Mikaela was grateful that Ryan said nothing. They sat there silently and listened to the teacher in front. She was talking about the importance of communicating with their inner wolves – communication fostered a relationship that allowed for growth and the harnessing of the inner power that was in every wolf. Mikaela realized that she’s never tried. But that was because she didn’t think that there was a wolf living within her. She never felt anything inside her. She listened to the others describe what it felt like to communicate with their wolves.
Some said that it felt like talking to a best friend that knew everything about them, and it was comforting to know that he or she was there.
Mikaela touched her chest wishing for a connection with someone like that. A friend who was always there with her all the time. The lesson made her feel lonelier, because she was all alone. And she hasn’t managed to connect with a very important part of herself.
“Tomorrow’s class is in the Cathedral, come bright and early we are going to be doing some shifting. So that we can forge relationships with our wolves, and understand their power,” the teacher said closing the lesson. She walked out. Mikaela looked around her at the others as they walked out of the class. She didn’t know where she was supposed to go next.
“Are you not coming?” Ryan asked next to her.
“What?” Mikaela asked staring up at him.
“To physical,” he said as if it was obvious. Mikaela looked blankly at him. “You know, where we all go after our species class.”
Mikaela just stared at him.
“Come on,” he said offering her his hand to help her get to her feet. Mikaela stood up, and followed Ryan. He didn’t let go of her hand, making everyone look at them. Mikaela gulped, and tried to ignore them. They walked to the back of the class. Everyone was heading there.
“You look like you’re clueless of what happen at the school,” Ryan said looking at her as they continued to walk.
“I came yesterday. No one told me about what happens at the school,” she said. She didn’t tell him that the Alpha King dumped her there. Ryan nodded as if he understood.
“At Benford Academy every supernatural being is here to learn to use their power. And in our case as werewolves we are here to learn to harness our wolves and grow in power. And then we all go to physical training were we practice everything we learned in class. You’re going to see some strange things after we enter that building,” he said pointing in front of them at the cathedral style building. They entered the building. It was huge. Mikaela looked around her impressed by the high ceilings and colourful windows that spanned one wall. It was beautiful with the way the light shone through.
“Yeah, it’s beautiful to look at,” Ryan said next to Mikaela he let go of her hand now. “Do you want to know a secret?”
“What?”
“The light coming through the window. Its filtered so that the vampires can walk freely,” he said pointing to students coming through a different door. They were paler than the other students. Mikaela stared at them. She’s never seen vampires before.
“Wow,” she said.
“Yeah, there are many secrets to Benford Academy. Stick with me and I will reveal them all to you,” he said giving Mikaela a smile that melted her insides. Ryan stared at her as if he wanted to say more.
“There you are,” Rose said interrupting them. “Hey Ryan.”
“Hey, I’ll see you in a minute, Mikaela,” he said walking down one hallway. Mikaela stared after him.
“I guess, we’ve just solved your no boyfriend issue,” Rose said bumping Mikaela’s shoulder playfully.
“No…I,” Mikaela said blushing. She shook her head. But she couldn’t help but think about the way it hand felt when Ryan took her hand. It had felt good.
“Let’s go change,” Rose said taking Mikaela’s hand and dragging her towards the opposite hallway. They walked into the locker room. The noise in there was deafening as everyone spoke at the same time. They were about fifty girls in the room. Rose walked Mikaela to a new locker. They were track outfits in there. Rose moved to her own locker. Mikaela looked around her as everyone took off their clothes to change.
Her hand automatically went to the bite. They were going to see her mark if she took off her clothes in here. She picked up the clothes – there was a grey sweatshirt with the school’s name in the front, a sports bra and short. She hesitated for a minute and then turned away from everyone and took off her clothes and got dressed quickly before anyone could see. She pulled the sweater over her bite mark and made sure that it wasn’t showing.
Rose came to her and they walked out of the locker room to the main part of the cathedral. Other students were already there sitting on the floor around a raised platform that had a cushioned floor. They walked and found a spot on the floor.
“How was class?” Rose asked. “I didn’t think that they will put you in a werewolf class. You don’t smell like one.”
“I don’t. My mother thought me that I am human, since my father was human,” she said finally telling the truth.
Rose stared at her, shock written on her face. “But….” before she could say anything a whistle went off and the man that looked like a coach stepped to the middle of the platform. He had a clipboard and he was reading through it.
“I call you name, get ready,” he said flipping through a few pages on the clipboard. “Listen up. You know I don’t like repeating myself. Shane and Darren, Lane and Tom, Ryan and Gerry, finally our new comer Mikaela and Heather.”
What? Mikaela asked not sure if she heard him right. She turned to Rose.
“Every newcomer goes through it. You face off with the strongest in the pack,” she said with sympathy in her eyes.
“Is Heather the strongest?” Mikaela asked feeling fear fill her tummy.
“No. Its Haile. I guess she didn’t want to fight,” she said looking at where Heather, Bree and Haile were.
Fear filled Makaela. She couldn’t do this.
She was not a werewolf. She was human.
She pushed to her feet, but Rose held her down. “Don’t run. They’ll say that you are a coward if you run. You have to fight.”
“I can’t fight her. I am human remember. I don’t care if they say that I am a coward. I not doing this. I don’t even want to be here,” she said her voice going high at the end for everyone to hear. Everyone turned to her. They stared.
Mikaela snatched her hand out off Rose’s grasp and ran out of the Cathedral. She had to get out of there. She ran to the back of the building, looking up at the trees that she had looked at all night. She didn’t know why, but she knew she will be safe in there. She ran to them, but there was a fence separating the school yard and the forest beyond. Mikaela stared at it, and decided to scale it. Nothing was going to stop her from going there.
She climbed up, using the holes in the fence as stepping stones. She was at the top when she heard the call of a wolf in the wind.
She looked towards the school and saw Haile standing there with her hand folded on her chest. She was a mile away but she could feel her stare on her. It was chilling. Mikaela dropped on the ground on the other side.
Bree and Heather appeared from behind Haile. Rose came running from behind too.
She came to stand in front of Haile.
“Leave her alone,” she shouted. Sparks flew from her palm as she stood there in front of Haile.
“Get out of my way. The fight has already been set,” Haile said shouting so that Mikaela could hear her.
“Yes, in the Cathedral,” she shouted back.
“It doesn’t matter where, she has to honour it,” Haile said waving her hand, and Heather and Bree shot out running towards her. They changed into their wolves midway.
“Run!” Rose shouted. She threw the sparks, they exploded from her palms at Bree and Heather, but they were too fast.
Haile slammed into her knocking her to the ground. Mikaela ran away as the wolves reached the fence. She looked back thinking that it will block them, but she watched in horror as they easily backed up, and jumped the fence.
Mikaela’s heart hammered in her chest as she pumped her legs running.
But she could hear them behind her. They were gaining on her.
Oh God….
