Nayla ran for hours, until she couldn’t run anymore. Her legs buckled beneath her and she fell to the ground. Mae pushed through her changing back to her human form. She looked all around her. Trees surrounded her, and the sun was starting to set. She shivered, hating that she did it again. She allowed her emotions to control her. She walked to a large tree truck and sat down. She leaned her back on the trunk and closed her eyes.
She’ll just rest there for a few minutes, and then she’ll make her way back to the fairy kingdom. She sat there for a few minutes, and then she stood up. She felt a presence behind her. She turned around to find her sister standing there. She was naked as she was. She must have changed into her wolf too.
Damn, she followed her, Mae thought feeling bad. She was putting her sister through hell. She should be home taking care of her baby, not chasing her around the forest. She turned to face her. Mystic walked towards her.
“You shouldn’t have come after me,” Mae said as her sister came to a stop in front of her. She got to her feet. Mystic stared at her not saying anything. She pulled her into her arms, and held on tight.
“I couldn’t let you deal with whatever this is alone. I wasn’t there the first time you ran away, and I promised myself that I’ll never let you go when I finally find you.” She pulled back, and stared at her. “So stop running because I’ll come after you every time. I wasn’t there for you before. But now I’m going to be there every step of the way.”
Mae’s heart clenched in her chest.
“What about your baby?”
“He has his father, but you don’t have anyone but me. I’ll run after you even if I have leave him behind,” she said.
Mae shook her head.
“Whatever it is, we can deal with it together. Just stop running,” Mystic said. Mae nodded. She wiped at her eyes. “What Dr. Madison say?”
“It wasnt Dr. Madison. It was Dane. He said we have to wake up the vampire for me to feel better. I stopped sleeping the day he was brought into the house. He’s haunting my dreams,” she said.
“What? ” Mystic took hold of her arms. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
She couldn’t tell her because she was afraid of what she might do. Now she regretted not telling because waking up the vampire was way worse the getting him killed. As if she’d just realized what she said, Mystic gasped.
“What do you mean he said we have to wake him up?”
“I didn’t wait for him to explain. I just ran,” Mae said wrapping her arms around her body. It was getting colder, and the darkness was thickening all around them. She could barely see her sister.
“We should get back. Do you think you can change back into your wolf? We won’t be able to make the journey back in human form.”
“Yes,” Mae said reaching for her wolf. They changed back, and made their way to the Dr. Madison’s house. The lights were still on in the house. The door opened just as they walked to the car. Dr. Madison came out.
“I’m so glad you’re back,” she said as she came down the stairs.
Mystic changed back into human form as they came to the car. She went to the back and came back with clothes for them to wear. Mae changed back. She took the clothes from her, and got dressed.
“Are you alright?” she asked Mae. “I’m sorry. We didn’t mean to scare you like that.”
“She told me Dane said that we need to wake up the vampire. Is that true?” Mystic asked.
“Yes. Since she was linked to him, he could be the one to restore her mind. Or she’ll continue to deteriorate. There’s no telling how far her mind was fractured or if she can heal it on her own because Dane is afraid of getting lost in her mind. I think the best course to take is to wake him up, as Dane suggested.”
“But he was linked to her while she was asleep. The opposite happened now. He’s the one who is asleep now. Shouldn’t the same thing apply,” Mystic asked. She sounded desperate. She really didn’t want that vampire anywhere near her sister.
“No. Not if she was the one absorbing his strength in order to stay alive. Now that source has been weakened since vampires are at their weakest when they’re asleep, I am afraid that she might be in danger of losing her mind. She needs him, at least until she can heal completely.”
“Dammit,” Mystic said pacing in front of the house. Mae stepped close to her and placed her hand on her shoulder. She was stressing herself out, and that wasn’t good for the baby.
“Calm down. Everything will be fine,” she said. “Let’s go home. I’m tired.”
Mystic stared at her. She closed her eyes for a second, and then nodded. “Thank you Dr. Madison.”
“Anytime,” she said.
Mystic turned and they walked to the car. They got in and they drove away from the house. They drove in silence for a while with Mae thinking about what had to happen.
She could handle it, she thought. It wasn’t like she’d never went toe to toe with the vampire, but back then she had to do it.
Mae’s vision suddenly blurred right before her eyes. She rubbed her eyes, and blinked rapidly. She gasped as the world went black all around her.
“What wrong?” Mystic asked next to her but she sounded so far away like she was beneath water, and she could barely hear her. “Mae?”
“Mae?” his voice washed over her. She blinked her eyes as she stared at Larson. He’d called her mate. And she could feel deep in her gut that she was his mate. But why was he putting her through this. Why was he separating them when they should be taking their time to get to know each other? Why wasn’t he claiming her? He should claim her and leave a mark on her. But he was not doing any of those things. “You’re going to be alright,” he said as he let the sack, they dropped on her head down so that it covered her. She could barely see a thing. Someone stepped close and bound her hands, and legs.
