Chapter 5 A Trial

1141 Words
After the fire accident, what Vincent cared about was not his daughter who was locked in there but the damage. Beth sneered. What a good father! But she also realized it was true that Michael saved her life. And that brought her with complicated feelings. Not having Beth’s responses, Claire added, “I’m so sorry, Mr. Stone. She is my daughter. It is my fault that she’s annoying. She started lying to people since her childhood.” “She doesn’t respect us at all. Besides, she is not a good girl. She steals things and flirts with men. We have been bothered by her affairs for years,” Tracy added. “That is true, Mr. Stone. She is a liar and always want to get what Beth has. Don’t be fooled by her,” said Vincent. Michael was on the verge of losing his temper. Hearing these ill words from Beth’s families made him so angry. The sound of laughter interrupted him. Michael frowned and looked at Beth. How could she smile in such a situation? “Yeah, you are all right!” Beth seemed to be elated. “Indeed, Lily Curtis is a liar!” Lily pursed her lips. She was being Beth now. But hearing that made her irritated. “Lily Curtis is a thief!” Beth giggled. She wanted to know how long Lily would bear this. “Lily Curtis is flirty and has affairs with all kinds of men!” “Shut up, Beth Gage!” Finally, Lily rushed to Beth crazily. But before she touching Beth, she was pushed aside by Michael’s bodyguards. Sitting on the floor, Lily was pale and trembling. What had she done? Beth laughed. Lily was bad at performance. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be sweet at school and be bossy at home. Lily bullied Beth all the time. How could she bear Beth scolding her to her face? That was why Beth knew she would step out and lose control. Beth sneered, “If you are Beth Gage, why do you ask Beth Gage to shut up? I am saying bad things of myself. Why are you so mad?” “I…” Lily was panicked. She didn’t know how to explain her reactions. She took a glance at Michael and only found that he was looking at Beth all the time! Lily was full of rage and resentment. Her mother, Claire, uttered, “it is just a slip of the tongue…” “Yes, just a small mistake...” Vincent joined and tried to make such a statement convincing. “Lily, Beth worries about you. She doesn’t want you to lose faith and hope.” Beth thought this must be the most hilarious thing in this world. They were so sweet to protect Lily. Sometimes, Beth wondered if she was the daughter of the Gages or not. “Mr. Gage, look at me.” Michael’s look was stern and cold. “What?” Vincent quailed beneath Michael’s eyes. “Do you think I am stupid?” Michael directly looked into Vincent’s eyes. Vincent couldn’t feel anything by coldness. It seemed that Michael knew everything in his minds. Thinking of some news about Michael, Vincent was frightened. He could do nothing before this young man. The special quality of Michael made him shiver. Vincent stuttered, “M… Mr. Stone, I am sorry.” Beth was stunned. She made efforts to let Lily make a mistake. And Michael frightened her father with a sentence and her father just admitted everything. Though Beth was not close to her families, she knew what kind of person her father was. He was a shameless man who always put money first. He would never give up unless there was no chance for him at all. And this time, he gave up the fight so easily. “Since you are too old to identify your own daughter,” Michael leaned back, “I think it is improper to give the east land.” “No! No! Mr. Stone, it was just a mistake.” Vincent turned pale at once. He dreamed to get that land. He planned to get richer with it. How could his big dream end here? Now, he realized that Beth was special to Michael. Thinking of that, he raised his voice, “We… Beth is our princess. We feared that she wouldn’t be treated well after marrying you. And… That was why we planned this. It was a trial!” Beth was shocked that Michael promised to give Vincent a land. Why would he do that? Did he have too much money? And faced with interests, Vincent suddenly became a great father who loved his daughter. Michael threw him a glance and Vincent fell quite at once. “The deal is the deal,” said Michael. “As long as you do what you should do, you can still get the land. But now, I need to add a condition.” “Mr. Stone, whatever it is, I will do as you said.” Vincent got eyes wide open, knowing there was still a chance. “Get her out of your house.” Michael glanced at Lily. Lily was astonished. From the first second she met Michael, she was attracted by his look and personality. She fell in love with him. But Michael only talked about Beth. He didn’t even look in her eyes. Lily could tell that he disliked her. But why Beth was special to Michael? Because of his grandfather and the medium? How could this happen? Lily was so mad. Everyone adored her and she always got what she wanted. Beth was the one being hated. Now, things changed! Why? Claire pulled Tracy’s sleeve. She was also in shock. Tracy stepped forward. “Mr. Stone, my sister is a widow. It is not easy for her to raise up her daughter. They have lived with us for more than a decade…” Vincent nodded, “It is tough. They always support each other. We can split them…” Looking at Michael’s face and thinking of the land, Vincent lowered his voice. “You are right.” Michael nodded. And then he smiled, “So, you ask both of them to leave your house.” Before they laughed for Michael changed his mind, there was another shocking news to them. Lily was about to cry. She didn’t expect that Michael was such a cruel man. She would not give up! She must gain Michael’s attention and make him love her! “Mr. Stone,” Lily looked at Michael in tears, “we live in the house of our relatives. And you want us to move out. Isn’t it too harsh?” Michael sneered, “Harsh? Did you feel the same way when you throw Beth out of her family? Wasn’t that harsh?”
