Third Person's POV
Caleb faced Quincy after they reached the lake.
"I'm sorry," he started, not giving her any minute to spare or prepare her, "I don't want a mate right now." He dropped it like a bomb as if it was nothing. "Not especially if it's you." He looks at her from head to toe. He had disgust on his face. Like something he doesn't approve of is in front of him.
Confusion was painted on her face. Wondering, did he just say sorry? Sorry for what? She looked at him.
"I'm only fifteen." He continued. "My life is just starting. " he brushed off his hair with his right hand. "And you," again he looked at her, " you're not mate material." He said while looking straight at her face.
Quincy's eyes grew big, not like the way this conversation was heading. "W-what a-are y-you s-saying?" She said, staggering.
Caleb lifted her face and gently brushed his thumb on her jaws and cheeks. "You're still young, twelve, maybe thirteen," he said, guessing her age.
"I'm twelve." She said, tilting her head towards his palm more. It feels good for this connection.
"Yes, twelve." He tucked the loose hair to her ear. "You don't know who I am. You don't know what kind of person I am." He removed his hand from her. "I love my freedom. I'm only 15, I want to enjoy my life the way I want it to be."
She tried to reach for his hand. "But I am your mate, right." He didn't let her touch him. "We are meant for each other, right?" Tears were now starting to build up in her eyes.
He put on a sad smile. "I know." He brushed his hair again, thinking of a gentle word to use so she wouldn't hurt. "But I can't see myself with you." This time he's the one who holds her hands. "I can't picture myself spending my life with you. That's why I'm sorry." He let go of her hand and stepped back, away from her.
She was confused, "Sorry for what?" she asked.
He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. When he opened his eyes, it was like he was a different person.
"I, CALEB LEEROY MOONBRIDGE, REJECT YOU, QUINCY JANE DARRISON AS MY MATE", he declared in his alpha voice.
A tear fell from her eyes. It felt like a rumble of thunder struck her heart, it ripped her inside, as he finished his rejection. "W-what?! W-why?" She lost strength for a minute, "C-can't you give me a chance to prove I can be a mate you want me to be?" She asked as tears continued to flow down her cheeks.
Caleb puts his hand on her shoulder. He didn't pay attention to what she said. "Quincy, accept the rejection", he said. He needed to finish this quickly, he told himself. He was thinking that if he stayed any longer with her, he might retract his rejection.
Quincy shakes her head, "No," she keeps shaking her head, "no, no. We are mates, we are supposed to be together." She held his hands that were on her shoulder. "We can work this out, Caleb, please give me a chance." A mate is a gift from the moon goddess. For a werewolf, finding a mate is a treasure that can never compare to anything.
This time it was Caleb who shook his head. "No," he removed his hand on her shoulder. "I don't want you to be my mate, so accept my rejection now."
Quincy begs him, "Caleb please," she cried, "please don't. I- I n-need you." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, "W-we need you." She said, referring to herself and her wolf when the time came.
"It's for your own good." He looked up in the sky. "If you accept the rejection now," he looked back at her, "you can choose your own partner in the future." He removed his hands on her shoulder. He turns his back on her, "and maybe we can both find love in the future." He shakes his head, "no," he looks at her again, "we can definitely find new love in the future. Without this bond."
"A-are you s-saying you," surprised, "c-can n-never l-like me e-even in the future?" She asked again. "Y-you can't see me as a l-love i-interest," she couldn't believe it, "and you bluntly telling me you will never be interested in me," mates are supposed to love you unconditionally, "even in the future."
"Yea, that's right," he turned around again.
Quincy brushed her tears on both her cheeks. "What if I don't?" She said. She doesn't want to give up yet.
Anger appeared on his face. Scared, she steps back. He grabbed her shoulder. She winces at the force of his hand on her shoulder.
"Hurts!" She said and she tried to loosen his grip on her shoulder.
"You will accept the rejection!" His voice echoed. Anger was evident on his face, "ACCEPT MY REJECTION!" and so in his voice. He released her.
She steps back. Afraid of him, his voice carries authority in it. Being an alpha's son, although he is not yet the alpha.
"Please don't do this!" She begged him. Losing the strength to even stand, she knelt down in front of him.
"NOW!" He shouts at her again.
She looks at him, in his eyes, "I-i-i," tears flowed down on her cheeks again, "Q-Quincy J-j-jane D-darrison," she stops.
He knelt down too and squeezed her shoulder again. "Go on!" His voice was very firm.
She shakes her head "a-a-accept y-your r-r-rejection". She stops again, hoping that he will not let her finish the sentence.
But she was wrong. "Say my name!" He ordered her.
With her closed eyes, she said his name, "Caleb Leeroy Moonbridge", she said in one breath. She felt her heart broken in two.
He removed his hands from her shoulder. "Good" he nodded, and she heard him say. He stands up and steps back away from her, putting a distance between them.
"You will not tell anyone about this," he ordered her. "No one will know about us being mates, do you understand?"
"Y-y-yes," she said. Tears continued to flow down her cheeks.
He looked at her one last time. And look around the lake as if at any moment someone will appear in front of them. When he is satisfied that no one is near them, he walks back towards the packhouse.
