Ezio:
“See, you were fussing over nothing. The woman is alive and well, but pregnant,” Claire said, crossing her arms over her chest as she entered the bedroom. “I am curious about the father, though. Is he one of the pack members? If he was, then why would she be hiding? The woman wouldn’t be doing something wrong if she slept with him, unless, of course, he has another mate. I doubt that she would be doing something like that,”
I kept my eyes on my laptop, trying to focus on what I was working on, ignoring the clench that I felt in my chest at her words. “Are you even listening to me, Ezio?”
“I am, but you know that the last thing that I associate with is gossip. You can try finding one of the other girls to talk to about this.” I said, and she rolled her eyes.
“It was you who was on about looking for her, and now that you have found her, it seems that you lost all interest. That is not like you to do so, at least, finding out who the father’s child is might help us know why she ran away. She could have been r***d…”
“She wasn’t r***d,” I said, stopping her. Claire frowned in confusion and shook her head in question. “She would have reported it. Any woman in the pack knows to do so. The penalty of it would be death, and I doubt that they would want to be living in the same place with a rapist.”
I knew that it was a risk to speak the way that I was. But right now, I had so many other things in mind, and this child popping up was the last thing that I needed. I didn’t even know what I was going to do when it was born.
“Well, her parents are going to be harsh on her. You know how omegas are when it comes to such scandals. There are other means of taking action, but I think that locking her right now is not going to do you any good. Plus, this isn’t the fourth century where her being pregnant would be shaming her family.” She said, making me raise an eyebrow. “What I am saying is, you can be a little more lenient with her. At least, give her a place to stay. You know, considering the fact that her parents might not be very keen about her staying with them, you take the initiative as the pack Alpha. And allow her to live with her baby. She deserves that much if she is to endure the whole process by herself. You never know, the baby’s father might end up taking responsibility and actually…”
“Why are you suddenly very interested in this situation? The number of women who were pregnant and who have given birth…?”
“Neither one of them were put in this situation, Ezio. And I am the pack Luna, I believe that it is one of my duties to be caring about the pack children.” She said, and I scoffed.
“You do realize that this child is the omega’s kid.” I said, ignoring the clench that I felt in my chest. “Whatever it is that she did, and whatever her reason behind it, it shouldn’t be concerning us. She chose to carry this kid and she is the one who would be enduring the consequences. She should have thought of them before she ran away…”
“At least a place, Ezio.” She said, stopping me. “I believe that we have enough to spare her a room to live in.”
“I am not going to allow an omega who not only ran away, but has caused us the fuss of searching for her for months. She could have been used against us, and I am not going to allow others to think that I would keep an open door to such actions and attitudes. If I do so now, then I am going to see to it that the pack starts acting as they please.” I said, looking my wife in the eye. Claire’s heart raced, and I sighed, taking both her hands in mine, gently squeezing them.
“I know that you are being kind and that you want to help as the pack Luna. I understand that you are being genuine, but there are things where I am going to have to be firm in. I can’t just allow things to go as the pack members please when I know that it can cause problems within and outside the pack. And you know that our enemies are not few.” I said, and she looked down at our hands.
“I am going to give her a place to stay until she’s given birth. What will happen afterwards, I don’t know.” I said, keeping a stern face, making sure not to show her my doubt and hesitation. I didn’t know how she was going to accept things, and I needed time to think about what I was going to do to my child. The fact that this baby was my one heir didn’t slip my mind and considering the fact that Claire was yet to carry a child for me was something that I had to consider. “But I won’t break your word in this.”
Claire’s eyes brightened and she wrapped her arms around me, pulling me in for a hug. I smiled and hugged her back, and my eyes hardened as I thought of the things that I was going to have to deal with. Aurora was going to end up causing me more of a fuss, and I didn’t want to find myself dealing with it.
I just needed to know how I was going to deal with it.
“Thank you for this, Ezio.” Claire said, pulling away from my arms. “I mean, for not breaking my word.”
I cupped her cheeks and kissed her forehead.
“As long as it makes you happy,” I said, making sure to keep a small smile on my face so as not to have her doubting me. “I am going to lay the world at your feet. But now, I am going to have to finish with these emails. I believe that I can trust you with finding her a proper room…?”
