Flabbergasted

IT was the humid temperature that greeted Marion when she exited the airport. She has to remove her jacket when it gets really hot. She had a long flight from Barcelona to the United States. She was glad that the flights were not delayed that the connecting trip she booked was not affected. “Marion!” A wide smile painted her lips when she heard the familiar voice. She turned her head. A woman in appeared to be in her fifties waved her hand. She has dark eyes and has darker skin than Marion’s. If she did let her hair grow longer, she would have the same curls. In longer strides, she marched toward the red truck. Sania climbed out of the car and enclosed her only child in her arms. “I miss you, mama.” She lifted her mother as she embraced the old woman tighter. She missed her mother’s scent, her affection, and embrace. Sania caressed her daughter’s cheeks when she was finally back on her feet. “And I miss you, too. I’m glad that you’re here.” “My superior gave me a few days off.” “Is that all you have?” Her mother pointed at the duffle bag on the ground. The black leather jacket was thrown beside it in her haste to hug her mother. “Yes.” “Let’s go. We’re still a long way from home.” “About a couple more hours, you say.” Her mother chuckled. Marion glanced at the man on the driver’s side. He was younger than her. He may be in his early twenties. His physical body shows that he loves the gym so much. He is packed with muscles. He saluted when their eyes met. He has this goofy smile on his lips. “You can sit on the back with Aunt Sania. I’m a chauffeur today.” “He’s your cousin, baby. His father is my first cousin on my father's side of the family.” “Nice to finally meet you, man. Marion.” She inserted her arm on the passenger side. “Yas.” When their hands parted, he saluted again. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Sergeant. Yes, she told me. Every thirty minutes in the two-hour drive from home.” Her mother’s laughter rang in her ears. It sounded very beautiful. “Get in.” Marion opened the backseat for her mother before she grabbed her bag from the ground. She placed it on the passenger seat before climbing beside her mother. “You’ll be meeting your cousins.” “I know. Who among them looks like me?” “No one has eyes as you do. You knew that you got that from your father. Most of your cousins were either darker than you just like my skin or they are much paler.” “Or tan. No woman is as tall as you, by the way.” Yas added as he maneuvered the truck away from the airport. “I guess, I got lucky to have inherited longer legs.” They made small talk as they journey to the place where her own mother grew up. This is the first time that Marion will step foot in her mother’s hometown. This is also the first time that she will meet her mother’s family. Often, when she come to America, she would meet her mother in the city and stay there for a couple of days. Her mother’s reasoning that time, they will spend half of their time on the road if they visit her town. She might be right. An hour on the road, they were driving on a concrete lane tunneled by the trees on both sides. She could almost picture herself running on this path. Another hour later, they entered a private property. The main entrance has no gate but there was an archway. She immediately noticed the CCTV camera though it was partially hidden in the vined plant placed at the columns. They steered through a clear ground. It was not concrete but free of grass. It must be the commonly used path by the people in this village. There was nothing to see in the long stretch of the area but trees until five minutes later. A vast ground the size of a football field appeared before her. A private chopper was perched in the middle. “The former beta is here.” She heard Yas. They passed by a platoon separated into two squads. Two women stood in front of them. “What is this place, mama?” It did not escape her eyes when her mother and her newly acquainted cousin glanced at each other. “Niña---” “I stopped being the family’s niña, mama. And don’t bother to sugarcoat your words.” She said in an almost hard tone. The car halted. They were parked in front of a semi-concrete house. There were two more trucks parked there. A black and a gray. Yas climbed out of the car. “I will explain later. Let’s meet the alpha.” She became more confused when she heard that. Her eyes followed her mother as she went out of the car. She did the same after a while. She grabbed her bag from the passenger seat. Holding the bag in one hand with the jacket in between the straps, she faced the house. She saw a CCTV camera in one corner of the structure. It oversees the parking area and anyone that would enter the threshold.  