Chapter 4 Matthew let Douglas lead him into the room. They sat down on the bed nearest the wall with the window. Matthew sat on the pillow and rested his arms on his knees so that Douglas had enough room to sit down with him. When they were both comfortable, Douglas began to explain. “I probably dunno very much,” he said, “but since ya new here I suppose ya’d reckon anything I’ve got to say was interesting. Don’t think any of it’s gonna help ya, though. None of us wanna be here. Every now and again someone tries to find a way out.” A puzzled look settled on Matthew’s face. “You make it sound like we’re prisoners.” Douglas shook his head and looked Matthew directly in the eye.
