BOOK ONE

“Well, well, well, what do we have here?”

I swallowed and backed up as he advanced towards me. I knew this was a bad idea but Kate had made me do it.

“It isn’t what it looks like.”

I wanted to smack myself for saying that. Of course it was exactly how it looked like. There was no way to explain why I was in his room.

“Really? Because from where I am standing, it looks like you broke into my house,” his eyes darted to my hands and his eyebrows arched as he crossed his hands across his chest. “And stole my briefs.”

Shit, s**t, s**t. I really was screwed and nothing I said would get me out of this. I was utterly royally screwed.

What happens when the school’s hottest bad boy catches you in his room with his briefs?

Macy Miller,

Your average student with average looks. She is the utter definition of average and she wears it with confidence, or all she lies to pretend. I mean, what else could the daughter of two high-achieving parents and two high-achieving brothers who never fail to make her feel bad for not being as smart as they are.

That all changes with a dare gone wrong.

Keith Michaels,

The literal definition of I-don’t-care. Laid back and always causing trouble but his mum is always there to get him out of it. But instead of helping, all she does is make things worse but that changes when a little surprise shows up in his room.

Snarky comments, stolen kisses, midnight drives and breaking-and entering, what could possibly go wrong?

“No, I am not going to do it.” I turned and slammed my locker shut as I looked at Kate, she was one of my best friends and I loved her but sometimes she just became too much. Her pink hair was pulled up into two pigtails. I pulled up my bag higher over my shoulder. Kate rolled her eyes. “Come on, it’s just a simple thing, stop acting like such a coward,” she rolled her eyes and started chipping the nail polish on her hand. “You have to act living and stop trying so hard to be like your over-achieving parents and Julian.” I sighed, she wasn’t wrong. Everyone in my family was way too smart and had dreams and passions while I on the other hand didn’t know what I even wanted to have for lunch. It was a real kick in the arse if you asked me and that was why I hated family dinners whenever Julian came back home for break. I hated having to be compared to my smart intelligent brother who was basically good at everything. “Leave her alone Kat, not everyone is a daredevil like you,” Aliyah, one of my other best friends said in my defence. “I wasn’t talking to you little Ms. Everything has to be perfect,” Kate replied with a dramatic eye roll. “Everyone knows that you are worse off than Mace is, you always want everything to be perfect and if you aren’t number one then you throw a tantrum.” Aliyah scowled and I knew that was my que to intervene. Kate always liked getting under Aliyah’s skin for how dedicated she was when it came to her studies. “Kate,” I said in a warning tone as we walked to the first class of the day. “What?” she replied and raised her hands in mock surrender. “All I am doing is stating facts that we both know. And besides, is she isn’t Ms. Perfect then why can’t she just own up to the fact that she has a crush on someone and won’t tell us who.” Aliyah sighed and pulled her books higher up her chin and then walked a little faster and into the classroom. I narrowed my eyes at Kate as we also entered the classroom after her. “Learn to keep your mouth shut sometimes Kat, not everyone is outspoken the way that you are,” I said just as I took my seat net to Aliyah. Kate rolled her eyes and popped a bubble-gum into her mouth as if Aliyah and I were the ones being dramatic. I grabbed my Bio book from my bag and placed it in front of me while Mr. Fisher stood up and addressed us. He was a scrawny man with big rimmed black glasses that were way too big for his face and the clothes that he wore looked three sizes bigger on him. I lightly shook my head and smiled. “All right class, welcome back from your break and I hope you all are ready and excited to be back,” Mr. Fisher said enthusiastically. The majority of the class groaned. We only had a week’s worth of break and here he was sounding as though we had gone on a summer break and sun bathed in the hot sun of Layton. “This time around we shall be looking at how we can use logarithms to solve everyday problems,” he continued. My throat felt dry and I could feel my heart start to beat erratically. I hated Math, no matter how hard I tried I just couldn’t understand it and hence why I was so far behind in the class. The only way I had gotten by was all because of Aliyah’s help. Mr. Fisher continued talking but I could hardly hear what he was saying, all I could hear was the loud thudding of my heart in my ears. The door to the classroom swung open and hit the wall with