CHAPTER 76

1262 Words
VANCE My head remains hanging in shame, heavy with the weight of my foolishness. How could I have been so blind, so easily manipulated by Billie? Her adding her scent to my cologne was a deception. It all made sense now. She changed my scent to suit her. And now, my mate hates how I smell because she smells Billie on me. The realization hits me like a freight train, leaving me in a pool of anger and self-loathing. What would Nicole do if she found out? Rejecting her was bad enough. Knowing it’s Billie she’s smelling on me is going to be an epic catastrophe if she finds out. “I didn’t know she was going to add her scent to it,” I admit again to Vince who hasn’t stopped pacing about, throwing questions at me, grumbling and muttering in both disbelief and outrage at my foolishness. He is throwing a huge fit, anger lacing each word he throws at me. His sarcasm gets to me and I can’t help but defend myself. “That’s the most senseless thing any alpha would do. From someone you claim you don’t even love. Or do you love her? You want us to break Nicole’s heart finally and tell her that you love Billie so much to allow her change your scent? Is that what you want?” he rolls out the questions with pain in his eyes and voice. I struggle to handle the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me. Hating myself more for ever thinking I once loved Billie. Clenching my fists tight and setting my jaw in a firm line, I growl at him. “I never meant for this to happen. Take back those words!” “Stop demanding foolish things and admit you’re stupid.” “I have already and it will forever haunt me. But don’t you dare ever say that I want to break her heart.” “That’s exactly what’s going to happen if she finds out. She’s barely hanging by a thread with what we did. She can’t find out about this. Ever.” “I didn’t mean for this to happen. I don’t want to break her heart,” I croak in despair and misery. I can’t have her reject me for this. “I don’t know what to do, Vince,” I admit bitterly, looking at my brother for help. For once I show my vulnerability to him. He breaks his pacing, his eyes reaching mine, losing all the anger in them. Through our bond I can feel him relax. He sighs. “Do you know what this means?” he asks. “You don’t have to tell me how stupid I am anymore. I know what I did…” “No you don’t,” he cuts me off. “If Nicole finds out that what she’s smelling on you is Billie’s scent, she could reject us.” my eyes widen out in both surprise and shock. “s**t,” I whisper quietly, running both hands through my hair, fear and anxiety churning inside me. I feel our bond pulse as he holds my shoulders gently, reassuring me. “We will figure this out, bro,” he says firmly, his grey eyes full of his promise. He pulls me in for a hug and I hug him back, feeling our bond pulse with hope and determination. Billie’s treachery has not only tainted my scent but the fragile bond holding Vince, Nicole and I together. I have to repair whatever damage my tainted scent has caused or will cause. I need to pick up every shattered piece. “We will build it back. We will undo everything that b***h has done and get our mate to accept us,” Vince pulls away from me, his eyes set in firm determination. “I promise you.” His words ease my fears and anxiety a little as I battle with the weight of my heavy mistake on us. I can’t help but wonder if I haven’t just destroyed any hope of redemption—for me, for us, for the fragile connection that hangs in the balance. “You need to stop using it. That’s the fastest way to stop smelling like her,” he informs me. “I will.” VINCE What the hell was Vance thinking allowing that girl to convince him to do this? “How stupid can you be?” I yell at him, clenching my fists and jaw. No wonder Nicole acted that way. “I didn’t know she was going to add her scent to it,” he admits bitterly. “That’s the most idiotic thing I have ever heard from you.” “Thank you, bro. This helps a lot. We all can’t be like you, Mr. I don’t have feelings,” he sneers at me. “Cut the crap, Vance. She’s not even your mate. How much pull did she have over you to make you allow her add her scent to your cologne? That’s rhetorical in case you’re wondering. By the way, who knows what else she added to it? Those girls are crafty, just like their father. Why do you think I made sure not to have anything to do with Millie? I let out a loud groan, unloading my frustration at my brother’s foolishness. That’s why I never get too close to any female. This could be a huge deterrent to us getting back with our mate. If Nicole gets to know what Vance did, she could go all out and reject both of us. “That’s the most senseless thing any alpha would do. From someone you claim you don’t even love. Or do you love her? You want us to break Nicole’s heart finally and tell her that you love Billie so much to allow her change your scent? Is that what you want?” I can’t hide the pain in my voice as I throw the questions at him. “I didn’t mean for this to happen. I don’t want to break her heart,” he croaks in despair and misery. “I can’t have her reject me for this. I don’t know what to do, Vince,” he whispers sadly. For once I see my brother showing vulnerability. His eyes search mine, pleading. I see my brother in a different light. Nothing has ever fazed him until now. And just like him, I am afraid of the consequences of his actions. “Do you know what this means?” I ask, striding to him. “You don’t have to tell me how stupid I am anymore. I know what I did…” “No you don’t,” I cut him off. “If Nicole finds out that what she’s smelling on you is Billie’s scent, she could reject us.” his eyes widen out in both surprise and shock. “s**t,” he whispers quietly, running both hands through his hair. His aura filling up with fear and anxiety. No wolf likes to smell another wolf on their mate. I feel our bond pulse as I grab his shoulders gently, reassuring him of my commitment to help. “We will figure this out, bro,” I say firmly, before hugging him. Inside us, our twin bond pulses with hope and determination. “You need to stop using it. That’s the fastest way to stop smelling like her,” I inform him. “I will,” he answers, pulling away. “Come on. We have to see Mabel before she leaves.”
