Nothing could have prepared me for what he said.
‘You’re kidding right? Tell me you’re joking.’ I scoffed
‘You didn’t know.’ He said it more as a statement than a question.
‘You’re serious?’ His expression told me he was. I sat down on one of the chairs in front of his desk to prevent me from collapsing. The room was spinning, and I tried to make sense of the situation. The room suddenly became hot, and I felt suffocated.
‘I….I..can’t br…breath.’ I choked out as I grabbed my throat, trying to get some air.
‘Calm down, just breath. Stop panicking.’ Alpha Damien was beside me in a split second trying to calm me down, but it wasn’t working out.
‘Hot…hot….I can’t breath.’ My head was banging and I felt myself suddenly slipping out of consciousness.
‘Keep your eyes open. Layla….Layla.’ The last thing I heard was the doors bursting open and Alpha Damien screaming my name.

‘You can’t tell me you didn’t do anything to her. You were alone in the room with her, and next thing, she ends up unconscious. i should not have gone.’ I could make out the angry voice to be Natalia. She probably thought Alpha Damien did something to me. I could hear sobbing somewhere else in the room.
‘It’s okay baby, she’s going to be fine.’ Beta Jakes comforting voice meant that it was Mia who was sobbing. Pregnancy hormones were definitely getting to her.
‘What happened?’ I opened my eyes slowly only to shut them immediately. The light was too bright. Was I in a hospital?
‘Where am I?’ I opened my eyes again, gradually adjusting to the light.
‘Layla, thank goodness you’re alive.’ Beta Jakes said in relief. What? Why wouldn’t I be?
‘Mia, why are you crying? I’m fine right?’ I tried to sit up but my head had other plans as a crazy headache hit me.
‘You shouldn’t sit up yet. Let the pack doctor check you.’ Alpha Damien was by my side pinning me down, and to say I was surprised was and understatement. So he had a heart after all.
‘Okay.’ I didn’t bother to argue because of the pain in my head, but as I stared into Alpha Damien’s eyes, I saw something I hadn’t seen since I met him, care.
‘Hello Alpha.’ A short olive-skinned woman called the attention of everyone in the room.
‘Please examine her again. She tried to sit up but she fell back down. She also has a crazy headache. Is she okay?’ Alpha Damien sounded monotonous, but I could see the concern in his eyes. How did he know I had a headache?
‘He can feel it too. He’s your mate.’ As if reading my mind, Natalia spoke up for the first time since I woke up. She had been standing in a corner, observing.
‘Although you two are not yet mated officially, he can feel what you feel because he is the Alpha King. It’s not a strong bond, but it’s there.’ She successfully confused me more, but I was too tired to probe further. What had happened to me?
‘What do you remember?’ The doctor asked me.
‘Umm, Alpha Damien told me something that shocked me, and I wasn’t able to breath properly again.’ I explained, memories of what happened finally coming to me, but she didn’t look convinced by my explanation.
‘Are you sure that’s all?’ She asked me with uncertainty. I tried to remember if anything else happened earlier, but that was all.
‘I am, doctor. A while ago, Alpha Damien requested for me, and he told me something shocking. I guess I had a panic attack or something.’ Everyone in the room started to exchange glances and I was confused. They knew something I didn’t.
‘Guys, what’s going on?’ Mia came to my side and held my hand.
‘Layla, you have been out for seven days.’ My eyes widened in shock.
‘Seven days? I was knocked out for seven days?’ I asked to no one in particular, unable to believe what they were saying.
‘Relax Layla. Yes, you were out for seven days, but I think your brain is trying to process all the information you have received in the last few days. You need to rest, and not strain yourself. You are perfectly fine.’ The doctor smiled reassuringly but I was anything but reassured.
‘You are fine Layla. Doctor Marie is the best pack doctor, if she says you are fine, then you are fine.’ Natalia encouraged me and I relaxed a bit, but I couldn’t help but feel like the doctor was keeping something important from us.
‘I am going to have to ask you all to leave. She needs to rest for a few more hours while I observe her to be a hundred percent sure she is good to go.
‘Why can’t she come and rest in the pack house?’ Alpha Damien asked and I almost jumped in agreement, except I couldn’t.
‘Alpha, I need to monitor her for a while longer, then she can go home. By tonight, she would be good to go.’ The doctor smiled at Alpha Damien, but her smile made me uneasy.
‘Can Natalia and Mia stay? I don’t want to be alone.’ I tried to bargain, not wanting to be left alone with the strange doctor.
‘You need to rest Luna, so that you can be back on your feet in no time. Having people around will keep you active, and your body would not be able to rest.’ I accepted defeat and gave in. The others too gave in and said their goodbyes before they left, well, except Damien.
‘Luna’ The doctor faced me when she was sure we were alone.
‘Please, call me Layla.’ She smiled kindly, and I no longer felt as uneasy around her. Maybe I was just being paranoid.
‘Okay then, Layla’ She started.
‘I didn’t want to mention this with everyone around. I didn’t know if you would want them to know this or not.’ I was beginning to panic again.
‘Know what? What’s wrong with me?’ A part of me didn’t want to hear the answer to that question.
‘Nothing is wrong with you, but it seems like your brain is trying to recover something your body has forgotten.’ I was beyond confused.
‘I don’t understand.’ I sat up successfully, the headache was almost gone.
‘Your brain is trying to recover memories you have forgotten. That’s why you blacked out for so long, because it was too much for you to handle at once.’ I still didn’t understand what she was saying.
‘What I am trying to say is…..’ She hesitated before telling me. My anxiety was increasing fast.
‘Your memory was wiped.’
