Leia's charge was fierce and resolute. Adrian’s wolf was almost double our size, but she didn’t care. I always admired her bravery and no matter what was ahead of us, she always had my full support. My heart ached at what was going to happen, but I couldn’t let this so-called mate hurt someone from the pack despite the fact I had only been here a few hours. I was Luna of this pack and I was supposed to protect them no matter what.
“Luna. Stop. Please.” I heard someone’s voice calling to us. With my peripheral vision I saw Emmett, who was trying to get back on his feet but struggling. After that everything happened too quickly. Leia charged into the huge wolf in front of us. I felt a sharp pain in my side as teeth pierced our skin. Leia managed to get out of his grip, but not for long. I already knew that we couldn’t win this fight. It was understandable. Standing against an Alpha for this long was already more than enough and at least this way he would vent his anger on me and not on his own people.
Just as I was preparing to receive the last hit, a smaller brown wolf stood right in front of me and a loud painful howl echoed through the training ground. Adrian released his grip on the smaller wolf and quickly shifted back into his human form which left him completely naked.
“Why?” he asked before he leaned closer to the wolf. The small brown wolf shifted into a young, tiny and extremely beautiful girl. She was terribly injured on her shoulder from the bite. Blood poured onto the dirt, but she didn’t shed even a single tear. I watched as Adrian gently lifted her up into his arms and ran in the direction of the infirmary quickly. No one had paid attention to me or to my injury, or at least so I thought.
When he was gone, Emmett came closer to me. I growled at him, hoping that he would keep distance from me but he only shook his head and took one more step closer to me. He scanned my injury briefly, but I could see the pain on his face that he was trying to bear himself. I had millions of questions on my mind. Who was that girl who jumped in between us? Why did she do that? Was she my mate’s lover? Was I the third wheel here? I didn’t understand anything.
“You need to clean the wound otherwise it will leave a scar after healing,” he said once he was done checking my wound. At that moment I didn’t care about the scar at all. I didn’t feel the pain on my side. I didn’t register the burning pain on the several scratches. All those were just minor injuries, but for some reason my heart hurt. The stabbing pain was almost unbearable. I didn’t know what hurt me more. The fact that my own mate didn’t hesitate to fight with me and even hurt me or the fact that he cared about someone else more than he actually cared about me? Was I really that unimportant?
I slightly nodded my head to Emmett and he turned around and led me to the infirmary. I refused to shift for now. Not because I was afraid that someone would see me naked, but I didn’t want anyone to see my tears. Adrian wasn’t a person who deserved my tears.
I was afraid to go to the infirmary, especially since I knew Adrian would be there with the girl who got injured during our fight, but what I saw when we arrived tore my heart apart even more. He was so anxious when the doctor was checking her wound and cleaning it. He didn’t stop apologizing to her.
While watching her I started to admire her. The wound on her shoulder was definitely deep but she held on bravely, without hissing in pain when the doctor touched it with healing emulsion which sped up the process of healing our wounds.
Emmett joined them but I stood at the entrance unable to take one more step to enter. I told myself to stay away and wait until they left. To my surprise when Emmett joined them Adrian’s anger had already dissipated, most likely from the injury he caused to that girl. I was burning with questions I couldn’t ask.
“Are you alright?” Adrian asked him.
“Nah. It’s nothing. I am fine,” Emmett said with a smile on his lips. He turned to look at me, but when I saw Adrian following his gaze as well I hid myself around the corner quickly. Emmett didn’t give up when I was there. I wanted to wait until they left but the conversation they had pushed me to leave the infirmary and wait outside. I hid myself behind the building just in case Adrian saw me when he left. I wasn’t even really sure why I was hiding in the first place.
It took around thirty minutes before I heard Adrian’s voice as he was talking to the girl. My wound had already started to heal so I knew I didn’t have much time before I would scar. Not that I cared about that. When their voices were finally far enough, I emerged from the shadows and went into the infirmary. Emmett was standing with the doctor, talking about something and as soon as he saw me he quickly opened the door to the examination room.
“That’s her Jason,” Emmett said, which confused me a little. Was he talking about me while I was gone?
“Please jump up Luna,” the doctor said and with a few strides I came closer to them and jumped onto the examination table still in my wolf form. The doctor placed a white sheet over my body and I understood that he wanted me to shift. At least he had the decency to cover me. Maybe this pack really had some good people who were worthy of protection.
I shifted right away without Jason encouraging me. I noticed that he had some gray hair mixed with his dark brown hair, but what caught my attention was his eyes. I could clearly see that his irises were dark blue, but at the edges there were green rings. Very unique eyes.
“Where were you injured?” he asked as soon as I shifted. I moved the sheet to uncover the side where Adrian had bitten me. The wound was almost healed. I could feel the dried blood sticking to my skin and the pain was already almost gone.
“I will need to reopen the wound a bit unless you are okay with a scar, Luna,” Jason said and for a moment I was really considering whether I should do it or not but then I realized that if I kept the scar and later Adrian became normal, he might accuse me of keeping the scar to remind him of this incident.
“It’s okay. Do what you must, doctor,” I replied, already prepared for the new dose of pain awaiting me in the next few minutes. The doctor took the scalpel and with three swift movements he reopened my almost healed tooth imprint. I could feel the fresh blood pouring from the wounds once again. It hurt. It hurt like hell and burned at the same time, but Leia helped me to bear the pain. I couldn’t lose to that girl. She could be the same age, maybe a bit younger yet she didn’t shed a single tear while being treated. If nothing I had to be at least as strong as she was no matter who she was.
The doctor cleaned the wound before he applied the same healing emulsion. I never realized that the emulsion burned deep inside the wound, it was even more painful than the original injury.
“Who was that girl?” I asked out loud, trying to distract myself from the burning pain.
“The Alpha’s little sister,” Emmett answered almost instantly. His answer made me feel a bit guilty. She either jumped in between us because of her brother or to protect me. Either way, my own fight with the Alpha and his hate for me brought pain to his sister. I was wondering if she would be able to get close to me or not.
“Why did she jump in between us?” I wanted to know.
“If I were to guess, it's probably because of you. She is the only one who can put up with our Alpha and the only one who can actually convince him to do anything. Our Alpha is very bull-headed and stubborn on top of that. The only one he ever listens to is Angela,” Jason was explaining slowly while observing the healing process of my wound and reapplying the emulsion when a certain part closed.
“But why would she do something so dangerous for a stranger?” I couldn’t understand her decision.
“You are our Alpha’s mate which technically makes you her sister in law. Our Alpha will not hesitate to hurt you if you give him the chance, but we all know he would be blaming himself and regretting it later. So you could actually say that Angela did that to protect the relationship between you two.” This time it was Emmett talking, but I saw Jason slightly nodding his head in agreement.
“I’m not sure there will ever be any relationship with how much the Alpha hates me,” I said firmly, making sure not a single drop of sadness appeared in my voice.
