Chapter 3: The weakest commissioner (2)

Mr. Lowell entered President Martin's office after knocking twice. President Martin was near the glass window looking down at the city. His office was on the top floor of his skyscraper. "Report." President Martin said. "Nathaniel, received the document, President. Just as you ordered I gave him two days to decide if he's going to take your offer." Mr. Lowell fixed his glasses. "Good." "But President, are you really going to give him one hundred million dollars if he signs for a mission? And giving another hundred million if he dies during a mission... isn't that a bit too much?" "Haha, that's only a small amount compared to what he has." President Martin chuckled before sitting down in his chair. Mr. Lowell had a confused face on and President Martin noticed it. "He has the other piece of the black token." President Martin said with a smile on his face. In a single sentence, the confusion on Mr. Lowell's face vanished without a trace and was replaced with a shocked expression. "The other half of the black token?! That token that was said to be a legendary token?!" Mr. Lowell lost his composure from the immense shock from what President Martin said. "Hahaha, now, now. Calm down. We'll get it once he dies during the appearance of that monster. That bastard, he always brings it with him, he didn't even know that what he had was the broken piece of the black token." The black token was a legendary token. Unlike ordinary tokens, the black token was the only one in the world. Furthermore, the tokens has different colors each, the blue token was the most common of all types of tokens and was considered as a new money within the people who knew about the crypts, the orange token was less common compared to the blue token but it was also considered as new money with a higher value than the blue, the red and silver were considered rare because they contains skills, however, red and silver tokens doesn't always contains skills. Nathaniel only saw three different colors when he sneaked in the crypt. What he saw was the blue, orange and red tokens. Although the black token was considered a legendary token, no one knew what one could get in it. It was also the only token that could still be used even though it was broken. "But, President, why can't we just kill him and get the token from him?" Mr. Lowell asked. "The black token wouldn't accept someone who killed the person the black token liked." President Martin explained. The black token couldn't be obtained just by anyone. The black token was so powerful, it chose the person who could touch it and who couldn't. If a person that the black token didn't like happened to touch it, that person will crumble to death into a fine sand. "Did you mean the black token let Nathaniel touch it?" "There is a possibility, but you know. There is also a possibility that the black stone is weakened because it's broken. But to be sure. We can't kill that bastard without taking any considerations." President Martin looked at the pictures lying on his table. "Make sure to persuade him." He ordered. "Yes, President." Mr. Lowell bowed his head slightly before leaving the room. President Martin smirked while looking at the pictures on his table. They were pictures of the site where the man will appear three days from now. President Martin thought that everything was set if Nathaniel agreed to be a commissioner. He thought that everything was going according to his plan perfectly. However, he was wrong. *** It was the last day that Mr. Lowell had given to Nathaniel. He was currently in his apartment with his mom. Nathaniel's mother was the only family he has left, but if her current situation continues even she might leave him all alone in this world. "Mom, please don't overwork yourself." Nathaniel was eating with his mom. Early in the morning, Emma, Nathaniel's mother, came to his apartment with food in her hands. Her night shift has just ended, but instead of going home she went to her son's apartment. "You don't have to worry about me. Worry about yourself, you know that your condition is worsening yet you keep working in that factory. We'll have to go to your doctor again the day after tomorrow." Emma put more food on Nathaniel's plate. Nathaniel stared at his mom. Emma was only skin and bones, there were dark circles under her already sunken eyes. He hated himself seeing her mother like this. Nathaniel knew that her mother was working day and night because of him. They needed money for Nathaniel's therapies and they wouldn't be able to afford the hospital fees unless someone breaks a bone. And there was no one to do it but Nathaniel's mother. Nathaniel frowned and pushed all the food towards his mother. Emma looked up at him with confusion on her face. "You eat all of it." Nathaniel said. "What?! Is the food not to your liking? Then, wait a little bit, I'll buy you a different food." Emma was about to stand up when Nathaniel grabbed her arm. Nathaniel frowned when he saw how thin and frail his mother's arms were. Once again, he hated himself. "It's not like that. I already ate enough and my boss said that he will treat us all later. Business is doing good." Nathaniel avoided his mother's gaze. "But still, I can't eat all of this. And you even haven't had five spoons-" Emma couldn't finish what she was saying when Nathaniel cut her off. "Mom, please. Just this once." Nathaniel's forehead was creased and Emma noticed this. She sighed and sat back down and ate. Nathaniel made sure that she ate everything before leaving for work. After washing the dishes the two of them were planning to leave. Nathaniel was headed to the warehouse and Emma was headed to her other job. Nathaniel was the first one to exit the door. He blocked the doorway with his arm and stopped Emma from leaving. "What are you doing? I'll be late for work." "Stay here and take a day off." "What? I can't do that." "Just stay here and rest, mother. And quit all of your job." Nathaniel said and made Emma surprised. "What?! Nathan, you know that I can't do that. We need money for your-" "We have money. I mean, we will. You can check your bank account later this afternoon. You'll receive one hundred million dollars." "Nathan, is this a joke? Where would we get one hundred million dollars?" "Mother, just trust me." Nathaniel hugged his mom and closed the door from the outside. As he headed towards the warehouse, Nathaniel had already made up his mind. He took the document out of his bag and signed it. When he arrived at the warehouse, Mr. Lowell was already waiting for him. Nathaniel handed the document to Mr. Lowell and he checked the contents. Mr. Lowell smiled after seeing Nathaniel's signature. "Your first mission. Will you accept it?" Mr. Lowell asked. "Yes." Without any hesitation, Nathaniel answered.
