Alex arrived at the lobby and saw the wild curls he had saw the first day, and he smiled before seeing her talking with the security who wasn't letting her up. She was probably on time, Alex was 3 minutes behind, so he walked in slowly. "She's an intern here." He spoke up when the guard said something about needing to see her bag and belongings before letting her go up. "She works with me. She's allowed in and out of this building... that's why she has the badge." He added as he pulled his own badge out. "If there is a problem, tell your boss and everyone else here that she has clearance."
"She's just not what her picture looks like." The security said and looked from not only was it the ID on the badge but the New York state ID she had handed over as well. The guy turned them over to Alex and he had to smile when he saw her with no curls, just thick straight hair. Face was the same, still shockingly stunning, with small freckles, blue eyes, full lips, and two dimples.
"She just has straighter hair. Face is the same. She gets up with no more issues." Alex added with a bit of power behind his words and the security nodded slowly and Alex took the IDs and handed them back to her. "Let's head up Lena." He held his arm out to her and she slid the items back into her purse before they were both in the elevator and he was hitting the right floor. "Have a good night?"
"Yeah, I got to go out and have a little fun at a club. What about you? Good date?" She asked wondering why he went to New Jersey on a Friday night.
"Yes, my mother and brothers were all amazing last night." He laughed lightly and started to look her over again. Her hair was down but he watched her gather it up and push it behind her so it didn't get in her face again. She was wearing jeans, tight high waisted jeans with a big blue sweater and simple black boots, still heels, but they seemed to keep the snow from sinking in.
"Not a date, just family dinner." She laughed lightly remembering what she had asked him. "You know... the whole table filled with food, my mother running around from each dish smacking our hands because she wants there to be enough for everyone." He added knowing that it happened every single time.
"Sounds like my family." She laughed again and thought about her dinner tomorrow night, how there would be more meat than vegetables and how her brothers would try and steal from her plate and complete chaos if her mother wasn't sitting at the table.
"Brothers and sisters?" He asked as the elevator opened and they started their short walk to the room they needed to for work. Her notes were still scattered. Since the floor was locked when they left, it was all still out and organized.
"Just older brothers. Only girl." She told him and he nodded slowly.
They got back to work. Redirects, observations, evidence and arguments the other side might make that he would have to be ready for. When it came time they stopped chatting, getting into the work, and then it was getting evident that she was starving since her stomach was growling loudly.
"If you want to go to lunch early you can. I will call the evidence locker and get the rest of the boxes sent over." He told her and she blushed beautifully. "I don't see a packed lunch, guess you would like to go out for it." He offered and she nibbled her lip at him and shrugged before he noticed that she wasn't really listening, but looking for something.
She moved to get to the notes again before she was looking for something in the boxes. She looked over the table again before going towards the second box she was sure was empty before he looked up at her and smiled softly. "We're missing something." She told him and he nodded before sighing slightly.
"Write down the number on the file, I will get in touch with the locker. That's the second one that is missing correct?" He asked and Lena nodded before going back to the file and then her notes to make sure that she got the right number down twice before writing it for the third, and then handing it over. "You know what, let's make sure we have it all before I have to call for a third time."
"Ok, do you want me to do it all?" She asked knowing that would probably be the easiest and the quickest.
"If you want. I am going to check my office to see if there is another box I might have missed." He stood and she got to the list and started to mark them with a small highlighter she got from her pencil pack. She had left it on the table and didn't notice how he stared at it and then her when he seemed to think about how it was a little childish that she actually carried something made for middle schoolers and high schoolers. She was checking things off, and it turned out that there were 5 things from the evidence haul they were missing.
He watched her put the high lighter back before putting it in the right place in her bag and he wondered if she was OCD. It would make sense with that, with the notes, and with her other organization.
He went to order the evidence numbers from the list, getting the idea that they were going to be more than an hour, he went back to her and saw her tapping her pen almost as fast as her leg was bouncing. "You can get lunch, I promise, it's not going to be a mark down. We're waiting, your notes are flawless, and it's pretty hard to ever get lost." He told her and she nodded before looking around. "I will even go to lunch." He told her to get her to agree.
"Ok." She moved to grab her purse, wrapping herself tight in her jacket and standing up. They had two and a half hours into work and maybe another hour when the evidence came. They both got into the elevator, riding down as he gave her a few options, he would treat her, getting what she wanted would be a good change up for him always going for the bad food too.
Until she asked for the place with the best tacos. She ordered for herself, put the cash on the the counter before he could shake his head and then moved right to the end of the counter for her change. She tossed it right into he tip jar without even counting it out and she looked around ready to find a seat.
He ordered for himself, getting it exactly how he wanted it was a big deal, otherwise his stomach and his eyes wouldn't want it. He was picky about his food like his new intern was about her organization.
