CHAPTER 70

SHE’S NOT MY GIRLFRIEND “She’s no longer my girlfriend,” Vance stated firmly, halting his pacing to face Nicole. “But why were you angry just now?” Nicole inquired in confusion. “I am not angry at you. I am just angry that she put her hands on you,” Vance clarified in a tone full of protectiveness and frustration. Nicole was caught off guard by his response, her expression reflecting a blend of surprise and relief. “Don’t look so surprised, Nikki,” Vince’s voice brought her back. “Can you tell us what happened at school?” She shook her head. “I don’t want to talk about it. It’s over.” “We need to know.” Vince “I don’t remember,” she lied, her voice faltering slightly. Scoffing, Vance sat back beside her. “You know what happened, Nikki. You told us, remember?” She frowned, trying to recall. “I did? When? What did I say?” The guys shared a knowing glance, indicating they knew she was lying. “You don’t? Really, Nikki?” Vince raised an eyebrow, his tone skeptical yet sympathetic. She shook her head, uncomfortable under their scrutiny. “You don’t remember telling us, she accused you of stealing their mates?” Vance's words caused her head to fall to her chest in embarrassment, confirming her reluctance to discuss the incident. Nicole dropped her head in embarrassment. That was exactly the reason why she didn’t want to talk about what happened. “Don’t be afraid, Brown eyes,” Vance reassured, reaching out to gently grasp her hand. Nicole trembled slightly at his touch, her emotions swirling as she met his gaze. Her gaze shifted to their intertwined hands, a rush of familiar sensations coursing through her at their contact. “Am I supposed to still feel those?” she questioned softly. “Though the bond is fragile, you can still feel it,” Vince replied, easing to the edge of his seat and reaching for her other hand, instantly welcoming the sparks that burst over his arms. Nicole drew in a sharp breath as Vince’s touch released another set of sparks and tingles on her skin, her senses overwhelmed by the intensity of their shared moment. “They said I was stealing you from them,” she murmured, embarrassed that the entire school had heard that. “I guess your flowers…” she peeked at them from beneath her brows briefly. “It must have given them the impression that…” “Who stepped on the flowers?” Vince asked in a menacing tone. “Billie,” her heartbeat tripled. “But, it means nothing to me. They’re just flowers.” “Not to us,” Vince squeezed her hand. “We wanted you to know we were thinking of you.” Nicole pulled away from them and stood up, walking back to the window. “You were thinking of me?” Why?” “Isn’t it obvious already, Nikki?” Vince said, standing up too. “Obvious?” she said softly, looking from one pair of grey eyes to the other. Vance drew in a deep breath, linking Vince. “This is the moment, bro.” Noticing his brother’s slight nod. “You know already who we are to you and it’s only normal for us to be thinking about you. We wanted you to feel special,” Vince said, not taking his eyes off her. He saw the deep sadness and doubt twirling in her eyes. “We are your mates, Nikki and we should always think of you al…” Vince was saying until she stopped him with the one question he and his brother had been dreading to hear her ask. “Why?” with downcast eyes, she asked the one question on her mind since the incident. It was hard to ask, but she had to. Finding the courage to look at them, she found Vince’s eyes. His eyes were the ones that held so much hatred for her. She still remembered. “Why did you reject me?” Seeing the fear and remorse in them. Vince knew they had to do this. They couldn’t hide the truth any longer, and she had the right to know why they rejected her. He wished he could skip this part and just have her forgiveness without divulging the reason. Goddess! He wanted to hold her and comfort her. Make her smile, hear her laughter and giggles. Wishing he hadn’t said those awful words to her. Wished he had claimed her three years ago when her scent first hit his nostrils. Vance joined Vince, looking at the sad face of their mate. Her brown eyes were dull and it tore at his heart in many ways. He wished with all his heart that he could wrap her tight in his arms, place her head on his chest and whisper apologies non-stop to her. He wished for so many things. He wished he could rewind that day, three years ago and claim her as his mate. She glanced from one to another, waiting for their response. On one hand, she feared what their response