LYING on her front, Marion moved her right arm to fumble for the person next to her.
Her eyes shot open when she got nothing but an empty space. Gone was the warmth that could indicate that a person has laid there.
She felt her surroundings and heard no sound aside from the AC. She slowly shifted to sit on the bed.
She grimaced. The junction between her shoulder and neck hurts more than the injury she got the other day.
She touched the skin. Her finger grazed the laceration.
She heaved a sigh. Her attention went back to her surroundings.
The room is clean. Her clothes from last night were on the foot of the bed. The door to the bathroom is slightly ajar and she heard nothing from there that would indicate that someone is using it at the moment.
Her fingers combed her short hair in frustration.
She must be really tired last night that she was not able to wake up when Yulla was moving about to gather her things before she left.
She has been sleeping late because of a recent case. Four hours of sleep is already a luxury. Last night with Yulla was another story, too.
And the said woman is gone.
It was clear that the room has been vacated by the person who placed the reservation.
She flipped the blanket from her body. She stood up mindless of her state of undress.
The cool temperature of the room embraced her bare skin. However, she paid it no mind since her thoughts were on Yulla who left her without saying goodbye.
She showered quickly and put her clothes on from last night.
All of her things were intact. She was expecting a thing or two missings.
She made another glance before leaving the room. She checked her phone as she marched toward the elevator.
Her superior texted that she reports to him directly when she reached the office.
Not in a very good mood, she went to the car she came in last night.
According to the woman at the reception desk, Yulla checked out a couple of hours ago.
When Marion tried to call the number that Yulla gave, the number is already out of the coverage area.
The sergeant went to the office at nine in the morning in her uniform. She passed by the apartment to change. Nevertheless, her mood did not change either.
Casual s*x and one-night stands were not new to her. She has been single for so long that she has no time for relationships but it does not mean that she practiced abstinence.
However, this has never happened to her before. Often, she was the first one who would leave the place once the deed is done. She never stayed to talk about the weather nor the future. She also made sure that the woman would not expect anything. She never called or engage in the same s*x with the same woman. A repeat would change everything.
Yulla could be no different from the other women but Marion never slept with any woman after s*x. Last night was the first after a long time. The last woman she spent the whole night with is already behind bars.
Marion felt like a virgin damsel. She must admit that she did not expect that Yulla would bail on her.
“Looking good, sergeant.” A fellow police officer greeted her with a salute. “Congratulations to you and the team.”
“Thank you.”
Not wanting to stay for chitchat at her state of mind at the moment, she proceeds to the office of the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency.
She made a warning knock before entering the private office. Major Angel Alvarez raised his head for a moment before his attention went back to the document he was signing.
“Sir.”
She stood straight in front of his table and salutes at the superior rank officer.
He returned the gesture and motioned at her to sit. He finished signing the papers before closing the folder. He placed it on the upper corner of his table.
With a wide smile, the major focused his eyes on the tall woman.
“The chief sent his regards. In fact, as the person who heads this case, you’re given a few days of R&R.”
She stared at the chief in surprise.
She admits, it has been a very long few months. She did not even remember the last time she had an off of more than a couple of days.
“I would accept that, sir.”
“Take it. I remember, your mother is not from here.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Send me your comprehensive report then you’re off.”
Marion stood up. She saluted at her superior before leaving his office. This time, a wide smile was plastered on her lips.
Her thoughts were on Major Alvarez’ words.
He was right. Her mother is not a natural-born citizen of this country. She was a model sent for a photoshoot in Barcelona when she met Marion’s father, a small-time businessman that specialized in woodcrafts.
It was still a big question for Marion why her mother left everything behind. She has a promising career as a model but she chose to be with him.
Her old man has good looks. His mestizo features were very attractive. Her own mother is also a very gorgeous woman even to this day.
Her parents got married a year after they met.
Must have been love at first sight for both of them.
She and her father did not see each other eye-to-eye. He was a conservative Catholic and a very proud man.
He never liked his daughter very much since he learned that his only child swings the other way. The affection he gave his daughter was all gone when Marion told him that she is a lesbian.
Her own father called her an abomination.
She was eighteen when Zacarias Dela Vega kicked his daughter out of his house. It was the darkest time of Marion’s life. However, Sania Dela Vega came to her rescue.
Her mother left her husband for her only child. But it was Marion who told her mother to return to her husband. Though reluctant, Sania honored her daughter’s wish.
Despite living on her own, Sania supported her. Her mother was there when she passed the entrance exams for the police academy. Sania was there to lift her spirit when the training gets tough.
Her mother was there when she graduated as the top three of her class. Sania has the loudest clap when her daughter received her medals.
She was twenty-five when her father died of a heart attack. Since Marion was old enough to support herself, her mother decided to go back to America.
Every year, Sania would visit her in Barcelona. She would stay for at least a week. However, it stopped three years ago when Marion’s work became more demanding. Often, they would speak on the phone or if Sania find her home at night, they would facetime each other.
Perhaps, it is time to visit her mother’s home country.
Sania Dela Vega here I come, she thought as she turned on the computer on her desk. She has a very long report to make.
