Chapter 7: First mission (2)

1061 Words
Nathaniel woke earlier than usual. Just like what Mr. Lowell had told him, he didn't bring anything with him because they will be the one to supply his gears. And it is not like he has something to bring with him that will be of help on his mission. Naomi slept in her son's apartment because they had arrived too late from their night bonding. Nathaniel stared at his mother for a few seconds and kissed her forehead. "Take care of yourself, mom. Love you." Nathaniel whispered as he walked to the door and went out. After the sound of the door closing, Naomi opened her eyes and sat up. She stared at the door where her son just disappeared with worried eyes. "You too, son." Naomi whispered, even though Nathaniel was long gone. She didn't realize that a tear had already rolled down her cheek. She wiped the tears confused as to why she suddenly felt sad and why her heart was clenching in her chest. Nathaniel arrived at the warehouse and saw his seniors all geared up already. He was the only one who was still not prepared. His seniors looked down at him and scolded for being so late but the truth was that he wasn't late at all. Mr. Lowell never gave a specific time on when they will depart. He looked around unsure of what to do. And Mr. Lowell just appeared at the right time. He walked over to Nathaniel and led him to where the gears were located. "You can just pick whatever you want to bring with you, there is no limit to how many weapons you will bring, but make sure that you will be able to carry it." Mr. Lowell said and moved to the side so Nathaniel could have a better look at the weapons displayed in a table with a cotton cloth. Nathaniel swiped the weapons with his gaze and stopped in front of an ordinary looking dagger. Mr. Lowell observed him like he had always done. He saw how Nathaniel just went past the good weapons and stopped in front of an ordinary dagger. Mr. Lowell fixed his glasses and frowned. He remembered his report to President Martin. After Nathaniel had left the underground base yesterday. He didn't have any time and immediately approached the high tech graphics floating above the table. He went to the recent history, bin, documents and maps but couldn't find a trace of what Nathaniel had done. The system would normally leave a lot of records of the things you have done using the system itself, however, it seemed like Nathaniel was an exemption because no matter how hard Mr. Lowell tried to find the traces which Nathaniel should have left he couldn't find anything. It was like he never touched it at all. Mr. Lowell could feel beads of sweat rolling down his forehead as well as his back. He immediately grabbed his things and left the warehouse to report to his direct boss. "Mr. President, I know I shouldn't be asking this when I am the one who dug up Nathaniel's background, but did he really drop out of college?" Mr. Lowell asked President Martin. President Martin looked at him as if he was spouting nonsense. "Of course, I am sure. I had him followed for a few weeks after you reported his background to me." President Martin said. Although it sounded like an insult on Mr. Lowell's side and he felt like his boss didn't trust enough , he knew deep inside him that President Martin was just being extra careful. "Why did you ask?" President Martin asked. "He was able to operate the system without leaving any traces, sir." Mr. Lowell said, which made President Martin stunned for a second but regained his composure almost in an instant. "He operated the system you say? How? I'm sure that this is his first time seeing the system!" President Martin looked at his secretary, his eyes were looking for an answer to his question. "I also have no idea, sir. I have checked the system three times and saw no traces of him using it even though he was right in front of me when he operated it." Mr. Lowell also wanted to know the answer to President Martin's question. President Martin hummed as he pinched his chin as if he was in deep thought. He thought that there is no way Nathaniel will be able to operate the system they got from the highest tier crypt that they raided but he also trusts his secretary's words. "How was he able to operate something he shouldn't be able to operate and he used the system without even leaving any traces? That 'system?'" President Martin mumbled to himself. Mr. Lowell suddenly thought of a possibility why Nathaniel was able to operate and not to mention not leave any traces of him using it, the black token. "Sir, was it perhaps because of the black token? Did the system reacted to that legendary token?" Mr. Lowell asked President Martin, which made his boss's face lit up as if he was sort of enlightened. "Of course! The black token! Nathaniel has the black token." President Martin became so excited at the thought of the black token becoming his while Mr. Lowell stared at him uncomfortably. Mr. Lowell could feel that President Martin has changed ever since that day when he ordered him to make Nathaniel into a commissioner. When Mr. Lowell heard from President Martin that Nathaniel had the half piece of the black token he became curious as to how the president found out. His curiosity then turned into suspicions when President Martin started changing. Mr. Lowell often sees him talking in his office even though he was alone and President Martin kept mentioning the black token and every time he did he always had a peculiar smile that Mr. Lowell had never seen him wear before. "Sir, are you okay?" Mr. Lowell snapped out of his thoughts when Nathaniel called him. He looked at Nathaniel first before switching his gaze on the dagger in his hand. 'This might be my only chance to confirm it.' Mr. Lowell thought. He looked at Nathaniel's clothes with a frown in his face. "Commissioner Nathan, are you perhaps carrying any other items except for the dagger?"
