CHAPTER 30

MATES WITH HER. VINCE “Don’t be shocked by my words. A father can only wish the best for his sons,” our father continues, stunning Vance and I more with his revelation. We’ve stopped walking, faces gob smacked, as he strides on without missing a step. “Keep walking and close your mouths,” he growls at us. “She’s a great girl.” Vance and I share bewildered looks before joining him. What? This revelation is both unexpected and amusing. Our father secretly pinning for us to be mates with Nicole. And his wish came true but our foolishness almost smashed his dream. Well, I say almost because I still maintain a high hope that Nicole will accept us. No wonder the old man is fond of her. Both he and our mother. They’re both going to have the shock of their lives when they eventually find out the truth. I can imagine the disappointment on his face and fear to imagine what mother would do to us. “Think about it,” he further says as we reach and enter the dungeons, heading for the row of cells on lining both sides of a long corridor. “One of our warriors was able to keep two rogues alive.” We stop at the last cell where two guards stood, greeting us. The cell door opens to reveal two unconscious and bloodied rogues, chained at their ankles and wrists, sitting on chairs with heads were bent sideways. “Wake them up,” our father ordered the guards. Both guards grab buckets of water and pour it on the rogues, who jerk awake, orientating themselves to their environment. They start jerking wildly against the chains, their yellow, ugly eyes flashing with the madness their feral nature affords them. “Make them calm down,” our father orders the guards over our link. The guards respond by delivering punches to their faces and middles, eliciting loud grunts from the rogues. “Why are you here?” my father growls at them. “We won’t tell you anything, Alpha,” one of them replies with a smirk, blood dripping from his lips. Vance steps forward, fury in his eyes, and starts raining punches down on him. “Answer him!” “Your punches mean nothing,” The other mocks, equally smirking. “Bring the tools,” I command the guards, stepping forward. “Oh, you will talk,” I promise him. He will talk and tell me why the hell that dead woman was in my mate’s room. A woman that clearly attacked Nicole. I also want to know how my sweet mate defended herself and defeated the woman. And why was she lying about not remembering. The other rogue groans, his yellow eyes swollen on both sides. “You can do your worst. We won’t tell you anything.” “We shall see,” I say as the guard returns with a trolley full of torture equipment we use for situations like this. “Hang them up,” our father orders as he picks up a thin, sharp knife, dangling it before the rogues. The guards undo the chains on their hands and hook the ends to a long hook fitted into the concrete ceiling of the cell. Our father dabs the tip of the knife with wolfsbane. “I am sure you can smell what this is,” He says before he making a cut on the stomach of the first rogue, causing the yellow-eyed monster to howl loud in pain, drawing blood. He dabs more wolfsbane on the knife and does the same to the other, who was already shaking in fear. His howl was the loudest. “Now tell me who sent you to attack my pack!” “We…he…The,” “Shut up!” roars the first rogue to his counterpart. “He’s going to kill them all.” Vance sends a tight punch to his jaw, cracking it. “Speak,” our father orders the other one. “Now!” The rogue whimpers, tears filling his eyes, “He’s going to hurt my family. You have to save them.” “Tell us what you know and we will see what we can do,” I say to him. “There’s nothing you can do,” the first one continues. Vance is about to punch him again when our father stops him. “I promise to help you if you tell me what you know,” Our father promises him. And I know he means it. “You can’t help us. No one can.” “There’s always someone who can help. know you’re not really rogues.” “Took you long to figure out,” he scoffs. “Tell us what you know.” “Yes we are not rogues. Witchcraft was used on us to make us look like rogues.” “How? And who is behind it?” I ask, wondering how this was related to Nicole. “You probably—” he stops, wincing as he moves his wrists around the shackles. “Bring them down,” the guards remove them from the ceiling and help them sit back on the chairs. “Go on.” “Has word reached this side of the hemisphere on the attacks on packs?” “Go on.” our father nods at him, folding an arm over his chest and the other over it, resting his jaw on his palm. “There’s a mad man…a hybrid actually. Part werewolf, part witch or vampire. No one really knows,” he looks over to the second rogue. “We were warriors in our pack when he attacked us.” “What pack?” “Moonglow Pack…” My father sent a link to us. “Find out if the alphas can speed up the meeting.” “…we were just a small pack, nothing special about us. Our alpha was—” he pauses and bends his head, swallowing hard, gritting his teeth. “…our alpha, he loved his people. But he wasn't strong enough to defeat the monster and his witch.” “Witch?” I ask, looking at Vance. “Yes, he had a witch who was helping him turn wolves to rogues. At least the ones whose alphas refused to hand their packs to him.” “Why did he attack?” our father asks. “He’s searching for something or someone.” “This thing or person has power that he wants,” the other rogue adds and starts coughing. “Get him some water,” I say to a guard who stops with what the other rogue says next. “No need,” he gives us a sad smile as he too starts to cough. “We were doomed the moment we opened our mouths to tell you what we know.” Both start coughing uncontrollably. “What…” “That’s the witchcraft from the witch. We can’t talk…” coughing heavily. “Whatever he’s looking for is going…to…make him…” he stops, wheezing as he struggles to speak. “It’s a she-wolf…” That word rings loud in my ears, heading straight for my heart with a loud thud. “he’s going to…” coughing up blood now. “Just…” his eyes roll back into his head and he slumps against the chair dead. The same with his partner. The five of us sit in silence looking down at the two dead bodies. “Burn them off,” our father orders the guards, turns and walk out of the cell. Vance and I behind him. “Reach out to the Alphas. Tell them we have a lead,” he orders me as we walk out of the dungeons. “That’s you Vince. Vance, I want you to help him with that. This is urgent. Everything else is on hold.” “Yes, Dad,” we both chorused. “And think about what I said about Nicole. I have a feeling she’s going to make a great mate and Luna for you two. Or any of you.” He stops and turns to look at us, his eyes full of hope and concern. “Vance, I know you’re with Billie…” Vance cuts him off. “I…she..” Our father cuts Vance off too with a raised finger as he stammers, trying to say what I think he’s going to say: that it was over between them. “I understand if you want to take her as a chosen, but know that I will never accept her as part of the family. I only wish there was two of Nicole to go round.” “Dad, Vance is…” I start to say when he cuts me off too. “You don’t have to defend your brother, Vince. You’re both adults and can make your own choices. I just hope you can choose Nicole. She may be younger and not strong as you want your mate to be, but she’s beautiful and intelligent. She’s nice also. Her being an omega doesn’t make her weak. Strength isn’t only in muscles and bones. It’s in the mind. That girl has a good heart. Think about it.” With that he walks off. And leaving us totally flabbergasted. Again. “Did he just say all of that?” Vance asks, daze like me, both of us watching our father’s departing figure. “Unbelievable,” That’s all I can say right now, processing the unexpected encouragement. “He’s going to be so pissed,” Vance says. “Maybe not. His dream is actually coming true.” Once Nicole accepts us. “Once she accepts us. And that’s the real work.” “Vance!” A loud shriek shatters this moment for us. Perfect. Just the people I want to see. Ares growls loudly in my head, his rumble echoing in my chest as I turn to face the evil duo behind us. “Go for it, buddy," I tell my wolf, giving him control.
