Chapter 3- Mate!
Elina POV
I awoke the morning of my birthday to loud bangs coming from the kitchen. There was no doubt that my mother was planning a large scale celebration, the likes of which would be fit for a royal ball. I slowly opened my eyes. I glance over to see a black dress hanging up on my wardrobe. My mother must have snuck it in my room while I slept. I hoped it would fit. I wanted to look perfect.
Today was the day. I didn’t really feel any different. I felt like me, only I noticed my senses were heightened. I could smell stronger. I jumped up out of bed. I moved so rapidly that I startled myself. I twisted and fell flat on my ass. I may move quicker but I was still just as clumsy.
Of course, my mother enters the room just in time to see her train wreck of a daughter bust it.
“I see 18 is treating you well already, my dear.” My mother stated with a slight smirk.
I hadn’t thought of that. The first steps I took as a new adult wolf and I eat it… awesome.
“Please try to get dressed and to your party without killing yourself. There are several important members from the surrounding packs. Please be on your best behavior. I want to make a good impression.” My mother stated as she exited my room.
As the largest pack in the United States, the Lunar Ridge pack did have a strong reputation to uphold. This made my thoughts of the sweet man I met yesterday even worse. He was so kind and smelled so good. The way I felt when he touched me… I just couldn’t get it out of mind. On the other hand, Luca was beautiful and part of my pack. If only he would give me a second thought….
I pulled myself back into reality… we have many allies but with the power came several enemies as well. We were always taught to be kind but aware when entertaining visitors. I had to keep my head in the game.
I spent the next few hours getting ready with Leah. I wasn’t sure where the guys were but I was happy to spend this time with just her. I was so nervous. I had knots in my stomach. Something felt off. I just didn’t know what.
Everything would be changing the next few days. Possible mates, Alex’s coronation and it was possible nothing would be different after tonight.
I had my long dark hair curled into loose waves. My black dress hugged each curve of my body like it was made for me. I wasn’t the kind of girl to doll up a lot of wear a ton of make-up. My mother however, believed it was appropriate tonight. The stylist did a simple golden eye shadow and some bronzer here and there. I stared at myself in the mirror. Damn! I actually look hot!
My internal conversation was interrupted by Leah.
“Damn girl! You look hot! Who knew you would clean up so well?”
I looked over at her. She too looked amazing. She wore a sage green dress that complimented her skin and strawberry hair perfectly.
“You don’t look so bad yourself!” I replied with a smile. “Our mates will definitely be missing out if they don’t find us tonight.”
Luca POV
I spent the day rushing around town. I think I went to every store possible to try to find a gift for Elina. I had gotten Alex something weeks ago, tickets to a football game. Easy. Elina on the other hand was tricky. I couldn’t think of anything that was good enough. Nothing that would express the feelings I have kept hidden for so long. What if she found her mate tonight? What if she found him and it wasn’t me? I don’t think I could handle it. I don’t think I could handle seeing her with another man.
I had to push all that aside and figure out what to get the most perfect woman I had ever seen. I was wandering aimlessly around the mall when I saw it. A white gold bracelet with a wolf howling at a diamond encrusted Crescent Moon. This was it. This was perfect.
Hopefully, she liked it. All I could do now is wait.
Elina POV
The time had finally come for me to make my way downstairs to my party. I could feel my wolf, Artemis, stirring in my head.
What is it Elina? I gently asked her.
He’s here. I can feel him. He’s here!! She uttered with pure excitement! I could feel the spark in her soul surging through my body. I felt the adrenaline course through my veins.
Who is? I asked confused.
Just as I made my way to the bottom stair, it hit me. The most amazing smell in the world. It smelled like the most amazing cologne I had ever inhaled. The scent washed over me and my whole body shivered.
I looked up into the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. They were green with a swirl of hazel and golden flakes.
We both whispered softly, “MATE!”
