‘Wow! This is hard to believe. Not only was I living with a witch, but she also wiped my memory? How frequently does she perform this ritual you speak of?’ I asked Doctor Marie, hoping she knew. She told me that my Aunt Jen took a part of my childhood memories, and that she performed a particular ritual from time to time to prevent me from regaining those memories.
‘I’d say about once a year, but she wasn’t able to perform the ritual this year. My guess is Alpha Damien got to you before she could. That’s why you passed out for so long, the memories are trying to resurface.’ It all made sense now. She did the ritual on my birthday every year since I turned five. That’s why she never let me go anywhere for my birthday, or celebrate with anyone.
‘I don’t think you should inform anyone just yet. Blood witches are very rare, believed to be extinct even. Those that are around are very careful to remain unseen, and they always have a mission. For your Aunt Jen to have turned herself in, she did it for a reason. I think she had been trying to protect you.’ What could she possibly be trying to protect me from? If all Doctor Marie said is true, then telling Damien or anyone can put Aunt Jen in danger.
‘You’re right, I can’t tell her. I must find out the truth first.’ Doctor Marie nodded in agreement.
‘I’ll call for Natalie and Mia to come get you, that you refused to stay, but you’re fine. You’ll have to see your aunt and get the answers you need, and the earlier, the better.’ I nodded in agreement, and she walked out of the hospital room.
The white walls and serenity of the room brought a feeling of familiarity, like I had been here before. I tried to remember, but I only got silver flashes of a woman screaming in a room like this.
‘Layla.’ I snapped out of the reverie.
‘Yes?’ I looked up and saw Natalie standing by my side.
‘Oh, you’re here already.’ I smiled and sat up.
‘Uhhh, yeah, and I’ve been calling you for the past five minutes, but you seemed to be in a trance. Are you sure you are okay?’ Natalie asked cautiously. I didn’t know I was no longer alone in the room.
‘I’m fine, Natalie, and bored as hell. Please get me out of this place.’ She laughed and helped me up to my feet. We thanked Doctor Marie and walked hand in hand to the pack house. The hospital wasn’t too far from the house, but she was afraid I’ll fall.
‘I have some business to attend to, but I’ll see you around, okay?’ Natalie asked me as soon as we got into the pack house.
‘Okay, I’ll go and rest.’ We parted ways and I made my way to my room. Many maids passed me with moving boxes as I was getting close to my room. The last thing I expected was for the boxes to contain my belongings.
‘Excuse me, what’s going on? Why are you moving my stuff?’ I asked one of the maids.
‘Alpha has instructed us to move your things into his room.’
‘What?? Why? Where is his room?’
‘Right this way ma’am.’ I was beyond furious as I followed behind the maid. How can he do such without my consent.
When we were close, I could spot his stoic frame giving out instructions on where they should put the things. Everyone stopped whatever they were doing once I entered and bowed in respect, also indirectly letting him know I entered the room.
‘You have two minutes to explain whatever the hell this is.’ He scoffed and turned to the maids.
‘Everyone out.’ They dropped everything and scurried out of the room.
‘Why are you always angry? You are like a little ball of fire.’ He scoffed and turned to face me. My folded arms and the frown on my face wasn’t doing anything to defend me.
‘Whatever.’ I rolled my eyes and motioned to the room.
‘So?’ He hesitated before speaking.
‘I want to keep an eye on you.’ Seriously? That was his big reason.
‘I am not a child Alpha Damien; I don’t need a babysitter. Plus, I have someone that attends to me personally, she can keep an eye on me. So, any other big excuse?’ He tried to come up with something else.
‘Whatever. I don’t need a reason to move my mate into my room with me.’ He moved me aside gently and was about to leave the room.
‘Oh and, its Damien to you.’ He left and closed the door, leaving me shocked. Did the big bad Alpha just grow a soft spot for me? I never thought I would see this side of him. It seems like my little accident has made him care a little for me. I didn’t have a reason in particular not to stay with him, not like he was going to let me leave his pack anytime soon, and if truly I was his ‘mate’, it meant I was stuck with him forever. I can either give in and make it easy, or fight and make life difficult for both of us. And I definitely do not like things being difficult. Remembering I had a request, I ran after him.
‘Alpha Damien, wait.’ He kept walking away. I was already out of breath, so I stopped. Then, I remembered what he said.
‘Damien.’ It was as if his feet were suddenly frozen stuck in place with the way he stopped. His back muscled tensed, and I wondered if I had made a mistake.
‘Yes, Layla?’ He turned to me and the tone in his voice made me gulp. His piercing grey eyes had darkened, and I felt a rush of excitement course through me. He suddenly looked a lot more attractive, the bulging muscles on his arms, the thick long veins that ran along his neck and the way his full lips pursed when he was concentrating intently on something.
‘You called me, mate.’ I gasped in surprise when I felt his hand circle my waist. I must have been staring so hard that I missed him when he moved towards me. His scent, which was a woodsy scent of musk and sandalwood with a hint of citrus overtook my senses. We were so close that I could feel his breath fanning my neck. I involuntarily tilted my neck to the side to give him more access, and I gasped in satisfaction when I felt his soft but firm lips on my neck. Why was I feeling so weird? I don’t like this man. That seemed to break me out of the moment, and I pushed him away.
‘Umm…ahemm’ I cleared my throat and composed myself.
‘I want to see Aunt Jen.’ I said straight to the point, trying to hide my arousal.
‘Hmm, I don’t want to keep you from your family, but I won’t hide the fact that I don’t trust her from you. We would see her together when you are done unpacking your stuff.’ I nodded in agreement and walked away quickly, wanting to scape the awkward situation but Damien had other plans as he grabbed my waist from behind and pulled me flush against his front.
‘Always remember.’ He whispered in my ears while nudging my neck with his nose.
‘I can smell you; you can’t hide anything from me.’ He suddenly let me go and walked away before I could make sense of what was going on. What did he mean he could smell me? Could he tell I was turned on? Is that a werewolf thing? I would have to ask Natalia what he meant, and why I was suddenly feeling so attracted to Damien, my so-called mate.
