Mae followed her sister into the house. The smell of disinfectant lingered in the air. She looked around the house. It looked clean and bigger than what the outside suggested. Mystic turned into a room just off the hallway, and she heard her talk to someone. Mae made her way there and stopped outside the room. Mystic appeared a few seconds later.
“Come in, she won’t bite,” she said with a laugh. Mae shook her head, as she walked into the room. The doctor sat behind her desk. She looked up at her as she walked in. She had a calm demeanor about her that made Mae relax.
“Come and sit down,” she said pointing to the chair in front of the desk. Mae made her way there. She heard the door close behind her. She looked over and saw that her sister had just left the room. “It’s alright I told her to give us a moment to talk.”
Mae walked to the chair and sat down. The doctor stared at her. She felt awkward sitting there, and being assessed like she was some crazy person. Well, she did feel a little crazy, especially after what happened earlier.
“What is wrong? Your sister said that you’re not sleeping,” she said her assessing eyes easing a bit. Mae nodded. “Care to elaborate.”
Not really, Mae thought. The reason she couldn’t sleep was because of the vampire. She was afraid of what he might do once he managed to drag her into that room. She didn’t think she could handle it.
“Uhhh…I don’t know. I was hurt badly a while ago. Maybe it’s because I slept for a long time. I don’t have any sleep left in me,” she said with a tiny laugh. It sounded stupid she knew, but she didn’t have anything to say to her. She hated the fact that the vampire haunted her dreams, but there was nothing she could do about that. He wanted his bride back and he would do anything to have her back.
“May I examine you to see what could be the reason,” she asked getting to her feet. “We can do it over there.”
Mae turned to where she was pointing. There was an examination table in the corner. She got to her feet and moved to him. Dr. Madison picked up the tools she’ll need and stepped forward. She held a torch and pointed it into her eyes. Mae sat there and let her go through her exam. Once she was done, she walked back to the desk.
“Physically you’re fine. You should be able to sleep. Is there something more going on?”
Damn. Mae tried to think of another lie, but the door was opened. “Sorry. I didn’t realize you were with someone,” he said backing out.
“No. Dane come in. I think you might be able to help us,” she said calling him in. He looked at the doctor and then her, before he walked into the office. He was big and she sensed something inside him that she sensed in Kalan too. It was strange. Mae stared at him wondering why she felt that way. She’d never met the male. But he was making her feel safe and secure like Kalan did.
“What do you need help with?” he asked staring at the doctor.
“She’s can’t sleep, and I can’t find anything wrong with her physically, maybe you can try…” she trailed off as Dane cleared his throat. He didn’t look like he wanted to do whatever she was asking him to do. “Her sister is worried. I don’t think it’s good for her since she just had her baby. Her stress will affect the baby.” she said as a way to convince him.
Mae bit her bottom lip. She hadn’t realized how this was affecting the baby. She should have thought about it. Mystic has been worried about her for a while now.
“Alright,” he said stepping beside her chair. “Give me your hand.”
Mae lifted her hand, and placed it in his big one. Dane stared down at her, and then closed his eyes. Mae stared at him as he did something. But she couldn't tell what, because she didn’t feel anything. After a few seconds, he let go of her hand and stepped away from her.
“What?”
“Her mind is fractured. I couldn’t delve deep into her I because I could get lost in there too, but that’s what’s happening with her. Someone fractured her mind badly. I don’t think she was supposed to survive whatever happened to her,” he said not looking at her. Mae felt her heart clench painfully in her chest.
She was supposed to die?
“You did say you were hurt badly?” she asked softly as if she felt bad for bringing it up. Mae nodded. She didn’t remember much of it but she remembered Mason. He’d appeared out of nowhere. He was a seer he could have foreseen the whole thing and came for her. Tears had run down his face as he looked down at her broken body. Mae didn’t remember much of what happened after that. “How did you survive?”
“Mason helped me. He linked me to a vampire so that his strength could keep me alive,” she said, trying very hard not to think about Vicker. She didn’t know what kind of memories would pop up in her mind.
“Where is he?” Dane asked.
“He’s sleeping,” Mae said. She stared at him confused. Why was he asking about the vampire? She didn’t need him. She could survive without him.
“When did you stop sleeping?”
Time seemed to stop as it all suddenly hit her. Mae swallowed the gasp that rushed through her. No. It wasn’t possible. She stopped sleeping the day he was brought into the house.
What the hell did he do to her?
She shot to her feet. The doctor followed her, raising her hands as if she was trying to calm her down.
“Please answer him,” she said.
“I think you need to wake him up,” Dane said softly, but the blow of his words still hit her hard in the chest. Mae shook her head. She rushed to the door and ran out of the office. The doctor called her name but she didn’t stop. She had to get away from here. She felt Nayla whine deep inside her as she sensed her distress.
Tears filled her eyes as she ran out of the house.
"Mae?" Mystic called her name as she got out of the car. Mae didn't stop she ran towards the back of the house. She pulled off her clothes, and let her wolf take over her body.
"Mae!" Mystic's scream filled her. Nayla faltered.
No. Don't stop, Mae urged her to run. To get away from here.
