"Hello aunt, hello miss?" I looked at the strangers before me.
"Oh! Yes, sorry, you don't know each other. This is my daughter, Hope," my Aunt Kailee said.
I couldn’t believe it; she had a daughter, one I had never seen in my life. Why didn’t I know about her? My Aunt has been part of my life since I was a kid; I knew the rest of her kids, so why didn’t they mention Hope? She had a huge mark all over her neck that looked like a chocker. It was black and looked like an ancient language written all over her neck. I could see an H on there. Was that a tattoo?
It didn't look like it. If my intuition was correct, it was a mate mark. Was she with her mate? Maybe that is why I haven't met her before, but that means her mother and father sent her with her mate when she was little. That made no sense to me; my father and mother would never have allowed me to go with Jen. They knew we were mates since I was a toddler and still didn't leave us alone at any time. Aunt Kailee is the same as my mom; she wouldn't have allowed Hope to go with her mate to another place.
"Hi," Hope said. "I was kidnapped when I was a kid; that is why you don't know who I am,"
"Hope!" Her mom scolded her.
"Mom, look at his face. He is confused, and he is the son of your best friend. He should know," she said calmly.
I didn't want to ask anything because it looked like Hope had been told not to tell anyone what had happened to her, and she had broken her promise.
"Mom, they are going to find out anyway; you wanted to tell his mom," She said, and Aunt Kailee gasped.
"I didn't-"
"Yes, you didn't tell me anything. I am not stupid, and you also know about my gift," she said.
My aunt and Hope stared at each other, but no one dared to back down.
"You can read minds like my mother?" I asked her to break the awkward silence.
"Your mom can read minds?" Hope asked, surprised.
"Yes, it is not so funny when you are the kid and want to hide something from her," I muttered. Hope laughed at my remark.
"Cool! I would love to meet your mom," Hope said.
Kailee cleared her throat and grabbed Hope's hand.
"Thank you for coming, Killian. Tomorrow, I will take you to our training camp. Alex will be in charge of your training as I have other matters to attend to. I will see you in your final battle, though, where you will have to go against our strongest warriors," she stated.
She clearly wanted us to drop the subject, and I did. I didn't want to get my Aunt Kailee mad; I had just gotten here and didn't want to stir any family drama.
"Thank you so much for letting me stay, Aunt Kailee. I really appreciate it." I tried to plaster a smile on my face. Kailee's eyes hazed, meaning she was mind-linking. "Kale will be here soon; he will take you to your room,"
Kale didn't take long, probably five minutes at most, but during all that time, I was between a very mad Kailee and Hope, who didn't seem to care. Once Kale arrived, I noticed how Kailee's face softened. I let out a breath of relief.
"Hey Killian!" He greeted me happily, "What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I came to train!" I said, excited.
"And how is that mate of yours? Isn't she turning eighteen tomorrow?" He asked, and my smile fell. "Oh! I'm sorry." He apologized, but now all I could think about was Kailee. I didn't know how much her 18th birthday would affect our bond, but she will at least have the necklace I gave her brother to take care of the pain.
"Don't worry, things are going to get better, I hope," I muttered.
"And if they don't?" Hope asked.
"Then she will have to reject me. I appreciate the Moon Goddess's gift; I won't let it go to waste," I said.
"Stupid, if you ask me," Hope whispered.
"Hope Dymond! Stop this nonsense," Aunt Kailee scolded Hope.
"I am telling the truth. You don't have to suffer because of the bond. It is stupid; if someone isn't right for you, you should reject that person and move on!" She retorted.
"Is she telling us to reject Jennifer?" Apolo chimed in.
Even if he tells me that we should reject Jen, he is the only one who can suggest that option. No one else can tell us to reject our mate.
"I don't think she is; she is... projecting," I explained to him.
"Well, she should project somewhere else," He huffed.
"I don't want to mingle into matters I have not been called into, but I get what you feel, Hope. Jen... is complicated. She isn't happy with our mateship, but one day, she will realize that it was for a good reason if the Goddess paired us up. Not all mateships are hearts and sunshine; some are difficult, but I will wait until she is ready to accept the bond," I said.
"Then you should grab a chair," Hope said and ran inside the house.
Kailee yelled at her to stop while Kale looked at me apologetically.
"Sorry, my sister has some trouble with her mate. I hope everything turns out fine, but until then, she is mad at all mates," Kale explained.
"Don't worry, I get it. Can you please show me where I will stay tonight?" I asked him.
"You didn't bring luggage?" He asked me.
"You have no idea what kind of training they do here, do you?" He shook his head, "Well, if I need anything, I will use my magic," I said.
Even if Kale was younger than me, he was freaking tall. He is only a few inches smaller than me. Like Uncle Alex, he has dark brown hair and green eyes, but his facial structure resembles Aunt Kailee. We walked into the pack house, and Kale took me to the visitors' wing. I looked around and noticed that they had made more renovations to the place. Considering that Uncle Alex's pack is now one of the biggest in the country, he must make some adjustments.
"You are huge, Kale. When did you get so big?" I asked him. The last time I came, he wasn't this big. What are they feeding him?
"Uhmm, well, I am fourteen, so yeah, puberty," He said casually.
"Fourteen!? I thought you were twelve." I exclaimed.