such force that everyone’s attention, including mine were all pulled there. Even Mr. Fisher stopped talking and turned to see who had caused such a commotion. Lo and behold, it was the one and only Keith Michaels, the school badboy and utter charmer. Everyone was deathly afraid of him because of all the stories about him and what he had done. “Nice of you to finally join us Mr. Michaels,” Mr. Fisher said coolly. Keith threw him a smile, “The pleasure is all yours Fisher,” he replied as he walked over to the back of the classroom where his best friend Jay was sitting. Mr. Fisher sighed and went back to talking about logarithms and how important they were but my attention was glued on Keith. I had no idea how he could always walk into class like that and get to talk to all the teachers like they were worth nothing. Just because his mum was the District Attorney, he thought he could get away with anything. “Stop staring at him like he is a piece of meat and you can’t wait to tear into him,” Kate whispered. I quickly turned to face her and narrowed my eyes at her. “There is no way I would ever think about him in such a manner,” I whispered back. “The guy thinks he owns this entire town and that all the girls want to sleep with him.” “But don’t they?” she asked smugly. My eyes narrowed even more than they had been. “I don’t know about you but I know for certain than neither Aliyah nor I want to have anything to do with him. The guy is trouble.” “You both need to have some trouble in your life.” I rolled my eyes and tried to concentrate on what Mr. Fisher was saying and not think about what Kate had just said. There was no way I was getting involved with Keith, I knew better than to disappoint my parents and brother like that.                                                                                           ********* The rest of the morning classes went over quickly and I was more than relieved when the bell signalling lunch rang. I quickly packed up my books and pens and slung my bag over my shoulder. “I’m so hungry,” I said as Kate, Aliyah and I walked side-by-side out of the classroom. “I don’t know about you two, but I could literally an entire cow right now as long as his cooked.” Kate rolled her eyes while Aliyah laughed. “You know that’s both theoretically and physically impossible to do, right?” Aliyah asked as we stopped by our lockers. This was one of my favourite things, the fact that all our lockers were literally next to each other which meant that we didn’t have to wait for the other at their locker. I opened my locker and dumped all my morning classes books then grabbed my lunch. Kate looked at me through narrowed eyes as she popped a gum. “Why don’t you just buy food from the canteen?” “Because,” I started as I closed my locker, “I don’t want to trouble my parents and ask for money every day when I could simply cook the food myself.” I loved cooking, it was probably the only thing that I was good at and everyone knew that hence why I always made dinner when everyone was around but when they weren’t, I still made sure I made something for Reece and myself. But sometimes, I made sure to leave some for my dad and mum in case they got hungry when they came back way past midnight. “Anyway, I’m not complaining because I love your food,” Kate said, “It tastes way better than the crap they feed us at this shithole.” Aliyah scowled as she closed her locker and turned to face Kate, “This place isn’t a shithole, it’s a school and it’s the best in the entire town. That should count for something.” “Yeah and it’s a shithole,” Kate said with a shrug. I sighed and lent back on my locker while I closed my eyes. These two liked arguing so much that sometimes I thought there was something that had happened that they wouldn’t tell me. I heard the one and only familiar voice of the school’s most priced guy and I knew his best friend was in toll. “How about Leah? She’s hot and it would only be a one-time thing?” Jay asked. I opened my eyes and watched as Keith and Jay walked in our direction. It was no doubt that they were both attractive and very good to look at, but Keith was trouble and I had no idea why Jay chose to hang out with him. The guy was the basketball captain for crying out loud and his parents were ridiculously rich, not old money but the new kind that was there to stay. “Nope, she’s too clingy and I don’t want that,” Keith replied. He had his hands tucked in his school pants and his neck-tie was pulled down while his shirt sleeves were rolled down. This was the thing about McKinley High, all the students were made to wear uniforms so as not to discriminate against those who didn’t have anything. However, considering the school was mostly for the children of the high class part of society, I had no idea why. The girls wore blue skirts with white long