Chapter 5: Angela

“You may leave Luna,” Jason informed me and I jumped off the examination table, not really realizing that I was still naked with only a bed sheet covering me. As I stood up, the sheet fell off, leaving me fully exposed. Jason and Emmett almost instantly turned around, which made me realize what had just happened. I quickly picked up the sheet and wrapped myself in it. Tightening it around me like a dress.  “Thank you, doctor,” I said out loud while taking a step forward, passing by them and heading out. Emmett followed me like a puppy, but I didn’t mind.  “That was an awesome fight, by the way,” he said once we were out of the hospital.  “Thank you. Your skills are good as well, but you are too confident and you depend mostly on your brutal strength,” I told him. He was not bad himself. Emmett just needed a little change in his fighting skills and he could be the most ferocious fighter if he wanted.  I felt a strange tension between us, which made me wonder if I should apologize for him being attacked for the second time, not even within twenty-four hours. But something inside told me he wouldn’t appreciate that.  As we were walking towards the pack house, I noticed someone was standing there, anxiously looking around. It had to be a child or a woman. Her figure was small. Too small for a warrior. We were too far for me to recognize who it was, but I guess Emmett’s hair betrayed us because the moment her head turned in our direction; she squeaked loudly and ran straight towards us.  “Nice to meet you, Lili. I am Angela, but you can call me Angie,” she blurted out, almost without breathing. When I remembered the deep wound she had just half an hour ago and the blood dripping from her shoulder on the way from the training ground, it was amazing how energetic she was.  “Hi,” was all I could say before she grabbed me and pulled me into a hug.  “I am so happy to finally have a sister.” She was so over the moon and it was the first time we officially met and talked. I tried to pull her away, further from me, but she was holding me tight. I couldn’t understand how such a small body could hold so much power.  “Angie, I think you are choking her,” Emmett suddenly said, and Angela almost instantly let go of me.  “I am sorry. Sometimes I forget about my strength,” she apologized right away, scanning me from head to toe, checking if I was alright.  “Angie inherited the strength of her father. She is even stronger than our Alpha,” Emmett said jokingly, but hearing that something like this was possible made me curious. This little girl, who was over half of a head shorter than me, and I wasn’t that tall to begin with, was way stronger than the Alpha of the pack? She had to have really strong Alpha genes, which meant as a she-wolf she was extremely precious.  “Really?” I asked unbelievably, but if a pack member said something like that, there was really no real reason to doubt it. I suddenly understood why Adrian was so protective of her and brought her to the infirmary right away. Not only was she his little sister, but she was also a treasure which they needed to protect. I made a mental note to ask Emmett what happened to their parents later. If they knew she was injured, they should have been in the infirmary earlier as well but except for Adrian, who took her there, no one else came, which was strange.  “We should probably head back to the pack house. If my brother sees someone looking at her like this, he might get crazy again,” Angie said with a gentle smile on her lips. She said it so freely, like these angry outbursts of her brother were normal.  “You’re probably right. He almost killed me just a moment ago,” Emmett said, and his hand instinctively shot to his neck. In the infirmary, I noticed his neck was darker than the rest of his skin but as we healed faster than humans, it became normal pretty soon. I guess the feeling of those hands around his neck was still present.  I didn’t fight with them. Angela took my hand and pulled me with her as she headed back to the pack house. To my surprise, her room was right beside mine. She took some sort of cream from her room before we went to mine. Emmett left us in the hallway and went to do something else.  “You don’t need to be so nice to me. Your brother is not interested in me anyway,” I told her as soon as she closed the door and he left us alone in my room.  “He is a jerk. My brother doesn’t know how to care about a woman. He doesn’t even know how to care about me,” she said while taking away the sheet that covered me.  “Lift your hand,” she instructed me, and I obliged.  “What is that?” I asked as her fingers touched the same place where I was injured. In a circular motion, she applied the cold cream. The skin was healing, but the muscle inside was still sore from the injury, reopening the injury and fast healing. As she was gently massaging the cream inside, the pain and sore feeling dissipated. Soon I felt like I was completely new.  “You waited too long before you went back to see the doctor, so I assumed he was reopening the wound so it would not leave a scar. You are precisely as I thought you would be,” she said while straightening her back and standing firmly in front of me, still keeping her soft smile. At first I thought she would be too spoiled, especially after I saw how her brother treated her, but now that she stood in front of me, she was definitely mature. Maybe not by her size and with her body, but her mind was mature enough to understand people around her right after she saw them.  The girl I saw laying down on the ground with a bleeding shoulder was cute and gentle. The one sitting inside that examination room was strong and tough but at the same time still with a soft smile on her lips and gentle eyes. The person who stood in front of me was someone else. Some she probably kept hidden well enough so others would not see it. “Why do you keep acting like a sweet and spoiled girl in front of everyone? The way you hugged me and introduced yourself also makes you look dumb,” I said without filtering. The person who stood in front of me right now was the real person behind those staring eyes. She still had a soft smile on her lips, but I realized that was just a habit. Something to show. Something meant for the people living around her.  “Because that’s the only way I can keep my position. Emmett said that correctly. I am stronger than my brother, which I guess gave you the picture of my life in this pack. If I am tough and show my real strength, it would mean I am challenging the Alpha. Adrian is my brother, so I need to protect this pack from internal fights,” she answered.  I looked for some clothes which I could put on while she sat on my bed and followed my movements.  “So you are playing dumb and pretend to be childish so those who would be worried about you simply assume that you are not suitable for an Alpha position?” I summarized her words the way I understood them.  “Exactly,” she said. I put on a hoodie and sweatpants before I turned back to her. Her eyes seemed distant and full of pain. I didn’t plan to ask her further and simply waited until she talked again.  “I am not sure whether someone already told you about my family and my pack, but my parents died several years ago. Adrian had to become Alpha when he was just fifteen. Our uncle, beta Maverick Blacksword, Emmett’s father, led the pack until my brother was old enough to take the position. I was just a child back then so I don’t really remember what happened, but I guess my brother made some pretty dumb decisions and since then there are always people opposing him. From the day he became Alpha, his entire life has been a big fight, defending his position in this pack.” As she kept talking, I slowly understood the reason behind his tough behavior and strange acts. He simply couldn’t afford any weakness. Maybe he didn’t want a mate for that reason or maybe he wanted a mate, but at the same time, he couldn’t let others see that he cared for her. He couldn’t let them see he was weak.
