Chapter 4: The weakest commissioner (3)

1116 Words
Mr. Lowell smiled underneath his serious expression. He was glad that Nathaniel accepted his offer and that President Martin will finally get his hands on the half of the black token. Truth to be told, Mr. Lowell also wanted to see what the black token looked like. He remembered President Martin saying that Nathaniel always carries the half piece of the black token. Mr. Lowell pretended to fix his glasses as he observed Nathaniel, he was trying to assess where Nathaniel could have hidden the half piece of the black token in his body, but had no idea where Nathaniel could have possibly put it. "Well, now that you have accepted your first mission. I will need to guide you into being a decent commissioner. Follow me." Mr. Lowell went inside of the warehouse and Nathaniel followed him closely from behind. 'Why are we heading inside the warehouse?' Nathaniel thought. He was rather confused about why Mr. Lowell was going inside instead of going somewhere else. Nathaniel has been working in this warehouse for years and there was nothing but a bunch of weapons that either came from a crypt or were made by a blacksmith. However, he didn't know everything about his workplace and it is about time he knew. Mr. Lowell walked toward the small office that the team captain was using. Nathaniel could feel the gazes of his seniors at him but he ignored them. Mr. Lowell had successfully entered the small office and Nathaniel was about to follow him, however, the team captain stopped him. His team captain blocked the door with his gorilla-like arms. "What are you doing?" Ark, his team captain asked. Nathaniel stared at his team captain for a few seconds before answering, but Mr. Lowell was faster than him. "Let him in. He needs to go to the base." Mr. Lowell was pressing some buttons in the lock of the vault, which had nothing inside. Ark looked at Mr. Lowell's back before staring at Nathaniel and letting him pass. However, Nathaniel didn't walk. A secret door appeared on the floor. The floor split into two and a staircase appeared. Mr. Lowell went inside and told Nathaniel to follow him once more. "So, you became a commissioner. You know that you will die sooner rather than later." Ark said. Nathaniel turned around and followed Mr. Lowell down to the base that they were talking about. But before he could completely go down, he spoke. "I know, that's why I thought I will make my mom live an easy life if I'm just going to die." The secret door closed, the split floor moved and became one again. Ark stared a little longer to the floor where the secret door was located before going back to his work. Nathaniel's team captain, Ark, was the strongest in the team, that was also the reason why he was appointed as a team captain. Ark was a sensible man before he was recruited as a commissioner by Mr. Lowell at least six months ago. He was the only person in the team who didn't seek for money and wasn't greedy for it. But most of all, he was like a father and a brother to Nathaniel. He was the only one of Nathaniel's seniors who didn't bully him. Nathaniel understood what Ark meant when he said that he will die earlier, however, whatever Ark have said nor what he was to say, Nathaniel already made up his mind. Nathaniel quietly looked around the underground base Mr. Lowell and he went into. It was five meters deep underground and was as wide as the warehouse aboveground, no, it was much wider. The base was full of armor that looked like it came out of a medieval novel and weapons. Nathaniel thought that those weapons were more valuable than the ones they kept packing on the surface. Mr. Lowell stood in front of a long table and picked up a document before handing it to Nathaniel. He tapped the table thrice and it lit up. Several high tech graphic images floated above the table. "Read the document carefully first before we move on to the other specific details. Inside the document is the general description of your first mission." Mr. Lowell nodded at the document in Nathaniel's hands as he spoke. Nathaniel switched his gaze from the high tech graphics to the document on his hand. The first thing he saw was his name and title of the mission. His brows raised after reading the title. "Man-ster Hunting." Nathaniel read the title out loud, his confusion could be heard from his voice. Mr. Lowell noticed this and started explaining. "Yes. Man-ster Hunting, just like how the title stated you will be hunting a monster in human flesh. The monster originally came out of a crypt after the crypt had been undiscovered for a whole week. You don't have to worry about its appearance, we have already confirmed that it is a monster hiding beneath human skin." Nathaniel didn't answer, instead, he continued reading the document. It took him a few minutes before he finished. He closed the file and looked at the floating windows. "Then, to the specific details. The mission will take place at Governors Island. And as what you have read in the document, there is only one monster, but it is undeniably and most certainly strong. I'm sure that you are thinking of how we will defeat a monster like it while not causing a scene to catch the government's eyes since the government wasn't permitting civilians to enter a crypt. However, President Carlton has an indefinite right in handling the crypts. This is a top secret information, so I believe you won't open your mouth about it to others." Mr. Lowell stated. "Yes." Although Mr. Lowell didn't ask a question Nathaniel still answered and that is because Mr. Lowell was looking for a confirmation. "Tomorrow we will depart at dawn, so make sure that you are here before that time. And you don't have to worry about your gear, we will provide it for you. Also, we will be joining the military in disguise as a special task force, the reason is as I have mentioned earlier. Any questions?" "I have two. The first one is do you know a specific place where the monster is or might appear?" Nathaniel asked his first question. "No, that is why some of the military forces will patrol tonight to find out." Mr. Lowell answered. "Then, my second question. How many days has it been since the monster was able to get out of the crypt?" Nathaniel asked, which temporarily made Mr. Lowell stunned.