He sat with her and she was checking over her phone before making a face before setting it down. "Problem?"
"Just one of my brothers." She waved it off and he laughed lightly.
"I probably had the same expression on my face when I got to my mothers last night." He thought back to the egg that was dropped on his shoes last night. If it wasn't for his mother he would have shoved another egg down his brother Hectors throat, and he told her that.
"My brothers used to do silly things like that in high school. I liked a boy in my freshman year, not only did they egg me, they egged him and he never talked to me again." She felt her face flame up when at the memory and she smiled this time when he laughed too.
"How many older brothers?" He asked her and she sighed.
"Well, Adrian is 34, Darius is 30, and then there are twins Damien and Eros who are both 28." She explained and she knew she was the last, happy to be the last. "Are you the oldest?"
"Yeah, me and 5 others. Dorian, who is about your age, Hector is after at 25, Mateo is 22, Lucas is going to be 21 soon, and Nikos is barely 17. Baby brother is still in high school." He told her and she nodded slowly.
"Your mom must have as much fun as my mom did. Too bad she didn't have a girl. My mom used to tell me I was gods gift." She laughed lightly and shook her head before looking back at her phone.
"I remember hearing her pray, wishing Nikos was a girl, they he came out a boy and she started to put her foot down harder with all of us." Alex remembered it well, less than 2 years after his baby brother was born they had chores, they had orders, they had expectations. He was 17 at time, almost out of the house, but it was quick work that she did with his brothers. The last year of his high school years he worked his ass off to make sure that his mother was less stressed.
"My dad is just glad there are boys to carry on the name... and the family business" She added that part knowing her father always told her she would never be the one that worked for him, that she was a blessing and going to do better than the rest of the girls on the block.
"He was glad. He loved taking us out and about the city. He died a couple years ago now so while we all miss him, my mother has started trying to make us all fathers now." Alex winced when he old too much of the truth, but that didn't seem to bother her.
"Sorry about your father." She told him softly, Lena couldn't even think about what it would be like to live in this world without her father, or her mother. Before she could say anything else their orders were up and he was up and getting them before he could even push his chair back. She set his in front of him before getting napkins and handing them out to him and herself before sitting down.
They dug in, he was getting sauce everywhere and she was trying not to laugh before she ended up dripping some on her jeans when she leaned back to take a good bite. She was wiping it when he heard him choke and she shot her eyes up to him and noticed how he was the one that actually laughed at her. Openly.
They ate, and she relaxed around him which was a good thing because Alex didn't like feeling like he couldn't be himself around someone because they were cautious and he didn't want to make them uncomfortable.
He ate, finished well before she did since he ate faster, and then he got to check his emails about the upcoming week. Glad to see that he had the message to say that the evidence was on it's way to his office, he made sure to not rush her. He told her about his brothers a bit more, and it was almost scary how alike her brothers were to his, but he chalked it up to being men around the same age as him adn his brothers, religion, growing up with strong parents... those kinds of things.
They were laughing as they walked back into the office, and that transitioned to an easy working environment until her alarm went off. "Sorry. I have an alarm set for when I have to head back to my apartment to get my things."
"Your things? Going somewhere?" He asked her wondering if she forgot to mention that she would be away.
"Sundays are my days with the family. I got tonight, church in the morning, lunch and early dinner before catching one of the last trains out of boston." She told him, rushing it out so he didn't think she was leaving town for no reason.
"Ah, is that why I never see you at church here?" He asked with a laugh.
"Yes. My father wanted to make sure that I was still a good girl and went every Sunday, no corruption." She laughed lightly and shook her head. "Another deal was visits on breaks since I didn't want to live in the dorms after the first year." She told him with an added laugh. He might not care, it might not be relevant, but he had to know that her father had a tight reign on her.
"When is the next week off? Easter?" He asked her and she nodded. "Probably won't be an issue with this case." He tapped the table and she nodded. "I am sure you need to get going. Boston isn't really a short ride." He told her and she nodded yet again before putting her jacket on and her bag over her shoulder. He was keeping her notes, and she took pictures of the notes she still wanted to review.
Lena walked out of the building and felt a little sad since she was having such a good time. She was learning a lot with the small questions that he went into deep details with so he knew that she would completely understand. She knew Alex was a good teacher, and she hoped he would keep that up.
She got to her place knowing she wouldn't see Angie today and grabbed her little weekend bag before heading to the train station.
She was on the four hour ride that night and got to the house she grew up in with no issues. As soon as she walked in she was talked over, talked about, teased, and it was like she was 15 again.
It was still good to see her mom and dad and hearing all the gossip before the next day at church. She was careful not to say anything about her internship, she didn't want to say anything until she was sure they would win the case.
Her dad's hard work and money were going to pay for this opportunity and she wanted it to be worth it to see her dad's face when's he told him she won her first case before she even graduated.
