CHAPTER 97

CONFRONTATIONS 1 NICOLE I can’t remember ever tossing and turning like this in my entire life. I have never been a victim of insomnia. Until now. My gaze falls on the clock hanging on the wall and see it’s almost midnight. Nearly three hours have passed since I found myself alone in this room, on this enormous bed. Three hours since I had dinner with my mates, their parents and Torin. A silent dinner with me darting my eyes around their troubled faces, except for Torin’s. Vince had bid me goodnight, seeing me to my door. Vance was the same and I had tried not to show how deeply his behavior affected me, but it still stung. As my thoughts whirl, muffled voices suddenly pierce the silent room. Flinging off the bed covers, I slide out of bed and head for the door. Placing my ears against it, I hear the voices louder but not clearly. The voices are coming from the room opposite mine. Cracking the door open slowly, I peer outside, scanning to the corridor for signs of anyone. Seeing nobody around, I tiptoe towards the door where the sounds are coming from, and get assaulted by a mixture of the scents of my mates. One is comforting and the other still unpleasant. Pressing my ear to the door, their voices become audible. “You are putting yourself at risk!” Vince’s voice is strained with anger. “I know, but it’s the only way I can be free of her,” Vance’s reply makes my heart beat thud heavily in my chest. “Billie did it because of me. It’s only fair that I give her what she wants.” What? My brows spring up in surprise. “You’re making a grave mistake. We can find another way to deal with this. What about Nicole?” Vince pleads in a soft voice. “We promised we would make it right with her. Did you forget?” “I am sorry, bro, but I can’t have another person mark me. It has to be with Billie.” A loud gasp escapes my mouth at his last words, and my knees feel weak. Tears fill my eyes, blurring my vision as I find myself unable to move, rooted to the spot. Did Vance just choose Billie over me again? Next thing I see is the door swinging open and both my mates are staring me in the face. “Nicole?” Vince calls me as he reaches for my arms and pulls me into the room. “It’s not what you think, sweetheart,” he cups my face in his palms, but I shove them off. “Then what is it?” my gaze is directed at Vance, who has one arm resting on the window ledge and looking outside, his back to me. “Stop ignoring me!” I yell as more tears well up in my eyes., streaming down my cheeks. “Look at me!” “Sweetheart…” Vince tries to approach me again. “Stop calling me sweetheart! My name is Nicole!” I lash out. “I am not your sweetheart!” A ringing pain flashes through my heart. “Look at me, Vance Stone, and tell me why you won’t talk to me or look at me?” Vince turns to his brother who still remains at the window. “If you don’t want me anymore just say it. After all, you’ve rejected me once. A second time shouldn’t hurt that much,” I choke out, squeezing my eyes shut as the memories of that day comes over me. I feel like it is going to happen again. “Nicole…” “No, Vince,” my voice breaking as I stop him. “I am no longer a child and neither is he. Let him speak for himself. Let him tell me that he still wants Billie and reject me finally…” A sudden gust of wind blows through the room and before I know it, Vance is standing in front of me, his eyes a deadly silver. His breath is heavy as his chest rises and falls. I can see his wolf is in control. “Don’t you dare tell me to reject you!” he growls as gripping my chin with his fingers. “Don’t you ever think I am rejecting you.” he whispers, resting his forehead against mine and closing his eyes. “Don’t ever think so, brown eyes.” he sighs deeply, steadying his breathing and opening his eyes. “Don’t ever think I am rejecting you.” “Then why does it seem so? You said it has to be with Billie,” I whisper back, watching as his eyes that slowly return to their original colour. He releases my chin and pulls away slightly. Though it’s a little space between us, yet I miss his warmth. With gentle fingers he starts to wipe the tears from my cheeks. “It’s not what you think.” “Then what is it?” Vince comes forward, standing beside Vance. Both share a quick look before turning back to me. I know they just mindlinked each other. “Vance is in some deep s**t, that’s why he can’t be close to you,” Vince explains, making me look up at Vance who nods in confirmation. “What is it?” I ask. Vance says to me, gratitude filling his voice. “Thank you for not recoiling from my touch this time.” “I am sorry, I can’t help that I hate how you smell right now,” I confess. “Thank you for being truthful,” lowering his head and crossing his arms over his chest. “May I ask why you trashed my room?” Anaya, where are you? I call out to my hidden wolf. “I am sorry about that…” “It’s okay. I just want to know why,” Vance waves me off. “I guess my wolf and I…” “Your wolf?” Vince cuts in. “I want to think so. She…uhm…uhm…I just hated how you smelled and wanted it off you,” I notice the brothers share a meaningful look. “What?” I ask. “Promise you won’t get mad or sad,” Vince says, approaching me and taking my palms in his. A fearful look in his eyes as he gazes down at me. “Why do I need to promise?” my eyes move from him to Vance, who looks so regretful. Vince starts rubbing circles on my palms. “Because of what Vance is going to tell you next.” I have a feeling that I am not going to like what I will hear next, judging by the looks in the eyes of my mates. How do I make such a promise when I feel this way? What could it be? “I promise,” I find myself saying. “Okay,” Vince moves to my back, holding my shoulders. “Please, don’t be mad or sad. He didn’t know.” My heart is beating madly in my chest, sweat is pouring out of my palms. If not for Vince touching me I am sure my heart would have burst out of my chest. “What is it?” I ask, licking my lips in nervously, watching how Vance shares a quick glance with his brother over my head. “The reason why I smell like this is because Billie changed my scent,” Vance’s says regretfully, meeting my eyes. My eyes widen in shock. “I smell of Billie,” he continues. My breath catches in my throat, and I stop breathing.
