Sam sat at her desk the next morning, a stupid grin on her face. She had enjoyed the evening with Amber. After they finally got dressed. She owed Mya for bringing her spare clothes. They had walked back to Sam's house. Sam was starting to regret her proposition to fight. If it meant she got to spend more time with Amber, she would gladly have all the human protection they wanted her to have. But she wasn't going to pull out. She wanted more freedom. And she was the Alpha, alpha's didn't have constant protection, and definitely not humans. She frowned. Yesterday, when she'd listened to Ambers heartbeat after she found her, it was slow and steady, nothing like it should have been after a long hard run. Come to think of it, she hadn't even been out of breath. Mya also never seemed to be tired or winded. Thinking of Mya she looked at the woman sitting in her usual spot.
"Hey, how was your date with the sexy redhead?" Mya looked up at her in surprise.
"You remembered about my date?" Mya set the paper she was reading down.
"Why wouldn't I?"
"You were a bit distracted last night, you know when it was mentioned."
"I was not distracted! Why are you deflecting?" Sam pointed at her. "Did you screw it up?"
"No," Mya answered, too quickly. "Well, I don't know." She shrugged. "Doesn't matter."
"Tell me. Maybe I can help or maybe it helps to just talk about it?" Sam offered and found she really wanted to know, and maybe help.
"Really?" Mya sat forward. "I don't want to bother you with my shit."
"Look, I get I have been a b***h. But I thought we were getting past that. If you want to talk, let's talk."
"b***h is an understatement." She smiled. "But yeah, you have been getting more likable." Sam walked around her desk and sat down opposite Mya.
"So how do you think you f****d up?"
"Well, when I left you guys I drove to her place and she said we should walk, it was a beautiful night and I agreed. She took my hand and I felt her touch radiate through my body. We got to Blake's. She loves that place so I figured it was the best option to spoil her and get some brownie points." She spread her hands in a helpless gesture.
"Sounds good so far," Sam said confused.
"Yeah! We got a table, and she slid in next to me, instead of the opposite, which was amazing. Our legs touched and she kept running her hand up my thigh. I did the same, you know."
"Yes."
"So after dinner, obviously we had to walk back to her house because I left my car there. We held hands again, and just enjoyed each other's company. At her place, I kissed her." Mya paused.
"Okay, this all sounds good, so where is the fuckup?" Sam was frowning now.
"Okay so, when I say kiss, I mean, toe-curling, take your breath, steal your senses, kiss. I lost my head!" Mya jumped up and started pacing. "I shoved her back against her door and pushed my body into hers. By the time I realized what I was doing, she was already fighting me. Shoving at my chest." Mya groaned and the anguish in her eyes was clear.
"Did she say anything?"
"No, well, I didn't really wait to hear. I mumbled an apology and ran." She shoved her hands through her blue/black hair. "How could I lose it like that? What if I hurt her? What if I didn't realize what I was doing, or that she was fighting me?" She sat. "I will never forgive myself."
"Okay, listen. What I heard was that you got carried away by passion, that she probably felt too. Maybe, just a suggestion, you should call her." She held up a hand for Mya to let her finish. "She is probably just as confused as you. Maybe she was just trying to get her breath, or get you both inside."
"Maybe." She smiled. "Yeah maybe, I should call her." She grinned at Sam. "You're not so bad at this advice thing."
"Don't spread the word."
Amber parked her car and just sat. The evening before she'd seen a side of Sam she didn't know. A very likable Sam, and the way Ambers body reacted to her... Wow. She had no idea why she agreed to have dinner with Sam and her mom. It was stupid and crazy. Amber sighed and got out of her car. Walking into the building she greeted Taylor. She made it all the way to the elevator before she realized Taylor didn't greet her back. She turned back a frown on her face.
"Taylor?" Amber walked to her desk and touched her shoulder. When she looked up and met Amber's eyes they were wet and troubled. "Okay, come on. We'll talk in my office." Amber took Taylor's hand and led the way to her office. "Sit. I'll get coffee."
"That's my job."
"Not right now. Now you tell me what Mya did." Taylor lookup in sudden surprise.
"How did you know it was her?"
"Because yesterday you were excited and grinning from ear to ear. Last night you went on a date with her, and today you are miserable." She handed Taylor the cup of coffee. "Two and two."
"Yes, okay." She wiped her nose with a tissue Amber handed her. "I think it was more my fault than hers though. We had this amazing date. Dinner at my favorite place, we walked there and back, so it was nice and easy to just relax and talk." She sighed. "We flirted and touched and it was all going well. Then when we got to my door, we kissed." Taylor paused and took a sip of coffee, wondering how to put it into words, when she didn't really understand herself.
"Did she hurt you?" Amber asked. She didn't think Mya would, but Taylor was obviously distraught.
"No! No, nothing like that. I mean it hurt. But she didn't hurt me. We kissed and it was amazing, I used my last bit of control to try to get enough space so I could open the door so we could get in. But she pushed me away. She looked like I bit her tongue or something. And rushed off. She didn't even take her car. She fetched it sometime this morning before work because it was gone when I left for the office." She wiped her nose again. "Maybe I read it all wrong. Maybe she didn't want me that way, and I ruined our friendship now."
"I don't think that's the case, Tay. Mya was as excited about your date as you were."
"Then maybe she realized when we kissed that she didn't want me that way."
"She would have told you that. Mya is not the type to just leave you hurting like that." Amber laid a hand on Taylor's arm. "I think you should just talk to her."
"I don't know if I can look her in the eyes!" Taylor covered her face with her hands. She peeked through her fingers at Amber. "Could you maybe?"
"Oh no! You two need to sort your own things out!"
Taylor laughed. "I had to try." She sobered. "Thank you."
"Anytime. Now go and clean up. Everything will work out."
The man smiled gleefully. His plan was in motion! He watched his sister walk into the Amber building. All she had to do was charm the socks off the blonde. His sister was talented. She would get it done. He pulled away, driving to his other problem. He had to keep his eyes on her.
