“You are kidding me, right?”
Kate was rolling on my bedroom floor laughing as tears rolled down her cheeks. After my encounter with Keith, he had offered, more like told me he was going to drop me off seeing as it was already late and he didn’t want anything to happen to his pet, he brought me home where Aliyah and Kate were waiting for me.
“It’s not funny, you guys made me commit a crime and the bailed on me in the process,” I scowled through at them through the mirror while I braided my hair. “His pet? Are you freaking kidding me? There is no way in hell I will be that arsehole’s pet. Not now, not ever.”
“You are killing me here.”
“I’d like to do that for real.”
Aliyah was sat on my bed shaking her head and trying so hard not to laugh but I could see her through the mirror, the humour lines were prominent on her face. “You don’t mean it, there is no way that Keith Michaels would be that deranged and have such weird fetishes.”
I sighed and spun around to face the people who had gotten me into the situation I was currently in. “This is all your fault and trust me when I say this, that guy is worse than deranged and he meant every word he said. I should know because I was there.”
Kate stopped laughing and sat cross legged on the floor, “Then you are in a lot of trouble,” she said with a straight face. “My advice to you is just to make the most of it and get that boy naked.”
I swear, I almost jumped off my chair and strangled her because this was all her fault. All of it was her fault and I wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t pressured me into doing this.
“I can’t do this with you,” I pushed off my chair. “I have to prepare something for Reece and myself before you make me commit a crime that might land me a for life sentence.”
Kate quickly got off the floor and ran after me. “I’m hungry too.”
**********
I was dreading this but I knew it was going to happen. I bit my lip and looked outside the window waiting for his car to show up. Yes, I was waiting for Keith because he made it clear that I was to be under his surveillance 24/7.
“Why do you keep looking outside like that? Are you waiting for someone?” Reece, my little brother asked as he ate his breakfast.
“What! No, what makes you think I’m waiting for someone?”
“Because you keep looking outside so often that that is the only reasonable explanation as to why you are acting weird.”
These were one of the few moments where I didn’t like the fact that my 10-year-old brother was smart enough to catch on to such things. Why couldn’t he be some dumb kid who liked playing with toy cars and not reading and creating things? Was I the only one in my family who was an average Joe without any knack for school?
“Okay, fine. I’m waiting for someone but that’s none of your business, just eat your breakfast and get going before the bus leaves you,” I sighed as I closed the kitchen curtain and my eyes for a moment.
“I’m done,” Reece said and I opened my eyes. “See you later Mace and whoever you are waiting for better be worth it.” Then he picked up his bag and walked out of the door while I stood there wishing I was as smart as my little brother, then I wouldn’t be here waiting for the world’s biggest arsehole to show up in my driveway.
I looked outside the window again and there was no sign of Keith so I started cleaning up and making sure I didn’t have much to do after school when. I placed the dishes in the sink and ran the water on them as I cleaned the kitchen counter and placed everything back when a loud revving sounded from outside. I rushed to the window expecting to find the familiar car that had dropped me off yesterday but what I saw was the complete opposite.
It wasn’t a car but a motorcycle. A freaking motorcycle for crying out loud. I picked up my bag no longer eager to go to school if it meant riding a freaking death trap and then walked out of the door making sure to lock up behind me.
“What took you so long princess?” Keith asked not smiling. “I thought you wouldn’t want to be late and tarnish your record.”
I scowled as I walked down the front stairs and to where he had parked his death trap. “Where is the car?” I asked with crossed arms. There was no way I was getting on that death trap; he would have to drug me to get me on that thing.
“I don’t like it; besides, this is more effective.”
“Effective in killing me,” I scoffed. “Do you really think I’m that stupid?”
Keith smirked, that annoying smirk I had come to realise meant he was enjoying my discomfort. “Aw, is little princess afraid of a little motorcycle?” he cooed as if he was talking to a little kid. “I thought you were daredevil considering you broke into my house last night.”
He just had to bring that up of all things, what the hell was wrong with him?
“Lost for words?”
I narrowed my eyes at him. “No, I was just wondering why you are such an arsehole,” I replied. “It must be a work carrying around that big ego of yours every day of every second.”
Keith narrowed his eyes at me in return, “Just hop on, I have more important things to do than argue with a criminal.”
“I am not a criminal and there is no way in hell I am getting on that death trap.” I stood my ground, there was no way I was letting him push me around like I was one of his minions.
“I don’t have time for this, get the f**k on or I’m leaving you here to walk. Your choice,” he said coldly and it made me want to crawl in a hole and die. “What’s it going to be?”
I sighed and moved closer to him then he passed me a helmet and waited for me to put it on. I did so and watched him, I had never been on a motorcycle before and never had I ever thought I would ever ride it.
“What are you waiting for? Hop on.”
I bit my lip, “I don’t know how to,” I mumbled under my breath.
“What was that?”
I sighed, “I said, I don’t know how to okay.” I threw my hands in the air in exasperation. “I never had any intention of ever riding a motorcycle so I don’t know how to.”