would be. Would they say she wasn’t strong enough for them? After all, they were alphas and she was an omega. On the other hand, she wanted to know why so she could satisfy her curiosity. “We thought of your nature as an omega. Your weakness and your refusal to train…” Vince began but stopped when Nicole gasped loudly, holding her chest. Nicole held her chest releasing a loud gasp unconsciously, feeling the tears stinging at the corners of her eyes. “Brown eyes,” Vance whispered, inching forward but was stopped by her raised hand. “Please, don’t come close,” she begged him, sniffing back tears and bending her head. Still holding her chest, she allowed the tears to fall, her anguish evident. Within them, their wolves whimpered in unison, feeling the pain of their broken mate. Vince shot his head upwards, praying for help from the Goddess, while Vance remained rooted to the spot, watching helplessly as his mate crumbled to the floor. “Nikki!” the brothers chorused, rushing forward. “Stay back!” Nicole spat at them. “I am not enough for you, so stay back. You don’t have to care.” “That was then, Nikki,” Vince whispered, taking a step, but she stopped him. “Please,” she sobbed, feelings of inadequacy, weak, useless and worthless splashed over her, engulfing her in a bath of immense emotional pain. “I am not worthy to be their mate,” she kept telling herself. “They find me unworthy.” “Brown eyes, please, listen to us. We don’t think so any longer,” Vance pleaded in a trembling voice, crouching down to her level. All he wanted was to hold her right now and beg for her forgiveness for the rest of his life. “Nicole, please,” he whispered. Vince joined him, his hands aching to touch and pull her close to him. To comfort her and tell her she had become the most important thing to them right now. Nicole hated how they were begging her, how their voices resonated with affection for her. Why didn’t they realise this until they rejected? What was different? Nothing had changed about her between that day and now. Why? She asked inwardly, hoping to find the answer as she searched for answers. Was it because she was in the hospital after they rejected her? Was it because other alphas were after her? Or because she fought with that witch? Damn it! I need answers! She yelled at herself. Though she wanted to know why, but she never imagined it would be because of her nature as an omega. Never imagined in her wildest dreams that she could ever be rejected because of that. Not that she asked to be mated to them. If anyone was to be blamed, it’s the one that paired her with them. She should have known. She should have given them strong mates with alpha, beta or gamma blood. Or even a warrior. Why pair her a weakling with strong mates? Why make her go through this? “Nicole?” Vince’s voice broke through her thoughts. His hand settling on her shoulder. While lost in her thoughts, both had reached her sides. Their warmth shrouding her peacefully as they each wrapped a hand behind her. Vance pulled her hair back while Vince was rubbing soothing circles round her shoulder. Their scents were calming her making her half lean into Vince’s embrace, inhaling his cedarwood scent. Vance’s sandalwood scent was missing and replaced with a more pungent smell. She wanted to wrap her hands round either one of them, cry into their chest and lose herself. They were her mates and she should find comfort in them. They should be her sanctuary. The ones that were supposed to wipe her tears away and promise to never make her cry. Yet. They were the engines manufacturing her tears. “Please, leave,” she whispered through her tears. She couldn’t allow herself to be swayed by their presence. She had a lot to think of. “We don’t want to leave,” Vince insisted, tightening his hold on her back. “I want you to. Please, “she sniffed, pulling away from Vince and shrugging their hands off her. Both brothers looked at each other, mindlinking. “If that’s what you want,” Vance sighed as both of them got to their feet. “That’s what I want.” Nicole waited for the door to close before she unleashed another round of tears, collapsing again to the floor, clutching her breaking heart, and sobbing loudly. Two sets of loving arms pulled her into a tight and warm hug. Holding her body firm against them as she cried her heart out. She knew it wasn’t them for there were no sparks. Deep down inside her she wished it was them. She wished they had come back and not left when she told them to leave. She wanted her mates.
