll ask them what they experienced, and then we can see if they aren’t any similarities,” he said even though his mind was on the phone call that Luke took. They moved on to other matter. And he felt his cell phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out while watching Luke. He read through the sms.
Luke: there is trouble at the school, will be back in a few.
Marcus looked up to see Luke walking out the door. He didn’t know way, but he almost jumped to his feet and said that he will go.
He didn’t need to go. He threw that girl into that school because he didn’t want to deal with her. But something kept nagging him as he continued to sit there.
The meeting went on for a few more minutes, and then they were done. Marcus walked the alphas out of his office, and then returned to his office. He checked a few emails from the other packs that needed his attention. Once he was done he checked his phone to see if Luke has sent anything about the girl.
Mikaela.
What could have happened that needed his attention? he asked himself staring at his phone. Minutes ticked by and nothing happened.
Why wasn’t Luke calling him?
Because he can handle it. He said to himself. He huffed out a breath irritated with himself for even caring about his revenge tool. She was nothing to him, but a tool that he was using to hurt Dimitris and Layla. He should be happy that something happened to her, which meant that she was suffering the way he had intended.
But he didn’t feel any pleasure. He was worried, when he clearly shouldn’t be.
“This is stupid,” Marcus thought turning to computer. He had work to do rather than worry about some seventeen-year-old.
But he couldn’t concentrate.
He shot out of his chair and was about to go down to the garage and drive himself to the damn school when his phone rang.
“About time,” Marcus said his wolf on the surface. He could feel his power thrumming through him. s**t not again. He breathed deep trying to calm himself. He felt it subside a little, but not by much. What the hells was setting it off?
Luke laughed at him.
“What?” Marcus asked irritably.
“You sound like you care,” he said still laughing.
“Are you going to tell me what happened any time soon?” Marcus asked through clenched teeth.
“It’s nothing serious. Mikaela just jumped the fence when she ran away from a fight set up during training,” he said with a grimace. “They managed to bring her back. She’s a little embarrassed because everyone laughed at her.”
“Did you buy her ice cream to make everything better?” Marcus asked sarcastically with a shake of his head. Was she that weak that she would run away from a fight? A fight set up for training at that.
“That’s not right Marcus. This is your fault. You threw her to the wolves…literally. She thinks that she’s human. What do you think she’ll do when facing with a wolf?” Luke asked sounding serious.
“Fight like everyone else,” Marcus said adamantly. “I can’t believe Layla had a weakling like that for a daughter.”
“You can be cruel sometimes you, know that?” Luke said. Marcus could imagine him shaking his head at him.
“She will be fine,” Marcus said hanging up the phone. He stood there for a minute, thinking over his decision. He thought about returning Mikaela home.
No, the word echoed in his mind. He wasn’t done with her yet.
