chapter 3

I'd never given much thought to how I would die. But dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go. So I can't bring myself to regret the decision to leave home I would miss Phoenix. I'd miss the heat. I would miss my loving, erratic, harebrained mother. But they want to go on the road, so I'm gonna spend some time with my dad, and this will be a good thing. I think. In the state of Washington, under a near constant cover of clouds and rain, there's a small town named Forks. Population, 3, 120 people. This is where I'm moving. Where in Phoenix, the population is 1.5 millions of people. Which is where I'm gonna miss a lot. My dad's Charlie. He's the chief of police. Curse the powers that be cause all I want is freedom and to do what I want. And not have someone looking over my shoulders all the time. The couple hour flight was okay, I sat next to Bella and a window. I watched us take off and fly through the cloudy sky. Even saw where we was about to land when I saw that it was starting to rain. Great. I left where it was sunny all the time to where it rains all the time. What else could go wrong. When we landed, we went and got our bags and walked to where mom told Charlie to wait for us at. When we got there, I didn't see him at first but also I wasn't looking for him in his cop uniform either because that was what he was wearing when I finally saw him. "Dad!" We both called out. He turned to us and smiled. Nothing much has changed of him. He looked maybe a little older than the last time I had saw him. A little more gray in the hairs. But other than that, he looked good for his age. Mom on the other hand, she keeps herself looking young. I think she does it for Phil's sales since he's like in his early 30's and she's in her late 30's early 40's. I lost track of how old my mother is. She tries to stay hip and fresh. One day us 3 were out and about, someone thought our mother was our older sister. We all laughed and told them that she was our mother. Renee likes it like that. But then again like said she does it for Phil. Glad she has someone like him to keep her happy, fit, and feel young. They get along so well that I hardly see them fight or even argue. I think maybe once or twice that was it. But as well got to Charlie, he hugged us then took our bags. The same ole Charlie, hardly talks, doesn't hover a lot which is good but bad at times. I'm not saying he's a bad father, it hurts at times. "I see you guys changed your hairs?" He said as well got to the car. "Yeah, mom got our hair done last night. I wanted something different." I had said. "I see, it looks great, Kat. And Bells you hair looks longer than before." Bella looks down at her hair and huffs a little. "I've cut it since the last time. Its a little shorter." She says. "Oh, I guess it has been awhile since y'all been here." He says as we drove away. Two hours in the car, so little talk. When we did talk, it was about his job. Boring at times but it was great to hear how he was alone. As we finally got to the house, he parked in front and helped us carry our bags up to our rooms. Well the one room that Bella and I would be sharing. Like always. "Great one bed." I said as well got to the room. "Actually, I was thinking you take my room over." Charlie had said. "Huh, why?" I asked. "Well I don't always sleep in here. I always sleep on the couch, falling asleep to the TV. You can keep your things in Bella's room still." He told me. "Are you sure? I don't want to intrude or anything." "Yeah, I'm sure." He told me. I hugged him then went into the room. Expecting it to be messy since its a guys room but its actually clean. There some things in there that actually looks homey. There's a picture of him with Renee holding Bella. A picture of Bella and me in a playpen, playing with our toys. Pictures of us graduating kindergarten and every school year picture. It was great that he did keep track of us over the years. Like most fathers they wouldn't really care enough to do that. "I'll get you a desk and another computer for you if you want. I'll get whatever you want to feel comfortable in there." He had said. "Sure that's fine. If I need anything I'll let you know." I told him. "Just remember, one bathroom. So we all have to share." I nodded at him then went over to Bella's room. She was already unpacking her things. "I saved half the closet for you and a few drawers as well." She told me. "Thanks Bells." I told her as I went to put my clothes away. "You know, if you ever want to sleep in here, your always welcome." Bella has said as she sat on the bed. "Like old times, sure thanks." I told her. As I put my bags in the back of the closet, making sure I had everything where I wanted to be at, when I heard a few car doors close, then something talking. I went over to the window and saw Charlie talking to an older man in a wheelchair and a young teenage boy around my age. Bella came over to look as well then we headed downstairs to go check it out. As we came out the door, Charlie was handing the old man something in his hands. "Dad," we called out at the same time then laughed. "Bells, Kat you guys remember Billy and Jacob Black right?" Charlie asked. "Umm, should we?" I asked. "You may not, Kat. You were young when the last time we saw them. But Bella might." "Umm yeah, actually Jacob and I use to make mud pies when we were kids." "Wait, I remember that. You use to make me eat them." I had whined. "It took mom forever to get the mud out of my hair when we all came down to visit." Jacob and Bella started laughing. But me I wasn't laughing. It was cruel and harsh. My hair wasn't pretty anymore after awhile. It took so many washes to make my hair and head feel clean again. "So anyways, how do you like it Bella?" Charlie asked as he patted the truck. "What this?" "Yeah. Just bought it off Billy here." "Shut up, for real." Bella said excitedly. "What about me?" I asked. "Do you have your license?" He asked. "No not yet but I have my permit though. I know how to drive. I drove mom's and Phil's car all the time." I said. "Well maybe both of y'all can share it until I can get you a car." Charlie has said. As Billy and Charlie went inside the house Jacob and us stayed outside and admired the truck. It was an old truck but it will have to do for now. "Do you know how to drive a stick?" Jacob asked us. "Bella does, Phil's old truck was a stick me I never got learn before he got rid of it." I said. "Oh, its not that hard. Let's take some test runs." Jacob said as he opened the door for me. Bella and him got in on the other side. It was a little tight but it worked out. As he told me which was what in the gears and told me to double the clutch the start it up and put it into gear. We went around the block a few times, getting me use to the truck. I killed it a few times getting out of the drive but other than that, I was fine. Since Bella and I were going to be going to the school in town, I drove there to know how to get there. Bella said she remembered how get there a few times and plus we passed it up on the way home. "Do you want a ride to school sometime?" Bella asked. "No, actually I go to school on the reservation. You know the whole Indian tribe and stuff." Jacob said as I parked the truck and turned it off. "Oh, that sucks. It would been cool to know someone already at the school." Bella said. "Yeah, it would." I said as I got out. After we got out, we all went inside the house and heard our dads watching the game. When I went in there, I saw the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox were playing. "Who's winning?" I asked. "You watch baseball?" Jacob asked. "Heck yeah, I love sports." I said as excited. Our dads and Jacob laughed. "Well dang, something you all can talk together." Bella said as she went up the stairs. "What's up with her?" Jacob asked. "She's not into sports. She hated that me and Phil were always doing some kind of sports thing together. She thought that because he was a baseball player, he wouldn't want to do all that all the time but he did with me though. Her and mom done all the girly things, sorta. Actually no they didn't. That was also me. Bella's not really into anything I guess." I had said. "Don't let your sister hear you say that." Dad has said. "Do you mind getting me and Billy a couple of Rainiers?" I nodded then went into the fridge and got two cans of Rainiers than went back and handed them to Billy and Charlie. I went back into the kitchen and grabbed Jacob and me some coke and sat down and watched the game with the guys. It was great to be one of them. Not feeling left out, like I thought I would. I guess moving here after all is gonna be great.
