“Mae?” her sister’s voice sounded like she was losing her mind now. Mae tried to answer her, but she couldn’t. The vampire was still staring at her. He didn’t move or flinch. His eyes were focused on her. He was creeping her out.
The screeching of tires sounded, and a door opened and slammed shut. Mae tried to open her eyes, and she saw that they were back at the house. She lifted her arm and tried to open the door. She moaned in panic as she couldn’t move her body.
“Help me,” she whispered. Darkness swirled in her mind and she could feel it dragging her down. Was this it? Was this the moment her mind was going to snap? Was she going to lose her sanity?
It felt like it.
She saw Mystic rushing back towards her with Kalan and Oren. She opened the door and stepped aside as Kalan reached for her. “It’s alright,” he told her in his reassuring tone. Mae held on to him as he carried her out of the car into the house. He took her to her room, where he lay her down on the bed.
“What happened?” he asked.
“I don’t know…I… Dr Madison said this might happen,” Mystic said, moving to the bed. She touched her forehead as she continued to speak with Kalan. “She’s fine physically but her mind is not. She needs the vampire so that she can heal completely.”
“What?” Kalan stepped closer to the bed. “You can’t mean that we have to wake him up. It’s too soon. She hasn’t reconciled with the fact that she’s his bride yet,” Kalan said in a whisper. But Mae heard his every word.
“I know. I don’t want that for her. But…”
“But what?”
“She needs him. Without him she might die.”
“What about her werewolf mate? She wants to find him.”
“I know that. But she won’t be here to reunite with him if we don’t help her now. The vampire is her only hope. Mason linked her to him, and he was the one who helped her heal. He should help her again.”
“And…? What comes after that?”
Mystic was silent for a few minutes. She stared down at Mae as she softly touched her cheek. “I don’t know. But it’s the only move we have right now. Vicker is powerful enough to heal her.” She got to her feet and moved to the door. “I hate this. I really do. I hate the fact that I can’t help her, and I have to make the biggest decision of her life without her consent. For all I know, she’ll hate me for waking him up and bringing him back into her life. But I don’t have a choice. Maybe I’m selfish and want her alive for the wrong reasons,” she said with a catch in her throat. She sniffed as tears ran down her face. Kalan walked to her and pulled her into his arms.
“Mystic, its okay,” Mae wanted to say, but nothing worked. Her body was still frozen in time, even though she could hear and see everything around her. She was still between the past and the present. Kalan held her sister close. He pulled back and helped her wipe her tears. He touched her so softly, their love was clear to see. Mae wanted that. She wanted a mate who would love her. Larson came to mind. She experienced a little of that – but they didn’t have enough time. He sent her away before they could explore each other. He sent her to him instead…Mae shook her head. She didn’t want to think about Vicker because she might be pulled into the past.
But it didn’t matter. Mystic was going to wake him up.
“We will wake him up,” Kalan was saying, “and then, while he’s helping her heal. We'll search for her mate. Both males will have to fight for her in order to win her heart.”
“Thank you,” Mystic said. She wrapped her arms around Kalan and held him tight. They walked out of the room, followed by Oren, leaving her alone. Mae stared at the door, waiting. She knew they were going to wake up the vampire. Her heart hammered in her chest as the minutes ticked by. After what felt like forever, the door was opened and Vicker walked in. His shaggy hair hung around his face, and his red eyes took her in. He had a way of staring at her that made her feel like he was looking deep into her soul. He looked pale, and a little unsteady on his feet. He hasn’t fed in a while. Her heart clenched in her chest at that thought. Mae hated the feeling. She didn’t want to feel sorry for him.
He walked into the room, followed by Mystic and Kalan. His brother Cassia was the last one to walk in. Vicker walked to the bed, but Mystic stepped in front of him.
“Let’s get one thing straight. You’re only here to help her heal her mind, nothing more. The decision to wake you up was mine, and not hers. She doesn’t want you here. But she needs you.”
“I understand,” Vicker said softly. His voice was rough. Mystic gave him a look, but she stepped away from him. He walked to the bed, and sat down. “Hey scaredy-cat, can you hear me?” he said. Mae tried to move away from his touch but she couldn’t.
“She’s not responding to you,” Cassia said.
“Yes. I think she might be too far gone,” he said, narrowing his eyes on her. “I might have to go in her memories and bring her out. You’ll have to use your gift to give me access to her mind.”
“No,” Cassia said. “That’s dangerous. What if you get lost in there?”