"No, man, the last time you were here, I was twelve," He rolled his eyes at me. "Anyway, here is your room. I will tell you to unpack, but since you have nothing, would you like to come with me?" He asked.
"Then why bring me to my room?" I chuckled.
"So you can know where it is. I don't think I can show it to you later, and Mom is probably busy with Hope," He shrugged.
I wished I could help her with whatever happened with her bond. It is clear she is marked, but then it didn't make sense to me: Why was she separated from her mate? The worst pain I experienced was being away from Jennifer. I have used a spell for years, so I don't feel so much pain, but I want to see what happens when she turns eighteen.
“Okay, let’s go, but I must return before midnight,” I warned him. He understood why, so he didn’t ask further questions.
He took me around the pack, showing me around. Uncle Alex has made many changes; according to Kale, they have two pack houses. One is the polar bear side, and the other is the werewolf area. Well, now that some of the wolves have found their mates among the polar bears, they are not segregated anymore.
"So, what is it like having a wolf and a bear?" I asked him.
"Kinda of like you with your Lycan," he explained. "I only have one animal inside me, and we can turn into either one of them. You won't even notice that I am a Polar bear when I turn into my wolf. However, it is not the same for the rest of the hybrids. Some of them have the same advantage as my sister and I do, but others only have one animal side."
"I guess we will have to find out how we work as time passes. I am the first tribrid, but I guess more species will be mated together, and soon, someone will surpass me." I said.
"I don't know if the Gods will choose to do that. First, they need the waters to calm down; it is not easy for the rest of the world to accept us. Thanks to our parents, people accept us, but I don't know if it will be the same with..." he drifted off.
"With Hope?" I asked him.
"Yes, her mate is... complicated," he explained.
"I won't pry, Kale, don't worry," I reassured him. He let out a breath and pointed at a place.
I looked at what he was showing me and noticed that a huge building was under construction. It wasn't another house; it looked like a school.
"What is that?" I asked Kale.
"It is the new project our dads created—the school for all supernatural beings. Everyone can come and study here, and it is bigger than the one in your pack," he said excitedly.
"Considering that more people want to get into our school every year, it only made sense that they built another one. People have found their mates in our school," I added.
"Yeah, I wanted to go, but Dad told me I had to stay here. Since my sister's disappearance, they don't let us go outside much," he explained.
"I thought it was weird that they never let you come to my pack; after all, our parents are very close friends; now I get why," I grabbed his shoulder, and he gave me a faint smile.
I don't know why I never found out about Hope. I guess they got busy between my mother's births and pack stuff. After my mom had Lillian, she had difficulty controlling her power. Lillian has most of my mom's powers, but she got them young, so it was hard for her to take care of her. I had more physical strength, could teleport, and use magic and rapid healing, but my sister... she was something else, and she also got her wolf younger than I did. When she got mad, she could start a fire anywhere in the house; she could disappear into thin air when she was a toddler, so you can imagine a parent trying to find a baby who freaking disappeared. She had telekinesis, too, something that not even my mother has. That is the reason why she never went to school; people were scared of my sister, and she preferred to be alone as well.
"How's your sister?" Kale asked.
"She is fine; she will finish high school in a year," I answered.
"She is still studying at home, isn't she?" He asked me again.
"Yes... and how do you know that?" I inquired.
My sister was not talkative, and as far as I know, she hasn't interacted much with Kale.
"She told me. Remember when you came here for your eighteen birthday, your family came with you?" He said.
I lifted an eyebrow. My family came here, but my sister doesn't interact with anyone.
"Unless he is her mate," Apolo added.
"I don't think so; she would have felt it immediately; that happened with me and Jennifer," I told him.
"And you just told Kale that we must see how we work. Maybe she has to wait until she is eighteen to see if Kale is her mate," Apolo had a good point, and if that were the case, my dad would lose his s**t on Uncle Alex.
I decided to drop the conversation about my sister. Kale took me to a place where pack members gather. It was a small area in the pack house where you could find slot machines, play ping-pong, cards, or even video games. Some she-wolves, who were clearly accompanying their boyfriends, looked at me like I was a grand prize they wanted. That earned me some growls from their male companions.
If I was marked, they might stop looking at me like that. I hated how their eyes roamed my body, and when they noticed I wasn't marked, they started whispering between each other. f*****g hell.
"Hi, bro!" A younger version of Kale but with blue eyes came running towards us. This must be Kyros. "Hi, Killian!" He beamed at us.
"You shouldn't be here," Kale said, rolling his eyes.
"I am twelve now; I can come here if I want. And I wanted you to play with me," Kale wanted to say something to his brother, but I quickly interrupted him.
"We would love to, what are you playing?" I asked him.
"Ping pong!" He said, grabbing our hands to take us to the table.
Some other kids were there, and fortunately, there wasn't a she-wolf in sight. I had a great time, and I had to go easy on them because of their age. I didn't even notice that it was already late, the sun had set down, and I forgot to go to my room...
A loud, piercing howl escaped my lips as the new day arrived. Jennifer just turned eighteen, and pain was consuming Apolo and I. He tried to control my magic to go back to our pack. I heard people screaming for help, but I couldn't focus on anything. Then I started feeling really cold, meaning Aunt Kailee must be here.
"Sleep," she ordered, and I obliged, letting darkness consume me.
