Chapter Ten
The first light of dawn suffused the eastern sky as the group of storage warehouses came into view from Cherry’s autocar. It had taken the rest of the night to walk back to the vehicle on the outskirts of Oceanside and then return in it to the refuge. Cherry’s eyes ached with tiredness but she was determined to set out for Suddene as soon as possible. The android already had a head start on her of several days. Who knew what it had gotten up to already?
The autocar was approaching the warehouses from the east, the approaching sunrise behind it. The group of buildings sat on flat land at the side of the road, hulking and dark. Some of their occupants were already awake. Cherry could see figures passing along the paths that led to the latrines.
