Chapter 3 The Master was waiting for them in the Great Hall. He was sitting at the head of one of the tables in a high-backed chair that had not been there earlier, with his booted feet up on the scarred and battered tabletop. While Matthew couldn’t take his eyes off the man, the Master seemed completely underwhelmed at their arrival. He glanced up at them and then made a great show of studying his fingernails. “Matthew, Sir,” said Kell. They came to a stop not more than a metre or so from the Master and for a long while they stood in silence, waiting to be acknowledged. It was of no great concern to Matthew. He used the time to inspect the man who was in charge; a man whose solid muscular form both appealed and repelled. His body, while physically much the same as Kell’s, was hairy.
