Belle's POV
"You have a call, Jess!" I said to Jess, who was in the bathroom freshening up.
"Who is it?"
"Nick!" I replied
"Coming..." She said and rushed out.
"Hey, baby!" She said and then went into the closet.
Nick is Jess' boyfriend, they are so in love and I sometimes wonder how I can't get a man who would love me that much too.
It wasn't long before Jess came out, looking sad and tears formed in her eyes. I immediately got up and went to her.
"What is it, Jess? Did something happen?" I asked while guiding her to the bed, where I made her sit.
"Nick had an accident. He's in the hospital and a terrible state. His brother said they aren't sure he'll make it." Jess managed to explain before bursting into tears. I hugged and held her while patting her softly on the back.
"He'll be fine, Jess. He'll make it, I'm sure. He's a fighter." I comforted her.
"I have to go back, Belle, I need to be with him." She chimed in.
"I'm coming with you then. You'll need someone to look after you too." I said but she quickly faced me.
"No, I'll be fine, I can't let you come with me. I'll be busy and that will give Matt access to manipulate you again. I can't allow that. I'll be fine by myself." She insisted.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"I insist." She affirmed.
Jessica left very early the next morning, leaving her dad and me all alone in the penthouse. We were supposed to start our internship tomorrow but since Jesica was gone, I would be starting alone. My mom was so happy when I told her about it over the phone. She also believed the internship would help shape my experience which would be useful along the line in the future.
After I hung up, I called Jess for the umpteenth time to check up on her again. She's very emotional, especially with Nick. I can't even imagine how she must be feeling at the moment. It would be so horrible.
"I just got to the hospital, it's really bad, Belle," Jess replied in a shaky tone. I was heartbroken too but I tried to be strong for her. It would do more harm if I also gave in and started crying.
We agreed to talk later and I hung up. It was already late and I was hungry so I decided to get dinner. Just as I got to the door, my phone beeped a couple of times. It was some texts from an unknown number, thinking it was Matt disturbing again, I angrily opened the text and got my greatest shock.
It was pictures of Matt with random girls, frolicking and messing around. I couldn't understand the motive of the sender but it really helped me make up my mind. I'm finally going to break up with Matt and for good this time. I can't keep living like this, constantly getting my heart broken because of a man who doesn't respect me. Like Jess always says, he's not worth it and I deserve better.
Letting go wasn't as easy as it seemed in my head though. Matt is my first boyfriend and we've been together since I got into college two years ago. All the love experience I have, I got from him.
Looking at the pictures again, tears welled up in my eyes and I started crying. My whole life literally revolved around him, I loved him wholeheartedly. I was ready to bear with his excesses, and all I wanted from him was commitment and love, and he gave neither.
I didn't even know when I fell to the ground and started crying. I was there for about twenty minutes when I suddenly heard a familiar voice behind me. I looked back and it was Jeff, standing in my room at the door. He looked so handsome that I almost forgot about my heartbreak and jumped on him.
He was still wearing the suit from the morning when he was going to work and holding his briefcase. I could tell he was just back from work and going to his room when he must have heard my sobs. He asked me what the problem was and I didn't hesitate to explain everything and even showed him the pictures too.
"I know how you feel, it's not a pleasant feeling but you'll surely get over it." He said and then gently pulled me off the floor and led me to the bed, where he dabbed on my wet face with his handkerchief.
"You do?" I asked. I knew he was referring to his ex-wife cheating on him, Jess already mentioned it but I also wanted to hear it from him. I didn't want him to leave just yet. I want to be around him.
"Yes, I've been with two women my whole life and both cheated on me. I don't know why it keeps happening and I never got used to it. Both times were unbearable and I wanted to die but I didn't. I healed and I'm stronger now." He explained briefly but I got the whole gist.
"That's so sad. I can't believe someone would ever cheat on you. You're so loving and caring, any woman would be so lucky to have you." I said. It's so funny how I left my situation and was offering comfort when I actually needed it more.
"You need to tell that to yourself too. You're beautiful, intelligent, and loving. Any man would be the luckiest to have you." He said so sweetly and I couldn't help but focus on his lips as they moved nicely.
"Really? I wish he knew that too." I said sadly.
"Anyone who can disrespect you like this doesn't deserve any part of you and that's on them. Don't beat yourself up, dwelling on how you could have done things differently because it still wouldn't have mattered. People are who they are, and you can't blame yourself for how they turn out." He said firmly.
I felt like hugging him right there and before I dropped the thought, he pulled me into his arms. He must have been reading my thoughts, because how the h*ck was that possible?
"You'll be fine, Belle. You just need time to heal." He chimed in before finally releasing me. I didn't want it to end but there was nothing I could do. He smelled so nice too and his chest was so soft like feathers, I wish I could live there forever.
"Rest well Belle, goodnight." He said softly, grabbed his briefcase, and left, while I kept looking at his back till he was out of my sight.
Jeff was all the comfort I needed at the moment, he said all the right words. He was gentle and sweet and I found myself drawn to him even more.
I got up early the next morning and prepared for work. Jeff was surprised to see me all dressed up for my first day, he advised me to take some more days to heal but I refused politely.
"No, I can't. Staying alone and isolated will only make me worse, work is a better distraction." I explained and he also agreed and offered me a ride to work.
The drive to work was a short and silent one. We didn't say a word till he pulled into the building. I followed closely behind him as he hurried into his office. His staff greeted him as we walked in and he only responded with a wave.
While I was waiting to be assigned to my department, Jeff got a visitor. It was Sonia. I haven't met her in person before and I would be lying if I said she isn't beautiful.
Despite being forty, Sonia is drop-dead gorgeous. Jessica told me she was a retired model but she looked like she hadn't retired a day. I was still engrossed in her beauty when I noticed something off between the two. Jeff obviously wasn't pleased to see her.
"What are you doing here, Sonia?" He asked harshly while she chuckled.
"What else, obviously to see you." She replied casually and then took a seat. Jeff stopped what he was doing then, and faced her.
"I've told you severally, I don't want you lurking around me. Jessica isn't around so we have no business together. You're my ex and you have no such right!" He said harshly.
He stood up in anger but Sonia didn't seem to be bothered by his outburst. She stood up too and went to him but before she could touch him, he moved aside.
"Don't try it!" He said sternly after which he called the security.
"I want her out of here now and the next time she comes in here, consider yourself out of a job!" He said.
"How dare you, Jeff? I am still the mother of your only child, you have no right to treat me this way!" Sonia yelled disappointedly but Jeff just gave the security a very stern look and in a few seconds, Sonia was removed from the premises.
I never thought Jeff had this other side to him. He always comes off as a cool and calm person.
"Belle!" A familiar face walked up to me and exclaimed. It was Luke, looking all handsome and dazzling in his peng suit.
"Luke?" I exclaimed with a broad smile.
"What are you doing here? Wait you also work here?" I asked curiously.
"Of course, why else would I be here?" He replied.
"Wow, that's nice. I never knew." I chimed in while he chuckled.
"There are so many things you don't know about me, that's why I want to be friends with you." He let out.
"I know right, things like how you're Jessica's cousin which you conveniently forgot to mention." I countered him.
"It was intentional, I want our friendship to be natural and not forced because I'm your best friend's cousin." He explained.