sleeved shirts but could wear trousers if they felt like it and a blue jacket while the guys wore blue trousers or shorts depending on what they preferred with long sleeved white shirts and it was mandatory that everyone wore a blue neck-tie. Yeah, it was one of those schools and I preferred wearing the trouser over the skirt. “But you could just do it once off and that would be that,” Jay said as he brushed his hair aside. “Just think about it man, it would be worth it. Just for a night.” Keith sighed, “I’ll think about it but right now I could definitely use a smoke.” I was disgusted with how they were talking as they walked out of the school double doors that led outside. “I know what you should do now,” Kate said snapping me out of my thoughts. “And you won’t like it but I win enjoy every second of it.” I didn’t like how she said it and I knew I was in for a lot. Why was I friends with her again?                                                                                         ********** “You have to be kidding me,” I said nervously as I looked at the huge house that stood not more than ten feet away from Aliyah had parked. “I am not doing it, it’s a crime and I could be arrest if I was caught.” Kate rolled her eyes from the passenger’s seat. “Stop acting like such a coward, all you have to do is sneak in, find his room and get his briefs. Simple.” “What if he is around and he finds me?” “Relax, he isn’t because he and Jay were playing basketball.” This was so bad on many levels and I had no idea why Aliyah wasn’t saying anything and why she had drove here in the first place. I looked up at the mansion again and felt my heart drop all the way to the floor. This was bad, I didn’t want Keith to catch me in his house and then have his mum press charges against me and then I would end up getting arrested which would mean that my dad had to get me out and then my parents and brothers would all be disappointed in me. There was so much at stake. “Come on Mace, we don’t have all day and he could be back any minute now,” Aliyah said for the first time. “Just do it so she can leave you and stop calling you a coward.” Kate smiled triumphantly and turned to look at me. Taking a deep breath, I pulled myself together. It was time I did something out of my comfort zone. “Okay but you have to tell me if he comes back while I’m still in there,” I looked at both of my best friends and wondered what I was thinking by going along with Kate’s crazy idea that could possibly get me arrested. “We will, now go,” Aliyah said while looking around the place nervously. I got out of the car and made my way around Keith’s mansion before I found an open window and climbed through. The inside of the house was even more elegant than the outside. I thought the water fountain was amazing but I was so wrong. My eyes roamed around the spacious place taking everything in. The walls were covered with artworks and pictures everywhere of Keith as a kid and him in his teens years and some of him and his mum and dad. Slowly, I made my way around the place looking for his room but I ended up finding myself in the kitchen. It had a huge marble counter and a huge refrigerator mounted on the wall. Everything was so huge that I felt intimidated. I turned out of the kitchen and found a huge staircase that led upstairs where his room was no doubt located. I made my way upstairs while making sure to look at everything and take it all in. It wasn’t as if my parents didn’t make enough money because they did. My dad was a well-known lawyer while my mum was a medical doctor who worked around the clock so we had enough money for them to send me to the best school in town and send my brother abroad to the university of his choice and provide us with everything we wanted and needed. But this, this was on a whole new level. Before I knew it, I was standing in front of a door with a sticker that read, ‘STAY OUT’ in blocks and I knew it was his. Taking a deep breath to calm down my racing heart, I placed my hand on the doorknob and twisted. The door opened with ease and I entered. Keith’s room was painted a dark green with green beddings, basically everything in his room was green save for a few things that were black. Find the briefs and get out before anything happens, I told myself and proceeded to open his drawers. The first one I opened only had his socks, the second one had his neck-ties and the third one only had sweatbands. I sighed and moved to the closet, everything was black except the school uniform which was blue and I could make out any green. I opened the first drawer and lo and behold, I found what I was looking for. I smiled to myself and picked one up then closed the closet and turned to leave when I bumped into something. Someone cleared their throat and I froze because I knew all was over for me.