“Then you’ll have to find me,” Vicker said. He got up and rounded the bed. He sat down on the other side and pulled off his shoes.
“There has to be another way, brother.”
“There’s no other way. If we wait for too long she might slip away from me,” he said, lying down next to her. His body heat enveloped her. Mae’s eyes fluttered. Flashes of memories played in her mind. She clenched her teeth trying to hold on to her reality, but the darkness was too strong. It was pulling her under.
“Do it Cassia, do it now,” Vicker said. He sounded close. So close to her she could breathe in his scent. A cold hand was placed on her temple. She felt a pressure in her mind as if something was slipping through. The past and the present blended together. One minute she was lying on the bed, the next she was in an empty room. The door opened, and she could see Vicker and Cassia standing there staring at her.
“Are you ready?” Cassia said cautiously as he stared at her brother.
“Yes.”
“Once you walk through this door, you will be fully in her mind. I might not be able to pull you out,” he warned.
“I know,” Vicker said. He took a step into the room. Cassia stopped him.
“Remember. Don’t change anything. You are here to restore her memories, and not change the past. Do everything exactly as you did them so that she can comes back whole. If you change the tiniest thing, her mind will have to work overtime in order to make sense of the change, and she is already on the brink of collapse. Don’t change anything or she might never recover,” he said.
Vicker nodded as he walked through the door. Mae’s eyes fluttered closed and reality slipped away as she focused on the red eyes staring at her.
Vicker tried to take a step towards her. But her memories shifted and she was back to the day they first met. The vampire suddenly made a move towards her. Mae whimpered, closing her eyes. He was coming for her.
Oh God, she couldn’t do this.
“f**k,” he growled, driving her fear up another notch. “I can’t touch her. I ignored her the whole time.”
The room went eerily silent.
What is he doing now?
Mae opened her eyes. She looked at the chair. The vampire sat on it clearly ignoring her. The door opened and in walked another vampire dragging an unwilling female into the room. She cried but the vampire didn’t care. Mae’s heart clenched in her chest as she watched her being dragged to the vampire. Vicker stared at her. His lips were pulled in distaste. But that didn’t stop him from reaching for her, and dragging the weeping woman onto his lap.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Vicker dragged the witch onto his lap. He clenched his jaw as he felt Mae’s eyes on him. Pain lashed through his heart, because of what he had to do.
Fuck, he didn’t want to do this. He wished he could change everything he’d done in the past. He wished he could take it all back, and save her the misery he caused her. But that meant he could lose her. God, this was going to be the hardest thing he'd ever done. When they first met, he wasn’t in his right mind. He didn’t even recognize her as his mate until it was too late. And now he had to relive that time all over again.
Fuck, Vicker thought as his fingers clutched the back of the female’s head. She shivered in his arms.
His fangs lengthened, and he didn’t linger as he sank them deep into her flesh. She jerked against him, and then moaned when he started to suck her blood into his mouth. He fed from her until he was satisfied. When he was done, he tried very hard not to look at Mae. But that was not how it went. Feeding always left him horny. Vicker groaned as he knew what was coming.
Don’t think about it. You are here to save her, even if you have to hurt her to do it.
“Leave,” he told the vampire. He didn’t even wait for him to get to the door before he shoved the female witch off him. “Make me come,” he demanded. She scrambled to her knees to do his bidding. He hissed as her hands went to his zipper. He was so hard; his c**k throbbed in his pants. She pulled the zipper down and reached inside. Vicker stared at Mae. Her eyes were focused on him as if she was transfixed. Vicker shivered. Back then she didn’t feel the intensity of her stare. Now, he could feel it as she stared at him with curiosity, fear and arousal. She was aroused by what she was seeing.
“Suck,” he said. The word echoed all around them. Mae flinched, but she didn’t take her eyes off him. Vicker groaned as desire burned through his veins.
Fuck, was he sick that he was enjoying this more than he should. He knew that it was the memories affecting him, but since the elders’ hold on him was removed, he felt everything more acutely, even her eyes. He could feel them searing his skin.
Oh f**k, he closed his eyes as he f****d into the witch’s mouth.
Look at me baby, he thought, even though it made him sick to his stomach. He wanted her to be the one on her knees, staring up at him. The one to suck his c**k until he came.
Vicker clenched his jaw as pleasure cascaded down his back.
He opened his eyes and stared at her. Something intense past between them.
He had to reach her, because he wanted his mate back.