When they moved in, another camera was perched on the wall. It can see anything that comes in. Upon entering, there were three doors on the left side while the other side occupies the receiving area that is empty at the moment and a pantry separated by wooden columns. Marion heard laughter from the inside before the first door opens. A tall woman and a slightly taller man exited the door. Two children about four years old ran ahead. “Kids, stop running!” The tall woman hollered to the toddlers. “Don’t worry, hercegné.” Her eyes widen when a Mulatto man suddenly appears. He followed the children who were running in the direction of the ground. Their giggles were carried by air. “What the f**k is he?” “Be glad that my wife is not here to hear you said that.” Marion turned to the tall woman. She was stunned when she met her electric blue eyes. A smirk was painted on her lips. “You must be Sania’s daughter.” The woman added. “I’m Solana.” She clasped the woman’s hand. “Marion.” “It’s a pleasure to finally see you here, Marion. I’m Calhun Alexander.” She shook the man’s hand, too. He is taller than her by a couple of inches. “I can answer your questions if you have one, half-breed. It is becoming my forte to understand a confused being. I’m practicing for my kids.” The blue-eyed woman said with a smile. “What is this place?” “You are inside Omitaa pack. I used to be a beta in this pack until I finally accepted to become an alpha of another territory.” “A what? Alpha? Beta?” She glanced at the worried face of her mother. “Mama, what is this?” “Niña, do you still remember about the existence of the supernatural beings?” She laughed. “Those were from children’s books.” Solana snorted. “You got an unbeliever child, Sania. And yet, she was marked by one.” “This is all yours, Solana. I’ll be in the field with Keena. She has been pestering me in the mind link. That cousin of yours needs to get laid.” The only man in the group said with a chuckle. “Welcome to the territory, Marion. Don’t be a stranger.” “Marked? You meet your mate, Niña?” “Stop calling me niña, mama. Papa would create a ruckus in his grave if he heard you.” “Your father is dead. No one would judge you. I don’t care if you liked women, la niña.” “And I’m not little anymore, mama. I’m taller than you or half of the population in the world.” She complained. “She’s right, Sania.” “And none of you answer my question.” The blue-eye woman glanced at her mother before focusing her attention on her. “You are in a territory of werewolves. A werewolf is a human being that can shift into a large wolf at will. The man you saw who followed my children is a vampire.” Mouth ajar she stared at the absurd words coming from the other woman. “I’m not one of them. I’m different from the rest of the people in this place. I’m a crossbreed between a werewolf mother and a vampire father. I’m also called as the hybrid alpha of Metis pack.” Right after Solana said that her eyes turned red but its ring was in electric blue. In reflex, Marion pulled her mother behind her. “Don’t worry, half-breed. I used to be part of your mother’s pack. She is under my protection though I already have my own territory.” Her eyes returned to their original blue hues. A smirked was back on the so-called alpha. “I’m mated to a human woman before I turned her into a vampire. One of my children is a pure-blooded werewolf while the other is a part vampire, werewolf, and witch. They got most of their genes from their father. However, I’m glad that they both inherit my eyes.” “What the actual f**k…!” “You have a dirty mouth, Marion. You’re not allowed to do that in front of my kids or you’ll be hearing from my wife.” “Are you telling me that you can shift into a f*****g wolf, mama?” “Yes. And you didn’t get that gene from me.” “She’s right.”  Her hand shot in the air when she saw that Solana threw a blade towards her mother. She glared at the hybrid who snickered. A proud smile painted her lips. “But you got the characteristics of a werewolf. Just a non-shifting werewolf half-breed. Welcome to the Omitaa pack, Marion.” Her jaw clenched in irritation. Even when the younger woman turned her back on them. “One more thing, you are welcome to join my pack. I’m more interested in beings with mixed blood than pure ones. You’ll meet more interesting people if you’re with me. Calhun is a boring alpha. Adios, Dela Vega.” Her eyes followed the retreating figure of the woman. She is still dumbfounded by the load of information she acquired. She has not even taken a seat since she stepped foot in this place yet she was bombarded with such ridiculous information!
