I jumped at the sudden words that broke the silence of the night. I scanned the forrest in search of who had spoken them. I noticed a tall dark shadowy figure slumped against a nearby pine tree. Moving through the moon lit darkness, the earthy smell of the woods warfed on the breeze. I could see the reflection of the moon glowing off of a dark leather jacket. It was none other than Alpha Dom, hisself.
"Alpha Dom," I say surprised. "I'm so sorry, I didn't realize anyone else was here."
How did I not sense my own alpha was standing not fifteen feet from me? Watching him emerge the complete darkness of the woods, it was hard to take my eyes off of him. I noticed he was starring at my still lit joint. Seeing that I move to put it out. He closed in the remaining space between us with three strides. Reaching my hand before I have snuffed my joint completely. Taking it in his masculine hands, it looked like a white burning toothpick. Looking back and forth between me and the joint, his eyes questioning me.
"Tell me," he asks taking a long drag. "Why are you by yourself at a pack party?"
I can't find the courage to meet his gaze. So I focus on his lips as he exhales the smoke.
"Well, sir," I start with my lame excuse. "I didn't want to ruin anyones night with my bad habits."
That earns me a low chuckle. He has an amazing smile, even in the barely lit atmosphere.
*Imagine if he kissed you.* Pearl says, causing heat to rise in my cheeks.
I couldn't even look at him. I notice out the corner of my eye, he had put out the joint and placed it in his back pocket. Okay, so I'm in trouble and haven't been in his presence more that ten minutes. Apparently I'm not getting that back. I take a cigarette out of my pack. I muster up the courage to reach my arm out, holding the cigarette pack. Offering him one. He raised an eyebrow in question.
"Would you care for one, Alpha?" I ask shaking the pack.
"Well, it is a special night after all," He replies with a voice that would bring me to my knees if I wasn't already sitting down. "Plus you're offering."
He removes a single cigarette from the pack and takes a long look at it.
"These thing aren't good for you," He says. "But I'm sure I don't have to tell the pack herbalist that, do I?"
Shocked by his statement, I just shake my head. He take my lighter gently from my hand and lights the cigarette before handing it back to me. We sit in silence taking a couple drags for our cigarettes for a minute or two before I hear footsteps approaching. Alpha Dom quickly puts his out upon hearing the steps in the darkness. I turn to look to see who it was. It was Scott carrying a glass in each hand.
"There you are." He said. I wasn't sure who he was talking to me or if he was taking to Dom. "I've been looking everywhere for you."
Upon reaching the table he notices I'm not alone. He looks at Dom with a smile on his face.
"Hey, Dom" he says. "I see you've met Paige."
Scott nods his head in my direction as he hands me one of the two drinks he was holding. Alpha Dom just nods. Looking back and forth between Scott and I. I take the cup from him and lift it to my lips. I can smell the sweetness of the coconut and the tanginess of orange. I take a deep drink from the glass allowing the tasty mixture to fill my mouth. Wow, Scott knows how to make a good drink.
"Better than champagne?" He asks, definitely fishing for a compliment.
"Yes," I say. "Much better. Thank you, It's mixed perfectly."
It wasn't a lie, it was actually very good. I down it in two minutes flat. Both of them starring at me, eyes wide.
"I guess I was thirstier than I originally thought." I say sheepishly.
Dom remains quite. He turns his attention back to the party. Scott just smiles as I set the glass down beside me.
"Well there is more where that came from." Scott tells me, looking down at the empty glass. All that had remained was the ice.
"Well, Ms. Tate." Alpha Dom says. "It was nice meeting you, but I believe there is a couple wolves getting too rowdy, if you would excuse me."
He begins walking away with out waiting for a response. As I watch him walk away, I feel Scott starring at me. He wait for me to take my last hit off my cigarette before saying anything.
"What was that about?" He asks still staring at me.
"What do you mean?" I ask tilting my head to the side.
"Oh," He says. "It's nothing, Never mind. Let's go get you another drink."
"Okay." I agree with him.
He gestures for me to take his hand and to even my surprise I oblige. I allow Scott to guide me back to our table at the party. Amber and Dylan were no longer sitting at the table. Again he pulls out my chair so I can sit down. I still feel as if I'm being watched, but instead of worrying about it I brush it off and sum it up to paranoia from the couple hit off the joint that Alpha Dom had taken over. Lost in my train of thought, I hadn't even noticed Scott had disappeared. I didn't notice until I see him return with another drink for me. This time I take it slow and sip on the cocktail for several minutes. Scott and I had sat in silent, until I finished my drink.
"Would you care for another?" He asks with a smile.
He's being very kind tonight. Not sure why, normally by this time he wouldn't had a girl on each arm and be making his way to his blue truck to head home. No doubt to get lucky with both girls.
"Sure," I reply. "Why not?"
He smiles approvingly, as he goes to leave. I watch him walk away in the direction of the open bar.
*Maybe he has changed* I say to Pearl who has been sitting back taking it all in.
*See,* she says. *I told you, you wouldn't know until you gave him a chance.*
Maybe I should listen to her more often. She's got a point. Until now, I have shut down every male who wasn't my mate. And I know it was frustrating for her because she has needs too. But what about my needs? I've protected my heart ever since that day Nathan left. We knew there was a chance one of us would find our mate but didn't think the day would ever come. And when it did, I was completely heartbroken. I can't just given anyone the key to my heart, knowing I may have a mate of my very our out there.
*Remember,* Pearl says. *Not asking him to mark you, we're just blowing off steam.*
I roll my eyes at her remark. Out of nowhere, I start feeling the effects of the alcohol. I don't remember being such a light weight. But then again it has been a while since I've drank. Thinking to my, I really can't remember the last time I had drinks.
"Here you go." Comes Scotts voice from directly behind me, causing me to jump. Dang I should've been paying more attention. He's really good at popping up out of nowhere.
"Thanks," I say taking a drink from the glass. "I really needed that."
"No problem." He replies, never taking his eyes off of me.
