Ray clutched Kristi tightly. She was hot and sweaty, and at first, he didn't know what to do. He cursed angrily, and then he took her out of the Diamond Club and drove back to his hotel with her. Once they were there, he laid her on his bed and called Keaton Gentry on the phone from the next room.
Kristi was delusional. She waved her arms about and called for Ben, her friend from the mental hospital. She dreamed that Ben was waving goodbye to her. She could tell that he wanted to grab her and tell her not to go.
When Ray returned to the bedroom, he heard Kristi calling out the name of another man. He frowned and said, "Damn, woman, I shouldn't be taking care of you. I should have let you die!" Ray was outraged, and any pity that he had felt for her disappeared instantly. He was so angry that he couldn't even look at her, and he stormed out of the room.
It wasn't long after that that Keaton Gentry arrived. After having received an emergency call from Ray, he had left the hospital as soon as he could and rushed over. Keaton pushed the door open, and when he saw Kristi lying on the bed, he was stunned. "It's you!" he gasped. Now he understood why Ray had been so frantic for him to rush over – and after her being in the asylum for two years, it was quite a surprise to him that Kristi was once more a part of Ray's life.
Keaton had a million questions running through his head, but he knew that they'd have to wait. Once he got over the shock of seeing Kristi and Ray together again, he hurried over to the bed to check Kristi's vitals.
Keaton's assessment took half an hour, and when he was done, he turned to Ray and said, "She has a high fever, and she is fatigued. I will set up an intravenous drip so that she doesn't get dehydrated. She may get better after a good sleep, but..."
Keaton stopped abruptly, and he suddenly looked confused.
Ray frowned, and his breathing slowed. "What is it?" he asked.
Keaton had just realized that Kristi had undergone a major operation, but he didn't know if he should tell Ray. He thought about it for a moment and decided not to. It was a private matter, and it wasn't his place to say anything.
After a long moment of silence, Ray looked at Keaton scornfully and said, "Are you a dumbass or a quack? If you can't speak, then you should f**k off!"
Keaton's mouth twitched, and he sighed helplessly, "I want to say, but it would be inappropriate. For her to get well, she must get some rest. When she is feeling better, you can ask her yourself, but don't be too hard on her. Sometimes it is better to leave the past in the past."
"Are you speaking to her?" Ray demanded in a tone that was cold and harsh.
Keaton was embarrassed, and he asked for mercy. "I will not talk about this any further," he said. "It is not my business. Anyway, I need to get back to the hospital!"
After Keaton left, Ray smoked several cigarettes, but he couldn't dispel the unpleasant feelings that he felt. Finally, he walked to the door of the bedroom. He put his hand on the doorknob, hesitated, and then decided not to go in and check on Kristi.
...
When Kristi opened her eyes again, it was already dark outside. She glanced around the room nervously. She didn't know where she was, and after a few moments, she began to feel a little panicked. There was a tingling pain on the back of her hand, and she noticed an IV drip. Did Ray set this up? – she wondered.
Kristi took a deep breath to calm her nerves, and then she pulled the needle out of her arm. She may not have known where she was, but one thing she did know was that she didn't want to be there.
Kristi hurried back to the Diamond Club, and at first, she thought the manager would punish her, but the manager just glanced at her curiously, and said gravely, "It's a good thing that you're back. A distinguished guest is waiting for you. Go to him! "
Kristi blinked unclearly, and when she saw the distinguished guest, her face turned red with shy embarrassment.
Miles walked over gracefully and said, "What's wrong? Don't you want to see me?"
"N-No ... Mr. B-Bradford," Kristi stammered. "I-It's n-not that. B-But after what happened last time... Ummm... is your recovery going well?"
"I'm okay," Miles replied.
"Then, that's good!" Kristi nodded dumbly. Just standing there, she felt inexplicably awkward. For a while, there was a silence between them that seemed to last forever.
Finally, Miles smiled and said, "I am very sorry about what happened that night, but I couldn't help myself."
Kristi raised her eyes in amazement. "What do you mean?" she wondered.
Miles nodded and said, "I thought that my performance was obvious enough."
Kristi looked at the floor and apologized. It was the only thing she could do after what had happened.
Miles: "It's okay. I know you are a very good woman. So, to make amends, would you be willing to accompany me tonight?"
Kristi's eyes widened as she prepared herself to resist his advances, but the warm look he gave her disarmed her quickly. "Don't get me wrong," he said. "I just want your company. I won't force you to do things that you don't like to do – and I will pay you."
Miles took a check from his pocket and put it in Kristi's hand and said, "I know you need money, so, since you are a PR girl, and I am your guest, I hope that you can accompany me tonight. You can call our date a transaction – what do you say?"
Kristi looked at the check-in her hand and was tempted by his offer. She thought it would take a long time to raise the amount of money that she needed, but the check would take care of half of her current expenses. Thus, it did not take her long to come to a decision.
Kristi smiled and said, "Alright, it's a date. Thank you for the invitation."
Miles offered his arm and said, "Well, now that that's settled, let's go."
