The bell rang and all I wished for was for time to stop or for the Earth to open up and swallow me whole. I couldn’t have lunch with Keith, the guy had an ego so big that it didn’t need any more inflating. The lunch bell rang and my fate was about to be sealed.
“You know you can’t stand him up right,” Aliyah said as we packed up our bags.
I sighed because I knew she was right. I felt deflated because that was what I had been thinking throughout my morning classes and I barely paid attention to anything that the teachers were saying. I kept sneaking glances in Keith’s direction and he didn’t seem to be interested in what they saying because he had his legs propped up on the table with his head buried in his phone typing away.
“Stop sulking and look at the bright side,” Kate said smiling.
“There isn’t any bright side to being forced to hang out with such a person,” I sat back on my chair and covered my face with my hands. “He is practically threatening to report me to the police if I don’t do what he wants which according to what I have learnt from my dad is blackmail.”
Aliyah sat next to me and wrapped her arm around my shoulders, I knew it was her because she smelled like flowers. “I’m sorry that you have to go through this and that I was a part of it. If I had known this was how it was going to end up, I would have never made you do it.”
“Well, you did and now she has to spend time with two sexy guys, I mean what could go wrong?” trust Kate to only think about how the person looked physically and not how they were mentally or emotionally and how that could affect you. “And speaking about lunch, here comes Mr. Sexy on legs.”
I looked up and Keith was walking towards me. He walked so casually with a sense of peace if that was even possible.
“Let’s go,” and then he started for the door.
I sighed and picked up my bag, Jay was standing there waiting for me but he kept throwing glances in Kate’s direction who was on her phone scrolling through.
“I’ll see you guys later,” then Jay and I followed after Keith.
**********
Lunch with Keith and Jay was weird as hell, Keith was on his phone the entire time and to make matters worse, we were outside sat in a secluded area. I didn’t know how to feel about that.
I took out my lunch bag and pulled out my food. I had made cheese-balls with a fruit salad and a wrap. Yes, I loved my food and there was no way I was going to pretend to not eat just because of freaking Keith Michaels. I unwrapped the wrap and took a bite and when I looked up, Keith was already staring at me with a blank expression.
“What?” I asked through a mouthful before I swallowed.
“You eat like a pig,” he replied and went back to scrolling through his phone. I wonder what he was always doing on there. Maybe sexting his many conquests, I shook my head from that thought. I didn’t care what he decided to do with his time and who he sexted was no of my business.
“At least I’m eating and not starving myself all in the hopes of getting a guy to like me.” I wasn’t fat or skinny but just on the middle and I liked my body. It didn’t matter what anyone said because I loved my body the way it was and that was all that mattered, nothing else. “And besides, I made this food so I sure as hell am going to eat every single one of it.”
Jay looked at me and smiled, from what I had come to know, he was a pretty nice guy what with his hazel eyes that looked adorable when the light hit right. It was no wonder he was a ladies’ man. He was the only one who had been talking to me this entire time. “That does look good, can I taste?” he was looking at my lunch bag hopefully and I shrugged. I had made a lot because I thought I would be eating with my regular lunch buddies because I knew how much they loved my food.
I cut my wrap in half and gave the other half to Jay along with some cheese-balls and fruit salad. Jay took a bite and I swear he moaned because Keith snapped his head so fast in his direction.
“What? This… this is really good dude, you have to try some,” he stuffed the entire thing in his mouth and moved to the cheese-balls.
Keith looked over at him and then at me before he went back to scrolling through his phone. “I don’t eat handouts from someone who tried to break into my house.”
Jay spat the cheese-ball that was he had been eating and started coughing while I narrowed my eyes at Keith. I patted Jay on the back and handed him a water bottle.
“Gee, could you be a little louder? I’m sure the entire school hasn’t heard you.
“Didn’t you break into my house last night?”
If looks could kill, then Keith would have been dead by now. There was no way I was going to let him keep tormenting me like this. It wasn’t my fault and I had apologised for it so many times, the least he could do was have a soul and let me live it down.
Jay turned to me with eyes wide open that he looked like an owl’s baby. “Did you really break into his house? You can tell me and I, unlike some people,” he looked at Keith who wasn’t even paying us any attention and then turned back to me, “won’t tell anyone.” Jay batted his eyelashes and pouted which made him look so adorable I just had to tell him.
Sighing, I pulled my hair into a messy bun and took a deep breath. Maybe saying it out loud would make me feel less of a shitty person than I was currently feeling. “Yes, but I swear it wasn’t my intention. My best friend Kate practically forced me into doing it.”
Jay stared at me blankly and I knew he was trying to process everything I had just told him. “I don’t recall seeing anyone holding a gun to your head and making you do anything,” Keith said which made Jay and I to turn to him.
He was already looking at me with an arched eyebrow while his hands were crossed on his chest.
“You don’t know that,” I counted even though I knew as soon as those words left my mouth that he wasn’t going to believe them. Heck, even I didn’t believe them and I was the one saying them.
“Uh-huh and you want me to believe that crap when you don’t so much as believe it yourself?” Keith asked and he smiled smugly when my mouth kept opening and closing but no words were coming out.
Crap, that son of b***h got me but he wasn’t going to get me next time. I was going to be prepared.
“Cat got your tongue princess?”
“Shut up and stop calling me princess. My name is Macy.”
“Whatever you say princess,” Keith replied with an innocent smile. “Whatever you say.”
I picked up my bag and lunch bag. I wasn’t going to sit here while he kept making me feel bad for what I had done. Throwing my bag over my shoulder, I turned to say goodbye to Jay but he was already looking at me. Something in his look made me feel uncomfortable because I couldn’t tell what it was but I knew there was something and he wasn’t going to say anything in front of his freaking best friend. Crap, just my luck and here I had started thinking that Jay was better than his annoying arrogant of a best friend. But I guess the saying is true, birds of the same feather flock together.
I turned on my heel and started walking away when Keith called out to me.
“Oh princess, don’t be late. I’m picking you up tomorrow and it’s non-negotiable,” he said happily and I flipped him the bird without even turning back which caused him to laugh. “That’s the spirit but like I told you, you aren’t my type love.”
I shook my head and walked away, if I turned back around then I was going to do something I would forever regret. Like stabbing him in the eye with my plastic fork.