Keith sighed and ran his hand cross is face then hopped off. He moved to where I was stood and basically lifted me without any question and placed me on the motorcycle. “There, no shut the f**k up,” he hopped back on and revved the engine. “I would hold on tight if I were you.”
I threw a lot of curse words at him as I wrapped my arms around his torso tighter and wished I would just die. What was everyone going to think when they saw us together? So many things that I didn’t have any time to actually think about how I was going to handle them because Keith sped out of my driveway and everything moved so fast that I clenched onto his jacket for dear life. In moments like these I was so happy I chose to wear a trouser and not a skirt because the wind was blowing so much that I had to bury my head in his back.
Before I knew it, we were pulling into the school parking lot. I immediately got off and almost kissed the ground because I had made it out in one piece.
“I was never going to kill you,” Keith replied with an eye roll. “I’m not that bad of a guy.”
“Tell that to my racing heart,” I shot back as I took off the helmet and handed it back to him. “Never again am I going on that thing, I value my life too much to let you take it. I still have a lot to do.”
Keith placed the helmet in a compartment and crossed his arms across his chest. “Things like what? Learn how to actually break into people’s homes without getting caught?”
I scowled, “Are you ever going to let that go?”
“Not a chance in hell princess,” he replied with a wink.
I rolled my eyes and looked around, there were people who were looking at us and everything finally came crashing down. They had seen us bantering and even riding in together, this was not good from the looks like was getting from the cheerleading squad that was around Jay.
Shit, s**t, I had gone and messed up again.
Jay walked over to us while I still stood there not knowing what to do.
“Sup man,” he said to Keith and they did some weird handshake and then he was staring at me. “Who is she?”
Keith smirked as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me closer which did not go unnoticed by the group of cheerleaders and Jay. “This here is princess and she will be sticking around for now,” he said it so casually that I wondered what they hell he was planning. Why hadn’t he just told Jay that he caught me breaking into his house and this was a way for me to atone for all my sins because there was no way in hell I would ever willingly want to stick around him and his group of devoted worshippers who were probably plotting my murder as it was.
Jay looked at me and then looked back at Keith, he seemed to be processing something and I couldn’t blame him. He crossed his hands across his chest as he tilted his head to the side. “Wait, don’t I know you?”
No s**t Sherlock, I’ve known you since we were kids because we went to the same school, that was what I wanted to say but instead I said something else entirely.
“I don’t think so.”
Seriously? That was the best I got after having so many comebacks in my head, I was really crazy, that was the only explanation that I had. I pulled away from Keith but he pulled me back in. “Princess here will have lunch with us today and for the next foreseeable days or weeks, depends how I will feel?”
I glared at him, I had not agreed to have lunch with him and Jay. I had lunch with Aliyah and Kate and there was no way that was changing because the Almighty Keith said so.
“Oh, cool,” Jay said and smiled. “It was nice meeting you princess.”
“My name isn’t princess, its actually Macy. And it was nice meeting you too but I have to get going, my friends are waiting for me,” I pulled away from Keith’s hold and practically ran all the way inside the school.
I stopped running when I was inside and speed walked to my locker where Aliyah and Kate were. When they saw me, Kate started laughing while Aliyah looked a little pissed off and I had no idea why.
Kate wrapped her arm around me as she continued laughing. “Girl, you have gained yourself some recognition and not the good kind,” she hunched over laughing. “Everyone now practically knows who you are.”
I looked around and people were watching me which only made me feel uneasy. I didn’t like any sort of attention unless it was from my parents and brother but even that got overwhelming when they expected me to do something. I pulled Kate up then grabbed the books I needed for my morning classes when Keith and Jay walked into the school.
All heads turned while the girls threw flirtatious looks their way and some guys said hey to Jay but not to Keith which wasn’t uncommon. Keith had his bag draped over one shoulder with his hands in his pockets with a resting b***h face which had become so familiar to everyone that seeing him smile was rare. They seemed to be talking and then Keith’s eyes met mine and he nodded his head in my direction.
“Looks like your prince charming and his best friend are coming this way,” Kate smirked and leaned casually on her locker. She was enjoying this too much and I didn’t like that. This was all her fault.
I didn’t have time to think of what to do because Keith and Jay were now standing in front of me and everyone was watching. I swallowed and tried to compose myself. Keith looked at me, “Don’t forget our lunch plans,” he said with a straight face and then he leaned in, “I hate it when people stand me up, so don’t do it unless you want things to get messy.”
“Hey, I’m Jay,” Jay said to my friends and I was shocked.
Kate looked at him then at me then she shrugged in response. “Kate and this is Aliyah,” she nodded in Aliyah’s direction who looked to be engrossed in her book.
Keith started walking without so much as a word to my friends. “It was nice meeting you Kate,” Jay said as he followed after Keith.
I stood there watching them walk away and wondering what the hell was actually going on and why he wanted me to get involved with him. There just had to be a reason why he was doing everything and it had nothing to do with me breaking and entering in his house.
Kate pushed herself from her locker just as the morning bell rang. “You know,” she started as we all walked to our first class, “From the sides, that kind of looked like you and Keith were kissing.” Then she walked quickly instead leaving me to think about what that meant for me.