“Don’t make it too tight. I don’t want the ropes to hurt her,” Larson said touching her shoulder. Mae relaxed feeling reassured that he was there. He wasn’t going to let anyone harm her. He was going to make sure that their plan of killing the evil vampire went off without a hitch. Mae knew their plan very well. It was so simple she thought she could pull it off, except the part where she had to kill the vampire. She didn’t think she was strong enough to kill a full-blooded vampire. But Larson believed that she could do it. She was his mate, he wouldn’t lead her astray. But she was so scared. Her body trembled as they moved all around her.
“Relax,” Celeste said as she placed a hand on her shoulder. “We’re just going to drop you off at the drop off point and the vampire we arranged everything with will take you to the nest. He has everything arranged, don’t worry. You won’t have to deal with anyone else except him. And he will keep you safe. He wants Vicker dead as much as we do. He’ll tell you what to do once you get there.” Celeste moved away from her.
Vicker….that name sounded familiar, Mae thought. She heard that before. But she didn’t know where. They moved all around her as they got her ready to be taken to the drop off point.
“We should be grateful that the elders bring supernatural females to that bastard to appease him or else we wouldn’t have a way in,” she heard Celeste say. That confused her a bit.
“What?” she asked, Larson lifted the sack again and stared down at her.
“Don’t worry yourself about anything. Focus on what you have to do,” he said. Mae nodded, and took a deep breath. “Good,” he said.
He dropped the sack and stepped away. After a few minutes they carried her out to the car. They drove away. Mae kept her eyes shut and focused on Larson’s scent. It calmed her, and made her feel like everything was going to be okay. He was doing this for him, for the pack that will eventually be hers. She wanted to prove to him that she could be his perfect mate. And she wanted to be.
They drove for a while, and then the car slowed down. The sound of doors opening sounded all around her.
“We’re here,” Larson said next to her. She tried to see through the sack, but it was too thick. Larson wrapped his arms around her and carried her out of the car. He placed her down in another car. “I’ll be waiting for you once your mission is complete,” he whispered in her ear.
“How will I find you?” she asked. She didn’t know how to get back to his pack. She was out of it when he took her there for the first time, and they blinded folded her when they drove away. She didn’t know where his pack was, Mae suddenly realized.
“Don’t worry. I’ll find you. I did the first time,” he said.
Yes, he did. He came out of nowhere and saved her. She felt him step away from him.
“Larson,” she said. As if he sensed what he needed he listed the sack and stared down at her. He leaned close and placed his soft lips to hers. Mae shivered, and that’s when she heard the simple word she’s been dying to hear. It exploded through her mind, making her jerk away.
Mate!
Before she could say anything, the car came to life, and Larson stepped away stepped away from her taking his calming presence with him. It made her feel like the moment she’d just had was unreal somehow as if she hadn’t heard her wolf call him mate.
Nayla, Mae called her, but the something sharp pierced her skin. She hissed and tried to move away, but she was bound. Within a few seconds her head became woozy, she slumped to the side she passed out.
The next time she woke up Mae frowned, because she wasn’t sure if she was dreaming or it was reality. She sat in a corner of a dark room except for the light coming from a large fireplace. The fire was blazing. She could hear it crackling from where she sat. A large chair sat to the side of the fire and large male stood beside it, staring at her with red eyes and made her flinch. She’d seen those eyes before.
“Come out little girl,” he'd said taking a step back.
She had been hiding in the closet with her sister. When he came with his vampires, and killed everyone in her pack, including her father.
No. He couldn’t be that vampire – the evil vampire who destroyed her and her sister’s life.
A scream bubbled in her throat. No. This couldn’t be. Did her nightmare come to life? He was the vampire who haunted her dreams for as long as she could remember. Mae shifted, trying to cower into the corner. She realized that she was not bound anymore. Her arms and legs were free. She could run.
She needed to run.
“Mae?” she heard her sister’s voice. She sounded worried and panicked. She looked all around her but she couldn’t see her.
“Mystic?” she tried to call her.
“I don’t want her. Send her back,” he said talking to someone she couldn’t see. Mae looked all around her, but there was no one there.
“She is a gift from the elders,” the shadow next to the chair shifted and another vampire appeared. He stared at her, and then turned to Vicker. A satisfied smile played on his lips. He was enjoying this. “You know I can’t return a gift from them. You have to accept her or kill her. Either way, she’s in your hands now.”
Mae felt her stomach fall at his words.
She didn’t want to die. She had to return to her mate.
Oh God, why did she agree to avenge his pack? She wasn’t even his Luna yet.
The vampires in front of her stared at each other. Vicker’s hand shot out, and he wrapped his fingers around the other vampire’s neck.
“I hate it when you play games with me, Fluvia. You should know that by now. I said take her away,” he said through clenched teeth.
“Alright, I’ll take her away,” he coughed out the words, tapping the vampire’s hand. “I’ll take her to the milking room.”
The milking room? What was that?
“No. Find another place for her,” Vicker said squeezing tighter. Fluvia tapped rapidly as he gasped for air. Vicker let him go.
“Alright, but you have to give me some time,” he said.
“Fine,” he said turning to the fire. The other vampire gave her a look and then blended into the shadows.
Mae’s eyes returned to Vicker. Her heart slammed hard into her chest as she found him staring at her.
No.
She didn’t think she could kill him.
